'I date Lioness Alex Greenwood and played in Prem but had to retire at 29'
Lionesses star Alex Greenwood's footballer boyfriend Jack O'Connell saw his own career wrecked by injury, having once been in the thoughts of England manager Gareth Southgate The boyfriend of England women's star Alex Greenwood was on the verge of international honours himself before injury cruelly cut short his career. Greenwood is a Lionesses legend after being part of the squad that memorably won Euro 2022 and one of the players of the tournament at the 2023 World Cup as England reached the final, where they were beaten by Spain. The Merseyside-born defender has been in a relationship with Jack O'Connell since the pair met at sixth-form college. Both went on to become footballers, with O'Connell coming through the Blackburn Rovers academy and having a string of loan spells in the lower leagues. The centre-back joined Brentford permanently in 2015, but his stay in west London was brief. It was at Sheffield United where he truly made his name, helping the Blades soar from League One to the Premier League. His form was so impressive that then-England boss Gareth Southgate held discussions with Blades manager Chris Wilder after an impressive debut season in the top-flight. However, his career was ruined by injury and after several attempted comebacks, he made the heartbreaking decision to call time on his career at the age of just 29 in 2023. In an emotional message on social media, he wrote: 'This is a very difficult announcement for me to make, although Sheffield United fans will already know that for the past three seasons, I have been fighting to save my professional football career. 'Today, I am announcing my retirement from football. I have put my heart and soul into this recovery since my knee problems began in June 2020, but this is a battle I cannot win.' He also paid tribute to his partner Greenwood, adding: 'Walking away from football will leave a void in my life - but I have made my peace with it. And I am grateful for the matches I played, the moments I lived out on the pitch, and to my team-mates - many of whom will be friends for life. It was all a dream come true. "For now, some thanks. First, to partner Alex, who has given me support through my lowest moments. She is a supremely talented footballer and it has been a great consolation to be able to watch her career go from strength to strength. I am her biggest fan.' O'Connor, now 31, travelled to Australia to support his partner and the Lionesses at the World Cup. He told Sky Sports at the time: '[I'm] really proud of her. I've been there from the very start. I used to go and watch Alex when she was 16. It's unbelievable how far it's grown now. 'I'm her biggest critic as well. The standard that she sets herself, she has more to come. I get goosebumps when I think about it but I think she's one of the best centre-halves in the world and she still has gears to go through.' O'Connell, regarded as a modern Blades legend, didn't get a chance to say a proper goodbye as his final game was played behind closed doors during the pandemic. However, he recently made a one-game comeback in honour of another Blades favourite forced into retirement by injury when he took part in Chris Basham's testimonial in front of 17,000 fans at Bramall Lane. Ahead of the game, Basham paid tribute to O'Connell. He told the Sheffield Star: 'I think it will be nice for him to go back and get that feeling, and show gratitude from his point of view as well. 'It's hard at the time, because you're leaving the game and your emotions are also a little higher. Then, once things have settled down, you realise what you've done and what you've done for the club. It means much more now, seeing flashbacks and things like that.' O'Connell will be looking forward to cheering on Greenwood at Euro 2025 in Switzerland this summer. Before then, the Lionesses round off their Nations League group schedule with games against Portugal at home and Spain away on May 30 and June 3 respectively.

How Ryan Coogler's ‘Sinners' raises the bar for the horror genre
Above Michael B Jordan plays Smoke and Stack (Photo: Courtesy of Warner Bros) Set in 1932, Clarksdale, Mississippi, the film takes us to the tail end of the Prohibition Era. The set design, dialogue and diction of the characters immerse the audience in the world that director Coogler built. Despite being set over 30 years after the end of the Old West era, the film somehow watches like a Western—peculiar but welcome. Sinners takes its time with its worldbuilding. For a movie about vampires, it takes about 50 minutes for one to appear on screen, easing audiences in without feeling dragged. Above Jack O'Connell plays Remmick, an Irish Vampire in 'Sinners' (Photo: Courtesy of Warner Bros) When we're introduced to the first vampire, Remmick (played by Jack O'Connell), he's being hunted by a band of Choctaw vampire hunters. Their brief scene time commanded the screen and showed us that the threat is serious and real, which makes it disappointing that they were never seen again. It would've been great to see how the experts would deal with a vampire threat, but their lack of involvement in the plot is understandable to avoid the 'knight in shining armour' cliché. From the blues to country and even Irish melodies, each song was skillfully performed by the cast. Two scenes come to mind where the music was at its most powerful are Miles Caton's I Lied to You and O'Connell's Rocky Road to Dublin . The former is perhaps the film's most iconic scene, which is ironic as it didn't contain any vampires. Shot in one take, this scene gave audiences a look at Sammie's musical gift to summon their ancestors. African ancestors and modern DJs filled the room as the juke bar's customers jived to his song—blending ancient instruments with the familiar scratching of turntables to the blues. The latter is a mesmerising yet eerie foil to Caton's song. Rocky Road to Dublin was performed in an open field outside the sawmill by the vampires, who seemed like they were chanting demonically. O'Connell's performance was perfect, unsettling the audience without the need for jump scares and grotesque visuals. While present, the vampires preferred to charm their way in rather than with force—showing us true horror. Above The cast of 'Sinners' making their last stand in the juke bar (Photo: Courtesy of Warner Bros) The whole cast's performance was perfect, capturing their characters' little nuances. Playing dual roles as the twin brothers, Smoke and Stack, Jordan made them feel like two separate people—making it easy for the audience to tell who's who. Hailee Steinfeld and Wunmi Mosaku, who played the brothers' love interests, Mary and Annie, complemented their lovers—adding depth to their characters. Mary and Stack were exes who had difficulty being together due to the racial inequalities of the time, while Smoke and Annie had a foundation of love and support. 'I really found this whole experience of working with Michael quite magical. When it was Smoke and Annie, our relationship on the set, as Wunmi and Michael, was so easy and our shorthand was so in sync… His energy was so different that I could tell with my back turned who was walking onto the set—if it was Stack or Smoke. No question. I didn't even have to look. It was so obvious to me. It was so nuanced and fine-tuned. The vibration was so clear. I could tell without a shadow of a doubt if it was Stack or Smoke,' says Mosaku. Above The cast of Ryan Coogler's 'Sinners' (Photo: Courtesy of Warner Bros) Towards the end, when the dust has settled from the vampire attack of last night, the film circles back and shows us Sammie's fate. Once the credits roll, make sure to stay in your seat as there is an additional scene that provides closure and a happy ending for the remaining characters. Coogler's Sinners is by far the best film of 2025 so far and deserves all the praise it gets—hopefully setting new standards for the genre as a whole. ‘Sinners' Hits No. 1 On The Billboard Charts — On Top Of Ruling The Box Office
Sinners is a box office hit, and its soundtrack tops Billboard's Blues Albums chart while a song ... More from the film breaks into the World Digital Song Sales top three. MEXICO CITY, MEXICO - MARCH 31: Michael B. Jordan speaks with the media during the red carpet for the movie 'Sinners' at Plaza Universidad on March 31, 2025 in Mexico City, Mexico. (Photo by) For the past three weekends in a row, Sinners has been the top movie in America. It took over after A Minecraft Movie led for two frames, and it's showing very little sign of slowing down. In fact, it's the rare blockbuster that seems to be growing via word-of-mouth as more and more people head to theaters to see the Michael B. Jordan–starring vampire flick. Music plays a very important role in the plot of Sinners, and while it's not a musical, there are a number of amazing performances spread throughout the film. The project has now produced two albums, both of which have turned out to be commercially successful. This week, the soundtrack and the score that accompany Sinners reached the Billboard charts, and it's clear that everything connected to this title is going to be a big win. The Sinners soundtrack is the top winner between the two releases attached to the movie. It opens on a trio of Billboard rankings this frame, and it even manages to lead one of them. The soundtrack, which features the musical numbers from the film as well as some inspired-by cuts by modern-day hip-hop stars and other musicians, opens at No. 1 on the Blues Albums chart. It also kicks off inside the uppermost tier on the Soundtracks list, where it opens at No. 5. Impressively, the Sinners soundtrack also makes it to the Americana/Folk Albums roster, although it starts in a much lower position, at No. 18. Sinners doesn't feature a typical orchestral score, like many films, but rather one built around blues music, which is appropriate for the story. Because of that distinction, the Sinners score also arrives on the Blues Albums chart, launching at No. 5. That means Sinners appears at both Nos. 1 and 5 on the same list, which is quite the coup for a movie project. One tune featured in the movie also becomes a top 10 hit in America, joining both Sinners albums. "Rocky Road to Dublin," performed by actors Jack O'Connell, Brian Dunphy, and Darren Holden, is played during a particularly eerie moment in the action-packed film. It opens on the World Digital Song Sales chart at No. 3, and it stands out as the top debut this week on that list. Sinners has only been out for a few weeks and is already one of the biggest successes of the year. The movie has raked in more than $180 million and ranks as the fifth highest-grossing film of 2025. In just a few weeks, it may overtake Snow White, passing the $200 million mark.
