Washington Parish jail inmates plan to escape stopped by jail staff
WASHINGTON PARISH, La. (WGNO) — An attempt to break out of a Washington Parish jail was prevented by jail staff. In a post to social media, the Washington Parish Sheriff's Office reported inmate James B. Lorio attempted to escape through the air condition duct in his cell block on Monday, May 26. Jefferson Parish deputies searching for man wanted in connection with fatal Harvey shooting
HARVEY, La. (WGNO) — Deputies with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office are searching for a man who is wanted in connection with a fatal shooting in Harvey. On April 23, the JPSO reported that an unresponsive man with a gunshot wound was found outside a home in the 1100 block of St. Michael Drive. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Folsom man, mother arrested after discovery of alleged dog fight training operation On Tuesday, May 13, JPSO officials identified 19-year-old Justin Smith, Jr. as a suspect in the investigation. Smith is wanted on charges of first-degree murder and obstruction of justice. Deputy fires weapon during arrest: JPSO
TANGIPAHOA PARISH, La. (WGNO) — Officials with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office report that in the early morning hours of Saturday, May 10, a deputy fired his weapon while performing an arrest. According to the JPSO, around 2:40 a.m., a deputy performed a traffic stop on an occupied truck without a license plate in Metairie, which was located behind a business near the intersection of Yale and Hudson streets. One arrested, two killed in separate overnight New Orleans hit-and-runs During the stop, the suspect who was in the driver's seat of the vehicle, identified as 44-year-old Travis Umfrey, of Metairie, allegedly began yelling at the deputy and ignoring all commands. The deputy then reportedly fired his conducted energy weapon at the suspect after he had gotten back into the truck, however Umfrey managed to drive away with a woman still in the passenger seat. Officials say Umfrey then led deputies on a chase across multiple parishes all the way to Interstate 55 near Ponchatoula, where a local law enforcement officer managed to stop the truck using a spike strip. In attempting to arrest Umfrey, the suspect allegedly fought with officers and tried to grab one of their CEWs, prompting a deputy to fire a single round at Umfrey from their service weapon, missing him. Deputies say the struggle continued outside the truck with Umfrey reportedly trying to grab a knife he had clipped on his pants, however he was eventually put into handcuffs and taken into custody. One hospitalized in Seventh Ward shooting Umfrey has been booked into the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center on charges of improper lane usage, operating a motor vehicle while impaired, resisting an officer, simple kidnapping, aggravated flight from an officer, aggravated obstruction of a highway, attempted disarming of a peace officer and resisting a police officer with force or violence. More charges may be added. Dog shot after biting deputy during Marrero search warrant: JPSO
MARRERO, La. (WGNO) — Deputies with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office are investigating after a deputy reportedly shot a dog that attacked another deputy while conducting a search warrant in Marrero on Friday, May 2. The JPSO reported deputies responded to the 5100 block of Mt. Rushmore around 11:30 a.m. for a search warrant when a dog got out the front door and bit a deputy. Coast Guard searching for missing 75-year-old boater near Larose
LAROSE, La. (WGNO) — A search is underway for a 75-year-old man who reportedly fell off his boat near Larose on Friday, May 2, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. Coast Guard officials said that a 14-foot skiff with no one on it was found by a mariner and reported to watchstanders around 9:30 a.m. Dog shot after biting deputy during Marrero search warrant: JPSO A search was launched, and a boat and aircrew were dispatched to the area.
