The Minnesota Vikings opened their first set of organized team activities on Tuesday, and there was a lot to take in. On Wednesday, we got to see that everyone from the team had arrived and it meant we got to see a little bit of everything. It speaks to how motivated this Vikings team is after yet another early playoff exit, despite going 14-3 and being one of the best teams in the NFC last year. Advertisement The biggest name that fans and media will see at OTAs includes the long-awaited return of J.J. McCarthy. Following a torn meniscus in the first preseason game of 2024, we had not seen the former Michigan Wolverine since then when he showed everyone what was in store for Vikings fans. Now, there is renewed hope with his return, so getting to see him for the first time in nine months is something special. The 2025 IIHF World Championship picked back up again on Monday as Switzerland handed Team USA its first loss of the tournament with a 3–0 shutout win. Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman J.J. Moser skated on Switzerland's second defensive pairing. USA was previously undefeated, so the win moves Switzerland to the top of Group B. The Swiss have seven points through three games, positioning them as early leaders at the tournament. But which games will be played in primetime after the Vikings surprised the NFL world by going 14-3 in 2024? Who are the other primetime candidates for the Vikings? Their success last year should get them several scheduled games next week. If J.J. McCarthy performs like the Vikings hope and they repeat last year's success, they could be in line for more late-season flexes. Here are five potential primetime matchups for the Vikings in 2025. Detroit Lions The final regular-season game of the 2024 season was a battle for the NFC North championship and the NFC's No. 1 seed. Sam Darnold melted down at the worst possible time, and the Vikings lost 31-9. But a postgame handshake between the head coaches was highlighted with Dan Campbell telling Kevin O'Connell, "I'll see you in two weeks." The rematch didn't happen, with the Vikings getting bounced one week later. That's the sort of storyline perfect for primetime and a good measuring stick of NFC North superiority. Green Bay Packers The Vikings dominated the Packers for most of their two games in 2024 but only won by four combined points. Those two games may have foreshadowed letdowns against the Lions and Rams. But the Vikings playing their biggest rival is always good for TV, even if Aaron Rodgers isn't in purple. Chicago Bears If the Vikings are fortunate, this game will be played at U.S. Bank Stadium again. The Bears are (once again) expected to compete in the NFC North, finally. But even if the Bears underachieve, Soldier Field has been a house of horrors for the Vikings since the turn of the century. The Vikings almost choked away a two-score lead in the final minute of last year's matchup. Seattle Seahawks Did the Vikings make the right call moving on from Sam Darnold to J.J. McCarthy? This game may put many of those questions to rest, if the verdict hadn't already been decided. The Vikings beat the Seahawks in Seattle last year, thanks to late-game heroics from Darnold. Previously, this has been another house of horrors for the Vikings, who seemingly used to play primetime games in Seattle every year. Los Angeles Chargers Can the Chargers take the next step under Jim Harbaugh in Year 2? And can McCarthy, who helped lead the Harbaugh-led Michigan Wolverines to a National Championship following the 2023 college football season, be the Vikings' franchise quarterback? Harbaugh and McCarthy have praised one another since they left for the NFL, but they're both ultra-competitive by nature. This one will mean a ton to both of them as they try to solidify their statuses with their new teams.
