Steelers Snag Hyper-Athletic FCS All-American Tight End

From Steelers Now: JJ Galbreath, South Dakota Athletics The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed South Dakota tight end JJ Galbreath as an undrafted free agent, the team announced on Saturday. Galbreath is a 6-foot-3 3/8, 231-pound tight end that put up fantastic athletic testing scores in the pre-draft process, with a 4.67-second 40-yard dash, a 4.20-second shuttle, 6.82-second three-cone, 38-inch vertical and 10-foot-3 broad jump for an 8.4 out of 10 Relative Athletic Score. Advertisement A three-year starter for the Coyotes, Galbreath recorded 1,355 yards on 93 catches and had 12 touchdowns over his four-year college career. The native of Arvada, Colorado joined South Dakota in 2020, redshirted during the canceled COVID-19 season, and then began his career in 2021 as a reserve tight end. He became a starter in 2022, became and honorable mention All-Missouri Valley pick in 2023 and was a first-team All-MVFC and an All-American as a senior in 2024. JJ Galbreath, South Dakota Athletics His most productive collegiate games came as a senior in the FCS playoffs in 2024, when he had six catches each, for 45 yards against UC Davis and 68 yards against Montana State. Advertisement The Steelers have added a number of players from the MVFC in recent years. They drafted quarterback Chris Oladokun (2022) and guard Mason McCormick (2024) from South Dakota State, and had North Dakota State tight end Noah Gindorff (2023), outside linebacker Derrek Tuszka (2021) and guard Joe Haeg (2021) on their team. The Steelers will add Galbreath to a relatively thin spot on their roster. Pat Freiermuth, Darnell Washington and Connor Heyward are set to return at tight end from 2024, with Donald Parham the lone addition so far, replacing MyCole Pruitt. The Steelers have now signed a total of seven undrafted free agents following the close of the 2025 NFL Draft on Sunday: Galbreath, Memphis wide receiver Roc Taylor, Minnesota-Duluth guard Aiden Williams, Indiana wide receiver Ke'Shawn Williams, Iowa safety Sebastian Castro, Pitt kicker Ben Sauls and South Alabama fullback/tight end DJ Thomas-Jones. Steelers Rookie Tight End Leaning on His Athleticism

PITTSBURGH — Though he came to the Pittsburgh Steelers from an unheralded place, joining the team as an undrafted free agent from South Dakota, rookie tight end JJ Galbreath entered the team's rookie minicamp with confidence in his athleticism and potential. 'I think my speed, athletic ability, like vertical, all that, explosion, um, will definitely be a big factor in, you know, going up and getting the ball if it's in the air, um, you know, those perimeter blocks against maybe some of those quicker feet type guys, um, so I feel like that's where I can also potentially, hopefully break away and showcase my talent as well,' Galbreath said. Advertisement The 6-foot-4 tight end from South Dakota was an FCS All-American and turned heads during his pro day with impressive testing numbers. He ran a 4.67-second 40-yard dash and recorded a 38-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-3 broad jump—showcasing the explosive athletic traits that he hopes will translate at the next level. One of Galbreath's biggest challenges early on will be his size. Weighing in at just around 230 pounds, he enters the league slightly undersized for a traditional tight end. Still, he's optimistic about the resources at his disposal in Pittsburgh. 'Once I get to the facility and with the program or organization, you know, truly be able to work with the strength staff and nutritionists and all that kind of stuff to put on that good weight,' Galbreath said. At South Dakota, Galbreath put together a solid 2024 season despite missing a few games due to injury. He totaled 32 receptions for 469 yards and three touchdowns. While his production wasn't eye-popping, he showed flashes of reliability as a security blanket—and his athletic ceiling suggests there could be more to unlock. Saints ran position drills for FCS All-American tight end at South Dakota pro day

Saints ran position drills for FCS All-American tight end at South Dakota pro day The New Orleans Saints have had the chance to get up close and personal with many of the 2025 NFL draft prospects, via private workouts, official 30 visits, and pro-day appearances. This will continue to occur throughout the remaining weeks leading up to the draft, as they attempt to solidify their draft board ahead of the big event. One of the players they recently had the chance to scout is South Dakota tight end JJ Galbreath, as was stated in a report by Tony Pauline of Sportskeeda, their staff actually took part in running the drills. From Pauline: "Graded as a PFA coming into the season, Galbreath measured 6-foot-3.5 inches and 238 pounds. He timed the 40 in the low-to-mid 4.6-second area and touched 38 inches in the vertical jump and 10-foot-3 in the broad jump. The New Orleans Saints ran his position drills." This information can be confirmed by the official times from the South Dakota pro day, which state he had 12 bench press reps, a 4.61-second 40-yard dash, a 38-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot-3 broad jump, and a 4.20-second 20-yard shuttle. This was a solid performance given his large frame and shows his athleticism is not something to be concerned about whatsoever. His 8.39 Relative Athletic Score should clear the Saints' in-house metrics. As for his statistical production, Galbreath was very solid in 2024, putting up 32 receptions for 469 yards (14.7 average) and 4 touchdowns, as opposed to 36 receptions for 579 yards (16.1 average) and 5 touchdowns in 2023. It is also worth noting he did miss multiple games in 2024 due to injury, only playing 10 including the two FCS Championship games. While not absolutely mind-boggling, his stats prove he can be a consistent and reliable receiving option on top of a serviceable blocker. He is someone to keep an eye on for the Saints, as his stock has improved in the last two years and he could have worked himself into a draft-day selection.
