Seton Hall basketball standout Isaiah Coleman to enter transfer portal
The first big test of Seton Hall basketball's offseason promise to rebuild with more resources did not go well. Isaiah Coleman, the Pirates' lone impact player during a 7-25 campaign, is reportedly headed for the transfer portal. Advertisement The 6-foot-5 sophomore wing averaged 15.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists this past season. He shot 39 percent from the floor, 29 percent from 3-point range and 76 percent from the free-throw line. After a slow start due to an injury-plagued summer and fall, Coleman hit stride during the first half of the Big East schedule, playing at an all-league level despite a dearth of talent around him. But being at the top of the scouting report with little help took its toll, and Big East coaches caught up with him during the back half of the conference slate as his efficiency plummeted. Advertisement His move to the portal doesn't come as a surprise. He hired an agent during the season, and after the Pirates' exited the first-round of the Big East Tournament, he was noncommittal about his future plans. "Obviously, I want him back," Hall coach Shaheen Holloway said at the time. "We'll do what we can to try to keep him.' Jan 8, 2025; Newark, New Jersey, USA; Seton Hall Pirates guard Isaiah Coleman (21) reacts after makes a three point basket during the second half against the DePaul Blue Demons at Prudential Center. Mandatory Credit: Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images After much was made about Seton Hall's paltry roster-building war chest last offseason – at about $1.5 million, it was roughly half of what their Big East peers had to work with – indicators from the school have pointed toward a much bigger commitment this offseason, aided by the impending ability of schools to share revenue directly with athletes and not just rely on fan donations. Advertisement 'I got the word that people are stepping up and they think it's gonna be there," Holloway said after the Big East Tournament, speaking generally about a resources bump. "But I want to make sure it's there and more, to tell you the truth. We need more.' Coleman entering the portal is the first stress test of that commitment, although there is almost no transparency into how these decisions are made. If he follows in the footsteps of Kadary Richmond and lands at a fellow Big East program, that will be an extra kick to the gut. Even if he leaves the conference, it'll be the third straight year the Pirates' best player has entered the portal: Tyrese Samuel (who landed at Florida in 2023), Richmond (to St. John's) and now Coleman. From an optics standpoint, that's a hard way to change the narrative about the program's lack of resources. Seton Hall at St. John's odds, picks and predictions
The Seton Hall Pirates (7-21, 2-15 Big East) and the No. 7 St. John's Red Storm (25-4, 16-2) meet Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. ET (CBS). Let's analyze BetMGM Sportsbook's college basketball odds around the Seton Hall vs. St. John's odds, and make our expert college basketball picks and predictions. The Pirates lost for a third consecutive game last time out on Thursday against Villanova, but they covered as 8-point underdogs in the 59-54 setback. Seton Hall is an impressive 3-1 against the spread (ATS) in the past 4 games, as it definitely hasn't waved the white flag despite being well under .500. The Red Storm pounded the Pirates 79-51 in Newark in the first meeting Jan. 18 as 9.5-point favorites as the Under (139) cashed. G RJ Luis Jr. went wild with 24 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals while dropping in 4 triples in that victory. Seton Hall G Isaiah Coleman was the only Pirates player who scored double digits, ending up with 11 points in the first meeting despite a 1-for-13 shooting night. St. John's has won 4 in a row since a 73-71 upset loss at Villanova Feb. 12, and the Johnnies have covered each of the past 3 outings. The Under is 2-1 in the past 3 games and 8-4 in the past 12 contests. – Rankings: USA TODAY Sports Men's Basketball Coaches Poll Stream select live college basketball games and full replays: Get ESPN+ Seton Hall at St. John's odds Provided by BetMGM Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. There is never a reason to bet huge favorites, but this number is especially ridiculous. And, just for fun, if you have a spare million dollars laying around, you can turn that into $10,000 of profit. Can you imagine? PASS. ST. JOHN'S -21.5 (-102) is the lean, but go with a half-unit play at most. While the Pirates have covered the past 2 games, and gone 3-1 ATS in the past 4 outings, they are 0-2 ATS this season as underdogs of 14 or more points. The Red Storm won the first meeting by 28 points on the road, and the Johnnies have covered 3 in a row. Be careful, though, as St. John's is just 1-3 ATS in the past 4 games as a double-digit favorite. OVER 134.5 (-110) might be the best play on the board in this Big East mismatch. Be careful not to get too carried away, though. While the Over has a slight 3-2 edge in the past 5 games for St. John's, the Under is 8-4 in the past 12 outings. For Seton Hall, the Over is 3-1 in the past 4 outings. Play our free daily Pick'em Challenge and win! Play now! For more sports betting picks and tips, check out and BetFTW. Follow Kevin J.
