Maal Hijrah: Azmar Talib Honoured For Championing Islamic Economy In Melaka
MELAKA, June 27 (Bernama) -- A strong passion for economics and real estate, along with years of trusted service, has earned Datuk Azmar Talib the Melaka Tokoh Maal Hijrah 2025 award. The 65-year-old from Masjid Tanah received the Abu Bakar As-Siddiq Award in recognition of his contributions to Islamic economic development and efforts to modernise waqf and zakat management in the state. Azmar said he still has several ideas to help improve the economy of Muslims in Melaka, especially the asnaf group. 'Waqf (endowment made by Muslims for charitable or religious purposes) properties must be developed and managed efficiently to benefit the community and this is what I'm working on with JAIM and Tabung Haji,' he said after receiving the award during the state Maal Hijrah celebration at Masjid Al-Hakeem, Kampung Tehel here last night. The ceremony, officiated by Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam, was attended by state leaders and over 3,000 people. Azmar, who once served as CEO of TRX City Sdn Bhd, hopes more Muslims will go into business, following the Sunnah of the Prophet in building a strong economy. He said his current roles in the Melaka Islamic Religious Council (MAIM) and the State Economic Action Council (MTENM) allow him to help strengthen both the state's economy and Islamic affairs. 'We are still economically behind and often rely on aid because many of us work for others. I believe zakat and waqf assets should be better utilised through investments, and the returns can help Muslims start businesses,' he said. Azmar was one of 12 recipients of the Maal Hijrah 1447H/2025M awards.

7,000 Manufacturers Aim to Raise Wages for Foreign Workers with Specified Skilled Worker Status through New Association
Thirty major industry associations in manufacturing sectors such as steel, electronics and textiles established a cross-industry human resources management organization to secure more highly skilled foreign workers to work in Japan. About 7,000 companies will join the Japan Association for Human Resources in Industrial Product Manufacturing (JAIM), which will require each member company to provide a 1.5%-3% year-on-year pay raise for those who work under the specified skilled workers status. The Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry on Wednesday recognized JAIM as a registered entity to support acceptance of the highly skilled, long-term workers. JAIM includes 30 major manufacturing-related organizations such as the Japan Iron and Steel Federation, the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association and the Japan Textile Federation. A similar organization has already been established in the construction industry, but JAIM, the second such organization, covers a wider range of industries. The specified skilled workers system was launched in 2019, with 280,000 foreign nationals working under the system as of fiscal 2024. Of these, 45,000 are in the manufacturing industry, and the number is expected to quadruple from the current figure to up to 170,000 in fiscal 2028. Many of the JAIM member firms face severe labor shortages and aim to retain workers by raising wages. Specifically, a minimum year-on-year salary growth rate per foreign worker will be set at 3% for large companies and 1.5% for small and midsized companies. JAIM will verify the employers' performance annually through documents, and companies that fail to meet the standards will be required to raise wages the following year. If firms do not adhere to the guidelines, they will be expelled from the association and will no longer be able to hire the specified skilled workers. The government plans to abolish by fiscal 2027 the technical intern training program, which caused such problems as long working hours and unpaid wages. Instead, the Employment for Skill Development Program will be established to create a favorable working environment for foreign workers and encourage their transition of residential status to specified skilled workers.

Melaka records continuous increase in enrollment of SRA students
MELAKA: Melaka continues to record an increase in student enrollment in the Religious Primary Schools (SRA) under the Melaka Islamic Religious Department (JAIM) every year, said Deputy Exco for Education, Higher Learning and Religious Affairs, Datuk Rosli Abdullah. He stated that as of April, a total of 50,024 students have registered for JAIM's SRA compared to 48,976 students last year, and this increase clearly reflects the high interest and concern of parents regarding religious education. 'The state government welcomes this development and considers it as evidence of the community's trust in the role of religious schools in shaping the identity of Muslim children in this state. 'Religious education is seen as increasingly important in facing the complex and challenging global challenges that arise every day, and the role of education today has gone beyond its traditional functions,' he said while speaking at the JAIM Religious Schools Academic Excellence Ceremony for the Year 2024 here today. Rosli added that the role of educational institutions now also includes the aspects of character building and the well-being of students, and not just focusing solely on academic fields. 'Students do not only attend school to learn but are also equipped with various aspects of character and psychology so that they become knowledgeable individuals with noble morals in line with the aspiration to produce a MADANI generation,' he said. In addition, he stated that the event organized by the JAIM Education Division was held to celebrate and recognize 167 students from 45 schools who achieved excellent performance, particularly in academics throughout the year 2024. 'This event involves the presentation of awards for three main types of examinations at the primary and secondary levels, namely the Al-Quran and Fardu Ain Class Assessment Examination (UPKK), the Arab Language Elementary Certificate (SIA), and the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM).' The award given proves that the state government always cares about the development of Islamic education for children in this state, in addition to being one of the efforts to support the mainstream education system for the balance between the worldly and the hereafter,' he said.

2AM Knock On Hotel Door – JAIM's Bust Goes Bust
Subscribe to our FREE A married couple received a rude awakening in the early hours of the morning when their hotel room was raided by religious authorities. In a video circulating on TikTok yesterday (1 May), user @haahlahzett and her husband answered the door in the middle of the night after a series of loud knocks. The couple can be seen rushing to get decent after they realised it was the Malacca Islamic Affairs Department (JAIM) at their door. After they opened the door, the Islamic department officers could be heard asking the couple for their MyKADs and most likely their marriage cards to verify that they are indeed legally married. 'I was ironing my clothes at 2am and suddenly there was knocking at the door. After six years our marriage card has a function. P/S this did not happen at an OYO hotel, it could happen at any budget hotel,' the caption wrote. 2 pagi tgah gosok baju tiba2 kena ketuk alaaaaaahai! Lepas 6 tahun nikah kad baru function 🤣🤣🤣 P/s : Bukan oyo/hotel bajet pun kena User @haahlahzett made a second video recounting her experience that night, expressing how nervous she was during the whole incident and how chaotic it went as she and her husband scrambled to put proper clothes on when eight officers were at their door. She mentioned asking the hotel receptionist the next morning about the sudden raid on their room, and they claimed that they had no prior knowledge of the spot check. 'They came into the hotel randomly and asked for a list of guests who are Malay. This is not exactly a shoddy budget hotel,' she said. Netizens debate about the ethics of such a raid Looking to the comments section, many TikTok users discussed whether a raid like this is ethical or not, arguing that it is a violation of privacy. Some also admitted to not owning a marriage card despite being already married due to the religious department's poor service in providing them with the document. A few also questioned JAIM's use of resources, wondering why they were raiding a random hotel at two in the morning instead of focusing on more pressing matters. One user asked what they should do if they found themselves in a similar situation and did not have their marriage card or certificate on them. Most suggested to either keep a photo of it in their phones or a photocopy in their wallets. Aside from personal privacy, it's also a matter of security. In a scenario where criminals might be posing as authority figures, a hotel must conduct proper checks before allowing any visitor into the guest areas or rooms. What would happen if you're an unmarried Muslim caught co-habitating with the opposite sex? Cohabitation out of wedlock is generally considered khalwat, which refers to close proximity between an unmarried man and woman in a private setting, and it is an offense under the Syariah Criminal Offences Enactments of each state. The penalties may include a fine of up to RM3,000 or imprisonment up to two years, or both, depending on the state and specific circumstances. Syariah law enforcement is handled by the state religious authorities, and enforcement varies across Malaysia's states. Share your thoughts with us via TRP's .
