Professor Suman Chakraborty appointed Director of IIT Kharagpur
Professor Suman Chakraborty, institute chair professor in the Mechanical Engineering department, was appointed Director of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur on Thursday (June 19, 2025). His appointment will end after a period of five years from the date of assumption of charge of the post. On December 31 last year, Professor Amit Patra, Director of IIT, Benaras Hindu University, had taken additional charge as the interim Director of IIT Kharagpur until the regular incumbent took over. Professor Chakraborty is a former student of Jadavpur University in Kolkata as well as of the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru. Currently a J.C. Bose National Fellow, he is also a visiting lecturer at Stanford University in the United States. His illustrious career as a scientist is centred around developing several 'affordable, simple-to-execute, and innovative diagnostic solutions' related to common clinical challenges like anaemia, cancer, COVID-19, tuberculosis etc. 'I sincerely appreciate the steadfast support of our IIT family and well-wishers. I eagerly anticipate our shared journey toward cultural transformation, innovation, and excellence as we work together to position our institute among the world's leading academic institutions,' Professor Chakraborty told The Hindu. Earlier this year, he was awarded the 2026 TWAS Award in Engineering and Computer Sciences by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). In his long career, Professor Chakraborty has been involved in the development of clinical diagnostic technologies like Covirap, a rapid COVID-19 detection test kit that was granted a U.S. patent for its rapid nucleic acid testing technology using DNA-RNA samples. He has also developed technologies that are currently available in the market commercially, like PrepapQR, a home test to accurately test vaginal Ph, and HemoQR, a simplified anaemia screening test.

Suspect in Robert Fico assassination attempt may face terror charges, Slovak police say
Slovak police have concluded their investigation into last year's attempted assassination of Prime Minister Robert Fico and recommended that the suspect face charges of a "terror attack". Prosecutor-General Maroš Žilinka stated that prosecutors would now review the evidence to determine whether the accused, identified only as J.C., will stand trial. However, a timeline for the legal proceedings remains unclear. J.C. was immediately taken into custody following the attack on 15 May last year, and has remained in detention ever since under a court order. Initially charged with attempted murder, he now faces upgraded charges. Žilinka cited new evidence obtained by investigators, but did not disclose further details. Government officials previously suggested the attack may have been politically motivated and committed by a perpetrator acting alone, but also hinted at the potential involvement of a third party. Fico suffered multiple gunshot wounds after being shot in the abdomen while greeting supporters in the town of Handlová. He has since recovered. A highly polarising figure in Slovakia's politics, Fico's pro-Russian policies and crackdown on independent media have triggered mass protests across the country since his return to power in October 2023.

What's Next for MrBeast? Class Consciousness.
In the eighth episode of the reality competition show 'Beast Games,' released last week, the YouTube superstar MrBeast — the show's host, co-executive producer and mischief-maker-in-chief — asked the 10 remaining contestants to choose their share of a $1 million split. By this stage of 'Beast Games,' which streams on Amazon Prime Video, there was a surprising amount of good will and trust among the players, who are all competing to be the lone winner of a $5 million prize in next week's finale, the largest amount ever given away on television. The money was presented in a preposterous stack of bills, an almost cartoonlike array. The first contestant took one-tenth. The second took a little more. The third contestant to stake a claim was J.C., a man with a sob-story background who had previously appeared to be beyond ethical reproach. But the combination of quite reasonable greed and quite tragic desperation led him to take $650,000 for himself, leaving barely anything for the remaining players, to their collective repugnance. The subsequent shots of J.C., alone in his bunk, weeping and surrounded by duffel bags of cash, was the first truly affecting note of this season. He was a villain, but a completely reasonable one. Resources are scarce, competition is everywhere — all you can do is grab what's in front of you. Typically, the YouTube videos for which MrBeast, born Jimmy Donaldson, is known steer clear of such psychic weight. He is 26, and has been the dominant star on YouTube for several years now, with 357 million subscribers. His stunt videos, in which people are prompted to do extreme tasks for money, are often viewed hundreds of millions of times. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.
