Kraken 2025 Draft Targets: Porter Martone
Porter Martone / Plenty of signs point towards the Seattle Kraken using the eighth overall selection on a defenseman, but if they are looking to draft the best available, and Porter Martone was there at eight, they could be all over it. Advertisement Listed at 6'3, 207 lbs, Martone is a physically imposing winger with the skill to match. Martone was considered a top-three pick for most of the season, but as the draft inches closer and the teams inside the top 10 are looking to solidify the center ice position, Martone has seen his name occasionally fall, although he's still expected to land inside the top five. Playing in the OHL with the Brampton Steelheads, the 18-year-old scored 37 goals and 98 points in 57 games, forming a formidable duo with Kraken prospect Carson Rehkopf. Martone also played on Canada's World Junior team, scoring one goal in three games and for Canada's World Championship team, failing to record a point in the two games he played. The Peterborough, ON native, is known as a power forward, willing to mix it up physically and be a disruptive forward. With the puck, Martone is a playmaker. "While Martone is known as a power forward, it's more accurate to describe him as a playmaker. The patterns of the game seem imprinted in his mind. Constantly scanning the ice and knowing his teammates' tendencies, system's rotations, and the expected movements of defenders, he stays connected with linemates, avoids coverage, and puts himself in advantageous spots to make the next play. He builds deft passing plays, moves ahead of the opposition, and preys on defenders' and goalies' expectations, manipulating them to open up great scoring possibilities," EliteProspects 2025 NHL Draft Guide. Advertisement Martone has been rumoured to add to the long list of CHL players to make the transition to the NCAA, although no formal agreement has been made. If the Kraken elected to draft Martone, he would be a perfect linemate for any of Shane Wright, Matty Beniers or Berkly Catton. His game should translate to the NHL quite easily and should be very successful in the playoffs. Stay updated with the most interesting Kraken stories, analysis, breaking news and more! New QB, no problem for Jaxon Smith-Njigba?
Yahoo Sports fantasy analyst Matt Harmon is joined by Football Guy's Alfredo Brown to discuss the Seahawks wide receiver's outlook this season with Geno Smith gone and Sam Darnold now taking over the starting quarterback job in Seattle. Hear the full conversation on the 'Yahoo Fantasy Forecast' podcast - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript If you just look at who Sam Darnold was last year from a production standpoint, was 7th in adjusted yards per attempt, he's 16th in EPA per dropback. Advertisement Not perfect, but definitely above the line, but that was in Minnesota's ecosystem. How much faith do we have that Arnold in in what's going on in Seattle right now, is going to be good enough to get Jackson Smith and Jig but to keep him out of the quarterback wilderness. I think once the genie is out of the bottle, you as an offensive coordinator and as a coach, you are doing your players a disservice if you don't take what worked for that player and make it work again for you. Like if you go out of your way to sign Sam Darnold, you have to have a plan in there. And I mean, Sam Darnold, he had, he was part of the 49ers and and that Shanahan style offense for just I mean, it was a little bit, he had a cup of coffee there, but uh he, he gets a lot of the same concepts. Advertisement And for Jackson Smith and Jigba, I really do think for as much as we hear that they're gonna be a groundpound run the ball team, I'm sure they will, that's fine, but no DK Metcalf, no Tyler Lockett, you get sort of the elder statesman Cooper Cup who hasn't really been the same, he doesn't really stay healthy. Jackson Smith and the jig but might actually be the straw that stirs the drink for the Seahawks and probably should be as their best offensive player. Uh, we finally saw the usage that mirrored what he did at Ohio State, where he was getting targeted a little bit deeper downfield. It was like, he stopped being this weird screen guy. Advertisement They were doing in his rookie season. And, uh, it's just, it was, it was so frustrating to see that the first year, but now he, I think we have a guy who is not only going to be a big play guy in this offense, but he's also probably just going to keep being the volume guy. So for him, Uh, it's, it's a little loaded to say that he might be, uh, wilderness proof here, but I think Jackson Smith and Jigba ends up just staying a really good fantasy football and a good NFL wide receiver as well. He's gonna get moved around a lot in pre-snap motion. They're gonna be using play action to open things up in the Kubia. Advertisement Offense, which is, honestly, that's gonna get some big plays out of JSN deep and that's what worked so well for Sam Darnold last year. So, yeah, I'm, he also didn't score a lot of touchdowns last year, by the way, only 6 touchdowns for JSN. So, if there's some variants, that number goes up, it can make up for maybe any lack of volume that we get, but I think we're still gonna get volume and we're gonna get explosive plays from him.

Canada cruises to 2nd straight U18 world men's hockey title for 1st time
Brady Martin scored twice, netminder Jack Ivankovic stopped 28 shots, and Canada whipped Sweden 7-0 in the under-18 world men's hockey championship gold-medal game on Saturday at Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas. Xavier Villeneuve, Jackson Smith, Ethan Czata, Braeden Cootes and Jack Nesbitt also scored for Canada, which led 2-0 after the first period and 5-0 heading into the third. Ben Kindel chipped in with a pair of assists. Fourteen players registered at least one point for the champions. The victory gave Canada consecutive gold medals at the under-18 championship for the first time. And Ivankovic, who played this season for the Brampton Steelheads of the Ontario Hockey League, went 144 minutes 53 seconds without allowing a goal in Texas. He finished with back-to-back shutouts. Sweden, which was coming off an emotional 4-3 semifinal win over the United States on Friday, didn't appear to have much left in the tank for the aggressive Canadians, who blanked Slovakia 4-0 in Friday's other semifinal. "What a great feeling," said Canadian head coach Cory Stillman. "[It's been a] long season for these guys and you always want to finish the season with a championship with your club team. If that doesn't pan out, you get to represent your country and that's pretty special. "We got better as the tournament went on. Tonight, was the best game we played, and we came out winners." Jackson Smith, who played for the Tri-City Americans of the Western Hockey League this past season, was thrilled to win the gold medal. "This was one of the closest teams I've ever been on," said Smith. "We came together quick, didn't have a ton of time to get to know each other but that didn't matter. It showed out there with how we played tonight, we are truly a team. This is an incredible feeling. "There is nothing better than winning gold for Canada, and to do it twice [2024 Hlinka-Gretzky] is extra special. Hopefully, this is just the start for me and these guys." Ivankovic and Martin were named to the tournament all-star team, an award voted on by the IIHF and tournament directorate. Ivankovic was also named best goaltender of the tournament. Ben Kevan OT hero for Americans Ben Kevan's goal at 5:37 of overtime lifted the United States to a 4-3 victory over Slovakia in Saturday's bronze-medal game. Jan Chovan of Slovakia scored with 6:47 left in the third period to force the extra session. Blake Fiddler, Jacob Kvasnicka and Cole McKinney also scored for the Americans, who led 1-0 after the first period but trailed 2-1 heading into the third. Michal Svrcek scored twice for the Slovakians, who were outshot 33-26.
