Teens who drowned in Donegal had entered water to retrieve football
Two teenagers who died after getting into difficulty in the sea off the coast of Buncrana, Co Donegal had entered the water to retrieve a football, according to a local councillor. The alarm was raised yesterday afternoon after three teenagers got into difficulty while swimming near Ned's Point just outside the town. A 16-year-old boy was taken from the sea after a search operation, but subsequently died in hospital in the early hours of this morning. The body of an 18-year-old man was recovered from the water shortly before 10pm last night. A third teenage boy managed to swim ashore following the incident. Gardaí have said he "is in no danger and should make a full recovery". Sinn Féin's Jack Murray said the community in Buncrana is "absolutely devastated" following the deaths of the teens. He said they were International Protection applicants who had entered the water to retrieve a football. "I've just visited the IPAS centre and obviously they were loved because those people in that community are absolutely devastated. "There's no words that you can describe how hurt everybody is - their community, our community. We're as one as we grieve this horrible news," he said. "My understanding is they were playing football, the ball went into the water and they went in after the ball... just the innocence of kids playing football and this is the outcome. "There's no words to describe how awful it is," he said. "This town has not been immune from tragedies in the past has been visited with another horrendous tragedy but this community will stand together. "There's a prayer service arranged for 4pm and I know the town will fill that chapel... It's horrendous, but we'll get through this together," he said.

Officers involved in deadly shooting of knife-wielding man in Elk Grove Village cleared of wrongdoing
ELK GROVE VILLAGE, Ill. — A probe into the deadly police shooting of a man outside his home in Elk Grove Village in late 2023 has found no wrongdoing on the part of the officers. Following the deadly shooting of 24-year-old Jack Murray on Friday, Dec. 1, 2023, an investigation conducted by the Major Case Assistance Team (MCAT), the Cook County State's Attorney's Office and the Office of the Illinois State's Attorneys Appellate Prosecutor found that the actions of the officers involved 'were consistent with all applicable laws and regulations,' officials from the Village of Elk Grove announced Thursday. The confrontation with Murray unfolded around 4:30 p.m. on that day outside his home in the 200 block of Fern Drive in Elk Grove Village. Read more: Latest Chicago news and headlines Officials said Elk Grove police were called to the scene following a report of a man armed with a knife at a home in the area. The officers who responded to the scene parked down the road from the home so they could assess the situation, but officials said when they made it to the house, they encountered Murray as he was exiting the home with a knife and confronted him. According to officials, as Murray exited the home, he began advancing toward officers and ignored multiple commands to drop the weapon. Officials said when Murray eventually got near the officers, they deployed a Taser two separate times, but he continued to advance toward them with the knife. According to officials, the officers were then 'forced to protect themselves and utilize their firearms to stop Mr. Murray.' After the shooting, the officers began first aid and life-saving measures until paramedics arrived, but Murray did not survive the confrontation. 'The findings from MCAT, the Cook County State's Attorney's Office and the Office of the Illinois State's Attorneys Appellate Prosecutor confirm that officers responding to a very difficult and challenging situation acted in a way that was appropriate given the threat posed to their own safety,' Elk Grove Village Mayor Craig Johnson said Thursday. LATEST CASES: Missing people in Chicagoland Based on a previous statement from the Elk Grove Village Police Department, five officers responded to the scene, though not all of them applied lethal force during the encounter. Officials said all of the officers who responded that day had a combination of Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training, mental health training, and de-escalation training, which were all utilized during their response. 'Elk Grove Village places a high priority on ensuring that our Police Officers have the resources and training they need to respond to the variety of situations presented to them on a daily basis,' Johnson said. 'While this incident was a tragedy, we are grateful that our officers adhered to their training by taking steps to de-escalate the situation and attempting to use less-than-lethal force.' The deadly shooting sparked questions by Murray's family members who claimed that officers knew of Murray from previous encounters, adding that he had allegedly called village police in the past, seeking help when he felt his health and wellness were in danger. Murray's family members later retained the law services of Romanucci & Blandin. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
