Dozens protest arrests of 3 council meeting attendees, city hall security under scrutiny
Protesters are standing in solidarity with the three people who were arrested during Tuesday night's city council meeting. Action News Jax was at the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office on Wednesday as dozens waited for the release of two out of the three that were arrested. Leah Grady was already released from jail when protesters gathered Wednesday and she spoke out. 'Put simply, it was a dumb thing to be arrested for,' said Grady. 'But what it did was expose the contradiction at the moment of constituents trying to have their voices heard and our elected officials not only ignoring them but having them ejected from a public meeting.' Police said she was one of three people refusing to leave council chambers when ordered. Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters defended the way his officers handled the situation. 'When the officer got up there, he actually made contact with the person he was going to remove,' said Sheriff Waters. 'I believe the young man stepped into his way and then brushed his hand off. And when you do that the police officer is not going to allow you to do anything extra.' >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< JSO arrested Cauley on charges of resisting with violence but after reviewing video of the incident a judge found no probable cause for that charge. However, police said they did find a knife on him, and he faces charges of carrying a concealed weapon. His lawyers said it was a pocketknife which under state law, would not be considered a weapon. It's something the Sheriff disagrees with. Mayor Donna Deegan said she will conduct a full security review of city hall to make sure people are safe. Neighbors, officials encourage gun security after toddler accidentally shoots himself, dies
Neighbors are reacting to news that a two-year-old boy died after accidentally shooting himself. 'I was shocked because this is a quiet neighborhood,' Angel White says. Jacksonville Sheriff's Officers say the shooting happened just after 7 p.m. the night of Easter Sunday. They found the toddler with a single gunshot wound, and he later died at the hospital. Researchers are studying how often children and teenagers are dying because of guns. The Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Solutions says firearms have been the leading cause of death among children and teens since 2021. Back in 2022, children ages one through four accounted for fewer than 50 unintentional shootings. Data from the Gun Violence Archive, though, says there have already been more than 400 unintentional shootings in 2025. As a community, we must do everything we can to prevent this from happening again,' said JSO. Now, White is weighing in on the things parents can do to be more proactive in keeping their children safe from the dangers of a gun. 'My recommendation as a licensed gun owner – when you have small children, you have to make sure that your weapons are secure so these things don't happen,' she says. JSO said in a press release that they took the parents in for an interview on the night of the shooting. Our team reached out to them on Monday to learn if the parents would face any charges. JSO responded, saying it is too early to speculate what the outcome will be. This is an active investigation. Action News Jax will bring you the latest developments in this case on air and online. Twitch streamer shows support for JSO officer injured in shooting
Internet personality Zack 'Asmongold' Hoyt is showing support for a Jacksonville Sheriff's officer after body cam footage appears to show the officer listening to the streamer moments before last month's officer-involved shooting. On March 12, Officer A.C. Gaulding attempted to conduct a traffic stop at the intersection of Trout River Boulevard and Ribault Avenue. Gaulding was shot in the foot during the shooting, while the suspect, 33-year-old Brandon White, was killed. Weeks later, JSO released body cam footage leading up to the shooting, which appeared to include Officer Gaulding listening to the popular streamer while driving and before exiting his vehicle. 'This is the average Asmongold viewer. Hero police officer who takes down an armed gunman,' joked Hoyt to his viewers. 'He might be watching now, I hope he's doing well.' When asked by a viewer if the streamer if he is pro-police, Hoyt says 'I am massively pro-police, I completely support the police. Absolutely.' 'I hope he gets better, and he's just a traditional, everyday Asmongold viewer,' says the popular streamer. Asmongold is a YouTuber and Twitch streamer with over 5 million subscribers across multiple channels, where he plays video games and provides social and political commentary. Officer Gaulding was discharged from the hospital less than a week after the shooting. In a post on social media, JSO says, 'Leaving the hospital with the support of his team, Jacksonville Sheriff's Officer A.C. Gaulding continues to recover from getting shot during a traffic stop last Wednesday morning. Fellow officers and friends cheered him on as he left UF Health post-surgery on Thursday, a day after a man wearing body armor armed with a rifle and handgun shot him in the foot. Officer Gaulding returned fire, killing the shooter. The case remains under investigation. We'd like to thank our wonderful community for the support for our officer during this difficult time, especially the medical professionals at UF Health and our brothers and sisters at Jacksonville Fire and Rescue. Please join us in wishing Officer Gaulding the absolute best as he heals.' WOKV reached out to JSO for a comment, and because this is an active investigation, they are unable to comment as of this posting.
