Burnden duo complete scenic Silverdale Circuit in good time
Two Burndeners were out enjoying stunning scenic trails last Saturday for 19 miles of the Silverdale Circuit.
Helen Bury and Jackie Oakes took on the challenging route, which takes runners through Dalham Deer Park with the treat of seeing fallow deer, past the impressive Leighton Hall and onwards to Leighton Moss Nature Reserve - the home of peregrine falcons. Following a single track along the coastline, the runners then ascend Arnside Knott before climbing the Fairy Steps.
The pair completed 20 miles of the circuit (including an extra wayward mile) in around 4hrs 45mins.
Windy is the name and it sounds like windy is the nature of the brutal fell race David Morrison took on last weekend.
Side winds and head winds plus thick fog, freezing temperatures, rain and deep boggy paths made it a tough one but it was 'just amazing' and 'a brilliant experience' in David's words.
This brave challenger completed 12 hard miles in 2:31:00.
A litter of fast-paced Road Runners were in Southport for the Mad Dog 10k – an annual race that's full of fun.
Featuring live bands, dress up and a movie theme inspired by our furry friends, it's a popular race, which raises money for charity. This year's theme paid homage to the recent Marvel smash hit Deadpool and Wolverine.
Emma Walker, Maggie Slamin, Kris Worsley and Craig Philpot completed the course, which changed its start and finish point to Victoria Park this year.
It can be challenging following the coastal route with a whippet-like wind along the scenic Marine Drive seafront.
All four Burndeners crossed the finish line with good results - Philpot and Worsley first in twin times of 53:43, Slamin next in 58:54 followed by Walker in 1:03:15.
Peel Parkrun was the prime location for Burnden Road Runners this weekend as the now annual challenge to become the most improved parkrunner commenced.
Following the success of last year's competition at Alexandra Parkrun, in Moss Side, Manchester, captains Gareth and Linda Doherty picked flat (ish) Peel for this year.
Burndeners run the parkrun twice - once in February and again in November to find the most improved time in the club. Alexandra's All-Stars were Andrew Parkinson and Sarah Brown but this time Matt Dewhurst was frontrunner in a speedy sub-18 time of 17:57 - giving him fifth overall position.
Next up was Suleman Badat, hitting the top 10 at ninth overall in 18:43. Lee White capped off the top three in 19:02.
First lady home was Francesca Caine, who was second overall lady in 20:47. Second Burnden lady was Gwen Kinloch (sixth lady), in 22:29, and Katherine Baines (seventh lady), in 22:48.
Suzi Walmsley peeled 10 seconds from her Beginners' graduate parkrun time, crossing in 52:17.
