From Florence to Fez: World Sacred Music Festival Welcomes Italy as Guest of Honor

Rabat – The upcoming 28th edition of the Fez World Sacred Music Festival may be in Morocco, but it will carry a strong Italian accent. The decision to honor Italy as the guest country came as a natural step for this year's edition, which themed 'Renaissances' or 'Rinascimento.' It is a nod to the country's historical role as the cradle of the Renaissance, and a gesture that brings together two cities, Fez and Florence, with a long-standing connection dating back to 1961. This year, the two countries signed their first cultural twinning agreement under King Hassan II. From the old medina of Fez to the cobblestone streets of Florence, the two cities have always viewed culture as a central force behind their identity. This year's program celebrates joint heritage with a series of artistic exchanges, the most ambitious and exciting being a new collaboration between Fez's festival and the Monteverdi Festival of Cremona, one of Italy's most prestigious baroque music events. The cherry on top of this cultural dialogue will unfurl on the evening of Saturday, May 17, at the historic Bab Makina where Claudio Monteverdi's Vespro della Beata Vergine (The Vespers of the Blessed Virgin) will reverberate through the open-air stage. This masterpiece, composed in 1610, holds an exceptional place in the history of Western music. Bringing this music to life is a symbolic pairing: Antonio Greco, conductor of the Monteverdi Festival Choir and Orchestra, will work together with Mohammed Briouel, leader of the Fez Arabo-Andalusian Orchestra. For Abderrafie Zouitene, President of the Esprit de Fes Foundation, the rekindling between Florence and Fez represents much more than a tribute to the past. 'Fez, founded in the 8th century and home to the world's oldest university, has long stood as a crossroads of knowledge in Africa and the Mediterranean,' he said in a press statement. 'Likewise, Florence helped transmit the ideas of antiquity and gave birth to a renewed vision of humanity through the Renaissance. This festival revives that same spirit of curiosity and cultural dialogue.' The event is also the proud result of steady diplomatic effort. The Italian Embassy in Morocco and the Italian Cultural Institute of Rabat have played an instrumental role in building bridges between the two countries. 'Italy and Morocco share a deep love of art, seen as one of the highest forms of the sacred,' said Italy's Ambassador to Morocco, Armando Barocco. Carmela Callea, director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Rabat, described the upcoming concert as 'an invitation to travel, from Cremona, Monteverdi's birthplace and the heart of Italian musical tradition, to Fez, a city where civilizations have long met and mingled.' The festival will also welcome a younger generation of musicians. On Wednesday, May 21, in the gardens of Jnan Sbil, the ensemble Zenaida will offer another window into Renaissance music. Composed of international students from the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland, the group manipulates French-Flemish traditions through a new polyphonic lens inspired by Gregorian chant. Their appearance comes through a partnership with the Swiss Embassy in Morocco, further noting the festival's role as a platform for cultural diplomacy.

Rabat Commemorates 10th Anniversary of Morocco-Italy Cooperation in Heritage Preservation

The archaeological site of Chellah in Rabat hosted an official celebration marking the 10th anniversary of Moroccan-Italian cooperation in preserving and promoting the Morocco's heritage (2015-2025). The event highlighted the outcomes of projects completed under this successful bilateral cooperation, with senior officials from both Morocco and Italy in attendance. This cooperation, part of the Debt-for-Development Swap Agreement, was signed by the governments of the two countries in 2013. It includes archaeological sites such as Chellah, Volubilis in Meknes, and Lixus in Larache, with a budget of €3 million. In a speech, Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, stated that Morocco and Italy share exceptional ties, emphasizing that the two countries, centers of artistic innovation and creativity, have chosen culture as the cornerstone of their history for centuries. He further emphasized that under the leadership of His Majesty the King, Morocco has made the preservation and promotion of heritage a central priority in its public policies. For his part, the Italian Ambassador to Morocco, Armando Barocco, said that the two countries share a rich history in the Mediterranean basin, highlighting the deep-rooted cultural relations between them. The diplomat noted that the Moroccan community in Italy, which is the largest community in the peninsula outside of those from Europe, is an example of integration and success, and a source of pride for both Italy and Morocco. This celebration, organized in partnership with the Italian Embassy and the Italian Cultural Institute, featured an opera recital consisting of arias by Rossini, Mozart, and Verdi, to the applause of the audience. Italy and Lebanon: Partnering for sustainable and inclusive post-conflict recovery

NNA - The Embassy of Italy in Lebanon is pleased to announce a series of upcoming initiatives that reaffirm Italy's commitment to support Lebanon on its path toward post-conflict recovery, through the sharing of expertise in sustainable reconstruction, urban regeneration, and inclusive development. These events reflect a coordinated effort by the Italian System in Lebanon — including the Embassy, the Italian Cultural Institute, AICS (Italian Agency for Development Cooperation), and ITA/ICE (Italian Trade Agency) — in synergy with Lebanese institutions, academia, civil society, and the private sector. The aim is to foster innovative and context-sensitive strategies for rebuilding and reimagining urban spaces. Kicking off the program is the Roundtable on Urban Regeneration, to be held on April 14 at the Italian Embassy. Italian and Lebanese experts will discuss participatory approaches to urban renewal, with a focus on the rehabilitation of the historic Mar Mikhael train station, a flagship initiative supported by the Italian Cooperation. At the same time, the Embassy is supporting the participation of Dr. Martina Bovo in City Debates 2025 (14 -16 April), the renowned academic conference organized by the American University of Beirut (AUB), as part of ongoing efforts to foster academic exchange and critical reflection on urban planning. On April 16, in collaboration with the Lebanese American University (LAU) and the Italian Cultural Institute, the Embassy will host the international symposium 'Post-War Reconstruction: Tools for After.' The event will explore sustainable materials, circular practices, and design strategies through the contributions of prominent Italian architects and researchers. Among the speakers, special mention goes to Valentina Sumini, a globally recognized expert in architecture for extreme environments and sustainable innovation. The symposium will be followed by an exhibition open to the public. Already in the past months, under the same 'Tools for After' umbrella, the Italian Cultural Institute organized a film series focused on the global challenges of the Anthropocene. Italy will also be present at Project Lebanon 2025 (6–9 May) with a dedicated national stand organized by ITA/ICE, promoting Italian companies offering sustainable solutions in infrastructure and construction, and encouraging new partnerships with Lebanese stakeholders. In the coming months, thanks to the support of ITA/ICE, the restoration of the 'Ardea Purpurea' fountain in Verdun will also be completed, as part of a broader urban revitalization project in the area. Looking ahead, the Embassy and the Institute of Culture plan to bring to Lebanon the exhibition 'La Città in Scena – The City as a Stage,' dedicated to Italian best practices in urban regeneration. Additional initiatives include delegation visits from Italian recycling and circular economy networks, and thematic events to deepen technical and scientific exchange. These initiatives reflect Italy's enduring solidarity with Lebanon and its proactive role in sharing knowledge and tools for a better, greener, and more inclusive future. By bridging technical know-how with cultural exchange, Italy stands alongside Lebanon in reimagining its cities and communities. =========
