14-year-old injured after fist fight turns into shooting in Miami-Dade: deputies

A 14-year-old boy was shot Saturday evening after a fist fight spiraled out of control near Miami International Airport, deputies say. Three days later, as the young boy recovers, a 17-year-old was caught and charged for the alleged shooting. Around 5 p.m. Saturday, Adrian Emmanuel Corrales, 17, and the 14-year-old planned a scuffle at a shopping plaza in the Fontainbleau neighborhood, 8000 block of Northwest Seventh Street, an arrest report details. The younger teen arrived in a car with three other males, whose ages were not revealed, while Corrales walked alone. Corrales' and the teen have a checkered history, the report describing it as '...[the pair] are known to each other as they have had personal issues in the past.' As the two approached each other, Corrales pulled out a gun and shot the unarmed 14-year-old two times — hitting him once in the chest and once in the left leg. Corrales ran off shortly after. The young teen was rushed to Jackson West Medical Center, before being transferred to Jackson Memorial's Ryder Trauma Center. He remains in critical but stable condition. Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office detectives tracked down Corrales in the ensuing days of the shooting by sifting through surveillance footage. On Tuesday morning, Detective Angel Alvarez arrested Corrales and took him to the Juvenile Assessment Center. It is unclear if Corrales remained at the center Tuesday night. He was charged with attempted second degree murder with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm by a minor.

Boys seriously burned in Memorial Day Fort Lauderdale boat explosion, grandmother says

The grandmother of two boys who survived a fiery boat explosion on the Intracoastal Waterway on Memorial Day said the children have extensive burns and may remain hospitalized for up to five months. CBS News Miami is learning new details about the victims of the explosion aboard a 39-foot Sea Ray boat that caught fire after Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue said fuel vapors somehow ignited. The source of the vapors has not yet been determined. Fifteen people were on board when the flash fire erupted. Eleven were hospitalized, including two children. Ten patients, including the boys, were taken to the burn unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Grandmother: "They are the world to me" Outside Jackson Memorial, Sylvia Rivera spoke with CBS News Miami about her 5-year-old and 7-year-old grandsons, who remain in serious condition. "Right now they are in serious condition and doctors are working on them. Their vitals are stable right now. They are doing well and they are reacting really well to the treatments and have not had complications so far," she said. Rivera said the 7-year-old has burns over 80% of his body, while the 5-year-old has burns over 40%. "I was very, very worried," she said. "I am also very unhappy. I just hope everything works out and investigators are able to do their job and come to a resolution. They will be here for a few months — three to four to five months, they estimate so far." "We are just glad we have a great support system and a lot of friends. Everyone is praying for these babies. They are the world to me. I would be nothing without these babies," she added. Family faces long recovery, financial strain Rivera said the family has turned to a fundraising website to help cover medical and other expenses, as has the family of 28-year-old Joshua Fifi, a father of four who was also burned in the explosion. "The mother and father are not able to work right now and they will not be able to work for a while. We are insured, but there are a number of medical expenses and other expenses," she said. Rivera said the tragedy has shifted her perspective. "This makes you appreciate a lot of things in life. It makes you not worry about the smaller things. Those things don't matter anymore. What matters is that they are well and are going to be OK." The boys' mother, Cassandra Rivera, posted a message on Facebook thanking people for their prayers. She said there is a "long road of recovery" ahead and she is facing multiple surgeries. "We will get through this and we will recover as fast as possible," she wrote.

11 injured, including 2 children, in Florida boat explosion

May 26 (UPI) -- A boat explosion on Memorial Day in Florida injured eleven people, including two children, according to Fort Lauderdale fire officials, who declared a "mass casualty incident." A total of 13 people were aboard the boat at the Lauderdale Yacht Club in Fort Lauderdale when it exploded or caught fire near the New River Triangle sandbar around 5:45 p.m. EDT, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue responded to the yacht club, located along the Intracoastal Waterway. The injured, including two children, were rushed to Broward General Hospital, with one burn victim flown by helicopter to Jackson Memorial-Ryder Trauma Center in Miami, according to first responders. While there was no information on the conditions of those injured, first responders and witnesses said several people were in the water and others appeared to have suffered burns. One witness, who lives nearby, told the Miami Herald he saw first responders treating a man. "He was moving around and talking, but it seemed like he had severe burns on his arms because they had it wrapped in gauze and everything," said Josh McCarty. Other witnesses described the boat as a 40-foot motorboat, as investigators look into what may have caused the explosion or fire. "There was this boat trying to leave the sandbar and when they went to start their boat up, it just exploded," said witness Bret Triano. "It was a huge fireball and people were kind of falling off the boat, so we were at the sandbar too, and we just tried to go help out." This is a developing story
