Iran sees further nuclear talks with US as futile

TEHRAN: The Iranian government sees no purpose in continuing the nuclear negotiations with the United States (US) following Israel's large-scale attack on its installations, according to the Foreign Ministry, as reported by German news agency (dpa). One cannot claim to want to negotiate and at the same time allow Israel to violate Iran's territorial integrity, ministry spokesman Ismail Baghai said of the US position, according to the Tasnim news agency. Washington and Tehran have been negotiating over Iran's controversial nuclear programme for around two months but the talks have recently failed to gain momentum. A new round had been scheduled for Sunday in Oman. Even after Friday's attack, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who is conducting the talks for Tehran, has so far neither confirmed nor cancelled the consultations. Meanwhile, the IRNA state news agency quoted Baghai as saying: "It is still unclear what decision we will make on Sunday."

Iran sees further nuclear talks with US as futile

The Iranian government sees no purpose in continuing the nuclear negotiations with the United States following Israel's large-scale attack on its installations, according to the Foreign Ministry. Israel targeted Iran's nuclear sites, military leaders and top scientists in a massive campaign early on Friday. In response, Tehran has launched waves of ballistic missiles and drone attacks. Both sides have reported casualties, and despite growing international pressure for de-escalation, neither appears willing to step back from the conflict. Baghai said it has always been the desire of "the Zionist regime" - in reference to Israel - to create trouble for the West. "And it seems that this time it was again successful in influencing the diplomatic process," he added. Regarding the next meeting announced by mediating state Oman, the IRNA state news agency quoted Baghai as saying: "It is still unclear what decision we will make on Sunday."
