Traders announce province-wide strike on April 26

Photo: NNI Listen to article Traders have announced a complete shutter-down strike on April 26 across the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) province in solidarity with the people of Palestine. The announcement was made by Senior Vice President of the Jamiat Business Forum, Mushtaq Ahmed Khalil, who stated that the strike will encompass the entire province, including the capital city, Peshawar. He confirmed that all major trader organisations have declared support for the move. A special meeting has been scheduled for April 24 in Peshawar to finalise preparations. According to Khalil, arrangements for a peaceful strike are already underway. He also highlighted that social media platforms are being actively used to promote the boycott of Israeli products alongside the planned protest. Coordination with various trade bodies is in progress, and market leaders have reportedly assured full cooperation in closing businesses for the day. Talks are also ongoing with transport sector representatives to expand participation. Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has announced a nationwide strike on April 26 to protest against Israel's ongoing military operations in Gaza and to express solidarity with Palestinians. The call was made by JI chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman during a large pro-Palestine rally held on Sunday along the Islamabad Expressway. Addressing thousands of participants, Rehman condemned what he described as genocide in Gaza, where more than 51,000 Palestinians have reportedly been killed since Israel launched its military response to Hamas's October 7 attack.

Nationalists, cops clash on Sharah e Faisal

Police had set up a barricade to stop a JSQM rally. The Sindhi nationalist party was marching against construction of six canals over the Indus River, which was likely to further reduce water share of the lower riparian province. As the protestors and police came face to face, SHO Saddar and the driver of the SSP South were injured in the ensuing scuffle. The protesters attacked the police with sticks and stones. The charged protesters also damaged three police mobile vehicles with sticks. Police were trying to prevent the rally from heading towards the Red Zone area near Shahrae Faisal FTC, on which they became angry and started scuffling with the police. During this, a severe traffic jam occurred on Shahrae Faisal near Baloch Colony, causing long queues of vehicles. The rally participants refused to take the alternative route suggested by the police, while the police insisted that they would not be allowed to enter the Red Zone. During this, barricades were set up near Gora Qabristan, and the rally was diverted through Baloch Colony, Sindhi Muslim Society, and Shahrah-e-Quaideen. During this, protesters clashed with SSP South Mehroz Ali, attacking him with sticks. Police personnel managed to rescue SSP South and move him to a safe location, but SHO Saddar and SSP South's gunman, Shafiq, sustained injuries. Speaking to The Express Tribune, SSP South Mehroz Ali clarified that he did not attempt to stop the rally but only informed the protesters that entering the Red Zone was against the law.
