It could have been so different...
With only a couple of Premier League games remaining before Ipswich Town drop back down to the Championship, I thought I'd scratch a 'whataboutery' itch for the season to for what limited good it will do, here's my top five 'Sliding Doors' moments for Ipswich's 2024-25 campaign - the situations which could have taken a far more positive path than what actually as goalkeeperWhile the criticism of goalkeeper Aro Muric has been overblown, it's clear that Alex Palmer is a calmer pair of hands. Starting the season with him in goal might have given our defensive unit more confidence from the points against FulhamThere was only one team that looked likely to score the winning goal in this game back in August, and sadly they had to settle for a point. Had Jack Clarke or Omari Hutchinson beaten the stoic Bernd Leno late on who knows what an early season victory would have done for at BrentfordThis incident-packed trip to west London ultimately led to a galling defeat, a season-ending injury and a suspension. If only the Blues had dug in at half-time and not gone on to lose in such a confidence-sapping to beat Leicester at homeA shocking VAR-induced minute of madness - where an ascendant Town were denied a stonewall penalty before seconds later Kalvin Phillips was harshly sent off - started an unwelcome trend of dropping points late on at home to relegation hits the post at FulhamOff the back of victory over Chelsea, Town headed to Fulham with confidence and managed the game expertly. That all changed in the 89th minute, when Jack Clarke fired in a fearsome shot to secure the points which instead agonisingly came back off the post. Within a minute, the Blues had conceded a penalty to the hosts and were denied back-to-back wins for the first more from Richard Woodward at the Blue Monday Podcast, external

Ipswich 'much better equipped' for another promotion
Ipswich winger Jack Clarke says the club are "much better equipped" to be promoted again should they be relegated back to the Championship this McKenna's side finished second and were promoted on 96 points in the 2023-24 campaign, but look resigned to an immediate return to the second tier, which could be confirmed this asked if the club are in a strong place to return, Clarke said: "Everybody does - you'd be stupid not to."They finished second last season and I think everybody at the club would argue they're very much better equipped now for if they were back in the Championship now to what they were last season."I think the trajectory of the club is always going to be on the up - it just depends if and when what exactly happens."Clarke joined Ipswich for an initial fee of £15 last summer but has struggled for form in the top flight, managing just nine starts without scoring."Nobody had really played at this level before and its a case of learning what works, seeing what doesn't work and that has just come with time," the 24-year-old added."It's hard to dwell on games when you've always got another big one coming up."For everybody, it's just been a learning curve and hopefully we can be better for it."Sometimes you do feel a little bit starstruck when you line up against the top teams in these prestigious stadiums, but I think that's something you have to take while it's in front of you."Weirdly, its probably been one of the most enjoyable seasons without winning many games in terms of the experience and the level we have competed again. It will be one we can all appreciate much longer down the line in our lives."
