Elizabeth City State University prioritizes safety after fatal on-campus shooting
ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WAVY) — Elizabeth City State University announced new updates on campus safety following the on-campus shooting that killed one person and injured five in April.
One killed, at least 5 injured, during ECSU Viking Fest event
The April 27 shooting led to the death of Isaiah Caldwell, who was not a student at the university. The five who were injured, three of which were students, have since been treated and released from the hospital. The night of the shooting, students were outside on the quad for the university's Viking Fest.
ECSU student recalls deadly shooting on campus
ECSU Police and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation are looking into all leads. The Elizabeth City Police Department, Pasquotank County and Camden County Sheriff's Offices are assisting to find the person or people responsible.
The university said it is prioritizing safety and the campus community's well-being. Since the shooting, they have followed up on multiple leads, completed security sweeps and went over surveillance cameras.
As a result of the shooting, students at ECSU completed the rest of their semester online. Final exams are also expected to be delivered remotely.
