An elderly couple from BTM Layout was subjected to a harrowing two-and-a-half-month ordeal by fraudsters impersonating law enforcement officials, who virtually 'arrested' them and extorted Rs.4.79 crore. The victim, a retired engineer who had returned to Bengaluru after working in Nigeria for 31 years, was targeted by scammers posing as bank representatives and investigating victim, Manjunath, who now resides in BTM Layout with his wife, was contacted in March by fraudsters who claimed that his credit card limit was overdue. BENGALURU: Two men who extorted Rs 4.79 crore from an elderly couple under the guise of a 'digital arrest' have been arrested by the South East Division CEN police. The accused have been identified as Ishwar Singh and Narayan Singh Chaudhary. The victims, a couple residing in JP Nagar, believed they were under digital arrest for nearly three months, from March 19 to May 15. The complainant, Manjunath (77), had worked as an engineer in Nigeria for 31 years. Both his children live separately after their marriages. The accused contacted the victims posing as bank officials, claiming that their credit card bills were overdue and that their bank accounts were linked to money laundering cases. They also sent a fake arrest warrant, stating that cases had been filed against them by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The victims even received video calls from the accused, who posed as officers from the agencies. During this period, the victims transferred Rs 10 lakh to Ishwar's account and another Rs 1.8 crore to Narayan's account. Police tracked the duo using their bank details. 'The elderly couple were rescued based on a tip-off, even though they were residing in the South Division. The accused were arrested after a lookout notice was issued against them following information that they were at a casino in Sri Lanka. The victims had not informed their children about the digital arrest. The case is still under investigation, and more details have to be collected from the accused,' said Sarah Fathima, DCP (South East). The accused had reportedly spent the extorted money at a casino in Sri Lanka. The complaint was filed in May. Police said the duo had also obtained copies of the victims' property documents.

Two mules in digital arrest case caught, police recover ₹10 lakh of ₹4.7 crore

Following the digital arrest case of a 75-year-old retired engineer, the South-East cyber crime police arrested two men, including an industrialist from Hyderabad, who allegedly received the money in their bank accounts. The police also exposed the link of a casino in Sri Lanka to the cyber fraud which is being probed in detail. The accused according to the police trapped the victim, posing as CBI and ED officials, and threatened to book him for money laundering three months ago, and forced him to pay ₹4.7 crore over a period of time. The accused even forced him to share property documents which they tried to use as collateral to get personal loans. The police, based on a tip-off from their Chennai counterparts, approached the victim, who was not aware of the scam and was transferring the money to different accounts. He had recently transferred ₹10 lakh to the account belonging to the driver of Ishwar Singh, a Hyderabad-based businessman. Based on the information, a police team tracked down Ishwar Singh who confessed that he had gone to Sri Lanka to gamble in the casino with ₹25 lakh. After losing ₹15 lakh, he returned to Hyderabad and asked for a refund for the rest of the money from the accused in the casino. The accused asked the victim posing as CBI officials to transfer the money to Ishwar. 'He was unaware that the money he received is part of a cyber crime,' a police officer said, adding that the money has been seized and returned to the victim. Meanwhile, the police also detained Ramnarayana Choudhary, an industrialist from Hyderabad, whose account the accused had used to transfer the money. The police found that Choudhary received ₹1.8 crore in his account which was later transferred to different accounts in Guntur and Vishakhapatnam. The police said that both Choudhary and Singh were unaware that the money they had received in their accounts belonged to cyber crime. The police have warned people not to share their bank accounts with anyone, while a probe is on to track down the accused and expose the links of cyber frauds and casino in Sri Lanka, said Sarah Fathima, DCP (South-East division).

3 held after argument over urination sparks fatal stabbing in Madhapur

Hyderabad: What began as a verbal spat over one of the accused reportedly urinating near a group of youngsters drinking in an isolated area behind a corporate hospital in Madhapur escalated into a fatal stabbing in the early hours of May 31. Madhapur police on Monday arrested three suspects, including two juveniles, for the murder of 18-year-old Jayant Goud. According to police, the incident occurred around 1.30 am, when Jayant was celebrating his mother's birthday with seven friends in a deserted area behind the hospital. An argument broke out between Jayant and a 17-year-old fabrication worker from Yellammabanda, after the latter attempted to relieve himself where the youngsters were having a get-together. The verbal altercation intensified, and the juvenile allegedly stabbed Jayant twice in the chest and hip, using a knife. After the attack, the juvenile fled the scene with two associates on a scooter. Jayant was rushed to the emergency department of Yashoda Hospital, where he was declared dead at 1.57 am, Madhapur inspector D Krishna Mohan confirmed. Based on a complaint from the victim's family, police registered a case under sections 103(1) (murder), 238 (destruction of evidence), and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with section 25(1)(A) of the Indian Arms Act. Apart from arresting two 17-year-old juveniles from Yellammabanda and Sanathnagar, police also picked up their associate Ishwar Singh, 18, from Erragadda. During interrogation, police learned that one of the juveniles had gone to urinate in the isolated area and got into a heated exchange with Jayant and his friends. The accused were presented in court. Ishwar Singh was remanded in judicial custody at the district jail in Kandi, Sangareddy, while the juveniles were sent to a juvenile home in Saidabad. Police said that Jayant had a criminal background. He was previously accused in a 2024 murder case registered at Bachupally police station while he was still a minor. The case is currently under trial.
