Here's how the Saskatchewan Roughriders legally rejigger their CFL roster
Article content As the Saskatchewan Roughriders juggle personnel for their next CFL game, they have numerous places to list players while assembling an active roster to play Saturday against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Article content Note that teams are punished financially (or lose draft picks) if they don't abide by the league's roster restrictions. Here are the lists at the Roughriders' disposal: Article content Article content Article content Active roster: CFL teams can dress 44 or 45 players for a game, following guidelines that require at least 21 Nationals and one Global player, plus a maximum of 19 Americans, three quarterbacks and a nationalized American (an import who has played at least three years for Saskatchewan or five years in the CFL). Article content Article content One-game injury list: For slightly injured players, although healthy players can also be stashed on the one-game list. Players receive full salaries and are technically free agents who can get wooed away by rival teams. The Roughriders hope offensive lineman Jacob Brammer can play in Hamilton after spending Thursday's 31-26, season-opening victory over the Ottawa Redblacks on Saskatchewan's one-game list. Article content Six-game injury list: Seriously injured players go on the six-game list and can't practise until missing four games. They receive full salaries but the money doesn't count against each team's $6.02 million salary cap. If the injury isn't too severe, teams can re-activate players early, but their salaries retroactively count against the cap. The Roughriders placed linebacker C.J. Avery on the six-game list after Thursday's opener. Article content Article content Disabled list: For players sidelined by non-football reasons; doesn't cost a roster spot nor against the cap. Article content Article content Suspended list: Although players missing team activities can be suspended, mostly it's used for stashing players expected to eventually rejoin the squad. Offensive lineman Erik Andersen, Saskatchewan's second pick in the 2025 draft, has been suspended while completing his college career. Players aren't paid while suspended. Article content Practice roster: CFL teams can carry 13 extra players on their practice roster; typical pay is $750 weekly for practising and attending team meetings. As free agents they can join any team willing to pay their full salaries. After losing all-star defensive back Rolan Milligan Jr. with a head injury, the Roughriders have activated rookie DB Antoine Brooks Jr. from their practice roster.
