'Delicious' American chain 'far better than McDonald's' opens next week
An American burger sensation is set to open in the UK from next week. Carl's Jr, a Californian fast-food giant, has Cardiff marked for its inaugural site, however, has said it has a vision to establish 100 restaurants across the UK within the next four years. It will launch on Thursday, April 3, with a second poised to open somewhere in southern England just in time for the summer season. The remaining 98 locations remain under wraps, but Liverpool could be a possibility. David Moffat, who is helming the UK expansion as country manager, told news publication JOE: "We're looking at a sturdy rollout with a target of 100 restaurants plus in four years." READ MORE: I visited the 'best place to live in the UK' just 20 miles from Liverpool, and now I'm packing my bags READ MORE: Dad with £900 in bank couldn't believe what happened when he answered his front door First founded in 1941, Carl's Jr. operates more than 1,000 locations in the United States and 28 other countries. The chain prides itself on being a 'hangover cure' and is most loved for its meat—and veggie-packed burgers, breakfast burritos, and sandwiches. Carl's JR did hint on Instagram that the menu for the UK sites would be revealed soon as it continues to work with YouTuber Alix Earle. While official plans for the chain's UK takeover remain under wraps, foodies took to social media to share their excitement. Tiff said: 'I am seriously thinking of making a trip just for this'. David added: 'We're totally ready for this'. Vale wrote: 'If you need any tasters before opening day, I will gladly sacrifice myself in the call of duty.' Jessie said: 'This is better than groceries. This is groceries.' A few fans even made the bold claim on X that it was better than McDonald's. Wolv wrote: 'Carl's Jr burger tastes better than McDonald's burger.' Mark said: 'Personally, I don't find McDonald's food better than functional. Carl's Jr, on the other hand, actually has tasty burgers.' Echoing a similar sentiment, Uni said: 'I ate Carl's Jr for the first time. It was really delicious. Far better than McDonald's, though a little expensive.' It comes as its counterpart on Lord Street recently reopened with a new refurb. The city centre McDonald's branch, which is owned and operated by local franchisee Tony Higdon, reopened after a 'convenience of the future' redesign, having been closed for renovations since January. The revamp includes a new restaurant layout with the latest technology to create a more seamless experience for customers. Some of the key changes include a front counter redesign, which will create specific areas for different sales channels, meaning more space for customers to enjoy their meals, less congestion around touchscreens, and shorter queues. There is also a dedicated courier entrance, allowing the crew to better accommodate courier needs, alongside reducing congestion in the dining area to create a more relaxing restaurant environment for customers. The kitchen's redesign includes a bigger order assembly area and dedicated areas to prepare dine-in orders, which will help the crew serve more quickly, efficiently, and accurately. The redesign of McDonald's kitchen and dining areas also improves digital sales channels and the McDonald's App and makes smarter use of internal space to enhance the dine-in experience. The restaurant will also now offer table service. You can see it in full here.

Pentagon prepares to expand in-theater data processing pilot
The U.S. Defense Department is laying the groundwork to expand a pilot program started in 2023 to provide more data processing capabilities to military units operating outside of the U.S., according to a senior official in the Pentagon's Chief Information Office. As combatant commands around the globe integrate more sensors and uncrewed systems, there's a growing need for computing and storage capabilities. The Joint Operational Edge, or JOE, cloud initiative aims to provide commanders with the computing capabilities they need to crunch the swaths of data those sensors are gathering and identify key intelligence insights. In just over a year, the department has established JOE nodes in Japan, Hawaii and Guam, as well as several sites in Europe and Africa. Rob Vietmeyer, chief software officer for the DOD CIO, said the program is still in its infancy, but the Pentagon hopes to quickly expand the most needed capabilities in the coming years. 'We're working with the intelligence community, Joint Staff and combatant commands to build out these capabilities with our commercial partners,' he said during a panel at the Potomac Officers Club's annual Research and Development Summit in McLean, Virginia. Vietmeyer told Defense News on the sidelines of the conference the department's current focus is on ensuring the capabilities it delivers through JOE are what combatant commands need and can use today. The vision is for JOE to be flexible and grow as needed based on demand. Over the next few years, the department plans to expand the number of nodes from the handful it operates today to around 20. 'We don't want to build out more infrastructure than what we can take advantage of,' he said. 'We're trying to keep this as an agile program and continue to build out based on where we're adding real value.' Part of JOE's initial work has been to get these capabilities into the hands of users in the field — often referenced as 'the edge' in military parlance — so they can get a feel for how it works and could potentially benefit operations, Vietmeyer said. Two areas where the program is seeing particular demand from users in the field are AI and graphics processing unit, or GPU, tools. A GPU is a circuit that processes images and other graphics. Along with building out the necessary infrastructure, the JOE team — which includes partners in the Defense Information Systems Agency and U.S. Special Operations Command — is developing policies and working with vendors to craft procurement strategies for the effort. While the project is currently funded as an enterprise effort, Vietmeyer said it will eventually transition, at least in part, to a fee-for-service approach. Supply chain security and risk management are key issues for the Defense Department as it builds out its edge computing architecture. Leigh Method, currently performing the duties of deputy assistant secretary of defense for sustainment, said DOD has several initiatives to mitigate risk to its supply chain. Speaking alongside Vietmeyer at the R&D Summit, she highlighted the creation of a Supply Chain Risk Mitigation Integration Center. Currently, the organization has just one employee, but the department intends for the center to grow over the next few years and look across the department to better understand and prioritize risk and develop strategies for reducing it. Method also pointed to an initiative called Vendor Threat Mitigation, which aims to give combatant commanders visibility and market analysis into the companies they work with to access data processing tools. She said the goal is to ensure DOD isn't inadvertently 'contracting with the enemy' and to give commanders the authorities they need to protect logistics capabilities.
