Winning $15 million lottery scratcher sold in California
A lucky lottery player in Southern California has claimed the first-ever top prize of a scratcher lottery ticket that celebrates the game's 40th anniversary, California Lottery officials said Wednesday. The ticket, worth approximately $15 million, was sold in February to Israel Martin Rodriguez at the 7-Eleven on the corner of Oxnard Street and Woodman Avenue in Van Nuys, according to a news release from the California Lottery. While Rodriguez won the grand prize, the 7-Eleven store that sold the winning ticket also received a $75,000 bonus. According to the California Lottery, not long after Rodriguez celebrated his win, another top prize for the same scratcher game was sold. The lottery said it will be releasing the name of the winner and the location that sold that ticket soon. The game originally featured five grand prize scratchers, the California Lottery said, meaning there are three remaining grand prizes remaining in the game. The game also has prizes of $100,000, $40,000 and $10,000, with lower prize amounts also available. The California Lottery released its 40th anniversary-themed scratcher game, called "40 Years of Play!," on January 20. The lottery says the game was created to "honor 2025 as the 40th year since voters created the California Lottery" and boasts prizes from $40 to $15 million. Overall odds of winning are less than 1 in 3. Lottery news: A man bought lottery tickets 'on a whim.' He ran down the street when he won $5.46 million. Winning $15 million lottery scratcher sold in Los Angeles
A California Lottery player has become the first top-prize winner of the state's 40th anniversary-themed Scratchers game, taking home a staggering $15 million. Israel Martin Rodriguez scored the jackpot with a 40 Years of Play! Scratchers ticket purchased at a 7-Eleven on the corner of Oxnard Street and Woodman Avenue in Van Nuys. The winning scratcher, which was purchased in February, also netted the store a $75,000 bonus for selling the ticket. California Lottery official Nancy Weimer presented a celebratory poster to 7-Eleven franchisee Karam Singh and store employee Massi Singh earlier this year. The special edition scratcher game was launched on Jan. 20 to commemorate four decades since voters created the California Lottery in 1985. The $40 ticket features prizes ranging from $40 to $15 million, with overall odds of winning better than 1 in 3, California Lottery officials said. Only five top prizes are available, and just two have been claimed so far. The winner and selling location of the other jackpot winner have yet to be announced. The California Lottery said that information will be released 'soon.' Players interested in playing the 40th anniversary-themed game but who don't want to spend $40 can opt for a $2 version, which offers a top prize of $40,000. Other recent winners during the Lottery's anniversary year include Margarito Gonzales Cortes, who won $1 million with a Triple Red 777 ticket in San Jose; Enrique Baldoni, who claimed $5 million with a Cash King ticket in Seal Beach; and Fidencio Duran Macias, who picked up a $7.5 million prize from a Crossword Extreme ticket in Huntington Beach. Lottery player hits $15 million jackpot in California. Where was ticket sold?
A scratchers ticket celebrating the creation of the California Lottery 40 years ago made a lucky player $15 million richer, officials reported. Israel Martin Rodriguez collected a grand prize in the '40 Years of Play!' scratchers game, the lottery said in a Wednesday, May 21, news release. He bought the winning $40 ticket in February at a 7-Eleven store in Van Nuys, officials said. Rodriguez came forward in February but it takes six to eight weeks to process claims, lottery officials said. The store received a $75,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket, officials said. A second grand prize-winning ticket also has been sold since the game debuted in January. The name of the winner and location where it was sold will be released once the lottery finishes processing the claim. Three more $15 million grand prizes remain to be claimed in the game. Van Nuys is about a 20-mile drive northwest from downtown Los Angeles.
