Two Islamic State fighters were killed in the raid that took place on Sunday, US Africa Command said in a statement on its website. No civilians were harmed in the attack, which was carried out in coordination with Somalia's government, it said.
Somalia's semi-autonomous region of Puntland, located in the northeast of the country, signaled in December that it was planning a new offensive to combat a growing insurgency by Islamic State. The Islamist-militant group, designated as a terrorist entity by the US, more than doubled in size last year, with as many as 1,200 combatants holed up in the Bari mountains east of Puntland's commercial capital, Bosaso.
'Degrading ISIS and other terrorist organizations' ability to plot and conduct attacks that threaten the US homeland, our partners, and civilians remains central to US Africa Command's mission,' it said.
In an attack carried out on Feb. 1, Africa Command said at least 14 Islamic State operatives were killed, including Ahmed Maeleninine, a key financier of the group.
