Boxing-Italian Olympic champion Benvenuti dies aged 87

ROME (Reuters) - Italian boxer Giovanni 'Nino' Benvenuti, who won Olympic gold in Rome in 1960, died on Tuesday at the age of 87, the Italian Olympic Committee (IOC) said in a statement. Turning professional after the Olympics, Benvenuti was also a world champion in two different weight divisions in the 1960s. Born in the Istria region in what is part of modern-day Slovenia, Benvenuti won Olympic Welterweight gold for Italy with victory over Yuri Radonyak of the Soviet Union in the final. He was awarded the Val Barker trophy as the outstanding boxer at the 1960 Games -- an event where American Cassius Clay, later known as Muhammad Ali, won the light heavyweight gold. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni paid tribute to Benvenuti as an athlete and for speaking up for thousands of Italians killed by Yugoslav partisans or exiled at the end of World War Two. "Thanks Nino for your fights in the ring and for those in defence of the truth. Italy will not forget you," she wrote on social media. Benvenuti won the world Super Welterweight title in 1965 when he knocked out compatriot Sandro Mazzinghi. Having lost that crown, he moved up to the Middleweight division and beat American Emile Griffith at Madison Square Garden in 1967 to claim another world title. Griffith won a rematch later that year but Benvenuti reclaimed the title in 1968 in their third meeting. The Italian lost the title in 1970 when Argentine Carlos Monzon defeated him in Rome. After his retirement, he appeared in a couple of films and remained a familiar face with regular television appearances. (Reporting by Keith Weir, editing by Alvise Armellini and Ed Osmond)

Napoli President De Laurentiis Says ‘We Haven't Discussed' Prospect Of Serie A Title Playoff Vs Inter Milan Yet'

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis says that his team 'haven't discussed' the prospect of scheduling a Serie A title playoff against Inter Milan yet. Speaking outside the Italian Olympic Committee headquarters, as reported by FCInterNews, De Laurentiis addressed the matter of a potential one-off match for the Serie A title. Advertisement A couple of seasons ago, the league changed the rules for the Serie A title. In the event that two or more teams finish level on points at the top of the league table, the tie-breaker would not be the head-to-head record of the teams, or goal difference. Rather, in that scenario it would go down to a one-off match between the two teams. Essentially a playoff for the Scudetto. And with just a single point separating Napoli and Inter Milan at the top as things stand with two matches to go, there is certainly a real possibility of that happening. Napoli President De Laurentiis: 'Haven't Discussed' Serie A Title Playoff Vs Inter Italian film producer and President of the Napoli. Aurelio. De Laurentiis is interviewed prior the. Advertisement Otherwise, it will go down to the final day of the season. Therefore, the question of when to pencil in a potential playoff between Inter and Napoli has created a real logistical headache. Inter will want it out of the way sooner rather than later, undoubtedly. The Nerazzurri have the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain on the 31st to think about. They hardly want the distraction of a one-off match against Napoli just day before that match. Reports indicate that the league could bump forward Inter and Napoli's final matches. They could face Como and Cagliari respectively next Thursday. Advertisement That would leave open the possibility of a playoff on Sunday, the 25th, almost a week before the Champions League final. However, Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis said that 'We have not discussed it yet. We haven't decided anything.'

Pope Francis death causes postponement of all Serie A games Monday

Italian soccer league Serie A postponed all games Monday following the death of Pope Francis. The league released a statement confirming the postponements. It did not announce when Monday's games will be rescheduled. The Vatican released a video Monday announcing the death of Pope Francis. He was 88. In the video, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, who will serve as the head of the Vatican until a new pope is appointed, confirmed Pope Francis died Monday morning. 'At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father,' Farrell said. 'His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church.″ Serie A was scheduled to play four games Monday. Juventus and Lazio were among the teams set to play before Monday's postponements. Inter Milan, which currently leads Serie A, was not scheduled to play Monday. The team did, however, pay its respects to Pope Francis on X following his death. In a statement, the team called Pope Francis a "man of faith, humility and dialogue who was able to speak to everyone's heart." In addition to postponing Monday's games, the Italian Olympic Committee announced all sports events played this week will include a moment of silence for Pope Francis. The Vatican is located within Rome, though Vatican City is considered an independent state in Italy. Pope Francis, who was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, was an avid soccer fan. He supported San Lorenzo, one of the oldest clubs in the Argentine Football Association. Pope Francis hosted the team at the Vatican twice during his papacy. He also met Argentinian soccer star Diego Maradona twice. During a 2014 meeting, Maradona presented Pope Francis with a No. 10 Francisco jersey. Maradona wore the No. 10 throughout his playing career.

Serie A may be suspended for Pope's funeral

Saturday's Serie A fixtures may be suspended along with other sports events in Italy because of the funeral for Pope Francis in Rome. Giovanni Malago, president of the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) has asked for this measure to be taken after the government declared five days of national mourning. Malago also asked for a minute of silence to be observed before all sports events during the week. The three Serie A matches scheduled for Saturday have reportedly already been postponed: Inter Milan v Roma, Lazio v Parma and Como v Genoa. The league is yet to confirm the postponement. The Women's Six Nations rugby union match between Italy and wales in Parma on Saturday will also be affected. Dignitaries and visitors from around the world are expected to be in Rome for the funeral of the pope who died on Monday morning following a stroke and heart failure, according to the Vatican. They are to include United States president Donald Trump, in what will be his first trip abroad since starting his second term in January. Monday's four Serie A Games were postponed and have been rearranged for Wednesday. In Argentina the late Pope is being honoured at his local hometown soccer club in Buenos Aires, San Lorenzo de Almagro, where the football-loving head of the Roman Catholic Church remained a member during his 12-year papacy. Fans from the first-tier Primera División club started gathering from Monday at the club's chapel to the south-west of the Argentine capital to bid farewell to their best-known member. Special commemorative jerseys will be worn for Saturday's match against Rosario Central, club president Marcelo Moretti said. with Reuters
