JFK Presidential Library closes amid Trump federal worker culling
The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum closed on Tuesday and will remain closed until further notice, a notice from its foundation read. The JFK Presidential Library and Museum is administered by the National Archives and Records Administration, and the closure of the Boston institution comes amid the Trump administration's sweeping push to reduce the size of the government and cut the federal workforce. The official statement did not cite a reason for the library's closure. In a statement provided to a Boston-based news station, however, a foundation spokesperson reportedly cited an 'executive order.' 'Due to [the] executive order, the JFK Library is closed until further notice,' the spokesperson told WCVB's NewsCenter 5. The local news outlet reported that a similar statement citing 'the executive order' was posted to the glass doors of the building in Boston. 'Due to an Executive Order concerning a 'reduction in force (RIF),' the JFK Library and Museum will be closed to the public until further notice,' a sign posted on the building's door read, according to CBS. In a video posted to X just two weeks after dramatically quitting social media, Jack Schlossberg issued a dire warning for the American public. 'Hey, it's Jack,' he said in a video posted to his 153K followers. 'I'm OK, but our country is not. It's under attack from its own government.' Schlossberg's clip was directed at Elon Musk and captioned, 'Hey DOGE eat s--- buddy.' Neil Armstrong first walked on the lunar surface in 1969, largely thanks to President Kennedy's early Space Race policies. Without the Presidential library, said Schlossberg, the past could be forgotten. 'JFK sent a man to the moon,' he said. 'But you'd never know it if the JFK Library wasn't open.' The library's closure came as a result of the Trump administration's widespread efforts to decrease the size of the federal workforce, America's largest employer. Local news station WCVB-TV reported that an emotional staff meeting was held prior to the closure—one that left several employees crying. As many as nine people were laid off from the organization, according to the station. 'Donald Trump and Elon Musk's thoughtless crusade has caused an iconic institution and economic driver to close in Massachusetts,' the state's governor, Maura Healey, said in a statement. Schlossberg's comeback followed a relatively short period of internet silence. On Feb. 12, the Kennedy heir vowed to delete social media forever. The 32-year-old Vogue correspondent is no stranger to voicing public criticisms, and left X after attacking his cousin RFK Jr., Elon Musk, and others. His posts—many of which were combative and filled with expletives—left some concerned for his mental health and others contemplating defamation suits.
