JPD Kids Academy offers students an early look at law careers
JOPLIN, Mo. — Some possible future members of law enforcement get an early look at what the job entails. Soon-to-be 6th-grade students are taking part in the annual JPD Kids Academy. The first one of 2025 began Monday. There are a total of four: one each week, where 20-25 kids each week get a firsthand look at some of the things officers deal with on a daily basis. JPD Kids Academy offers students an early look at law careers Learn about area pollinators while creating at this free area event Community of 'tiny homes' to be built in Joplin Spring check-ups a must for heating and air systems Joplin woman celebrates 100th birthday with family and friends They got to see a couple of the department's K-9s Tuesday and even went through the department's obstacle course and had handcuffing races – which were popular. But they're also learning about more regular tasks, like fingerprinting and paperwork. 'I think it's neat to show kids kind of what it's like in law enforcement, and then also show some parallels as long as the stuff they're learning in school like writing sentences, spelling, physical activity — other things like that — interpersonal skills. Showing that all of these things they're learning right now in school can apply to jobs later on in life. We get to have that positive relationship with these kids. Showing them that the police department is their friends, and showing them that we are here to help them out, and that police officers are good for them and the community,' said Ofc. Jason Barchak, JPD. About 100 students will go through the academy between now and the end of the month. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Stormy winter ahead: Suidooster's six explosive twists you can't miss
As the Cape winter rolls in with full force, it's not just the weather that's heating up - emotional tempests are brewing in Suidooster's fictional suburb of Ruiterbosch this June, and viewers can expect one explosive storyline after the next. Here are six dramatic arcs guaranteed to grip fans: 1. Matters of the heart Siya (Gantane Kusch) is still nursing a broken heart after Bianca (Simone Biscombe) made it clear her love lies with Riaan (Daniel Coetzee). Brunei to leverage digital technology in transportation
SUWON: Brunei is keen to leverage digital technology in the transport sector. The Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC), through the Land Transport Department (JPD), will soon be issuing a request for information (RFI) on the provision of a smart transport system. This project, under the 12th National Development Plan, aspires to revamp public transport in the Sultanate, said Minister of Transport and Infocommunications Datuk Seri Setia Shamhary Datuk Paduka Mustapha. The RFI is expected to work hand-in-hand with the recent JPD request for proposal (RFP) for the provision, operation, management and maintenance of public transport services in Brunei. The latter project is currently in the award evaluation stage. The minister was speaking at the signing and renewal of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the field of smart city development during the 2025 Suwon Asia-Pacific Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Forum in Suwon, South Korea. The MoU is a step towards advancing collaboration in digital transformation between the government of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and the government of South Korea. The signing underscores the strengthening bilateral ties between the Sultanate and South Korea, as well as the mutual aspiration to foster inclusive, technology-driven urban development across the region. The renewed MoU reaffirms both nations' commitment to strengthening cooperation in smart city development, particularly through the sharing of knowledge, technologies and expertise. It supports the implementation of impactful initiatives that will enhance the quality of life for citizens and foster sustainable economic growth. The collaboration is aligned with the strategic framework of the ASsean-Republic of Korea Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and reflects the national development priorities of both countries. Shamhary signed the MoU on behalf of His Majesty's government and the South Korean Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Park Sangwoo signed on behalf of the South Korean government. Accompanying Shamhary at the signing ceremony were Ambassador of Brunei to South Korea Nooriyah Yussof, Permanent Secretary at the MTIC Mohammad Nazri Mohammad Yusof as well as senior officers from the ministry and the Embassy of Brunei Darussalam in South Korea. The minister also attended the opening ceremony of the 2025 Suwon Asia-Pacific ITS Forum and participated in the high-level roundtable, which convened ministers, vice-ministers and senior official representatives from around 20 countries to share their national ITS developments and engage in strategic dialogue. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
