Jacque Vaughn named assistant coach at alma mater Kansas

May 21 - Former Kansas standout guard and two-time NBA head coach Jacque Vaughn is returning to Lawrence as an assistant coach. The Jayhawks announced Wednesday that Vaughn, whose No. 11 hangs in the rafters at Allen Fieldhouse, will join head coach Bill Self's staff for the 2025-26 season. Vaughn played for Roy Williams from 1993-97. "We're very excited to welcome Jacque and (his wife) Laura into the fold," Self said in a statement. "I've known Jacque from a distance for several years now and have always admired how he has conducted himself professionally and how he has treated people. I think he will be an excellent addition to our program, while also serving as a great mentor, coach and representative of Kansas basketball." Vaughn averaged 9.6 points and 6.4 assists in 126 career games (125 starts) for the Jayhawks. He is third in Kansas history with 804 assists. He was named Academic All-American in 1996 and 1997. He was the 1996 Big 8 Player of the Year. Vaughn replaces Norm Roberts, who retired earlier this month. "I'm truly honored and overwhelmed with excitement to return to my alma mater and join Coach Self's staff as an assistant coach," Vaughn said. "I couldn't pass up the opportunity to bring those experiences back to the school that means so much to me. It's a blessing to once again be part of the Jayhawk tradition." Vaughn, 50, was selected No. 27 overall by the Utah Jazz in the 1997 NBA Draft. He averaged 4.5 points and 2.5 assists in 776 career games (123 starts) with five teams across 12 seasons. Vaughn began his coaching career as an assistant with San Antonio in 2010. He became head coach of the Orlando Magic in 2012, going 58-158 in 2 1/2 seasons. He led the Brooklyn Nets to a 71-68 mark in parts of three seasons (2020; 2022-24). --Field Level Media

Former Nets HC Jacque Vaughn to be assistant coach with Kansas

Former Nets HC Jacque Vaughn to be assistant coach with Kansas The Brooklyn Nets have had a underwhelming history when it comes to its head coaches and how much time they spend coaching for the team. Recently, Brooklyn had various people coaching the team like Kenny Atkinson and Steve Nash, but one of their more recent head coaches is continuing his coaching career in the college ranks at his alma mater. Former Nets head coach Jacque Vaughn will be an assistant coach for the Kansas Jayhawks for the 2025-26 college basketball season, according to HoopsHype's Michael Scotto. Scotto noted that the news came directly from Vaughn himself, interesting given that Vaughn has not worked in the NBA since the 2023-24 season when Brooklyn fired him during the All-Star Break. Vaughn first came to Brooklyn heading into the 2016-17 season as a member of Atkinson's staff and was part of a coaching staff that helped the Nets go from some of the worst teams in the league to one of the more fun teams to root for due to the underdog mentality. After Atkinson was fired during the 2019-20 campaign, Vaughn was named interim head coach before Nash was hired the following season. Nash was fired seven games into the 2022-23 season and Vaughn was once again named interim head coach before signing a multi-year contract extension due to how well the team was playing with Vaughn coaching Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. Brooklyn went on to trade away Durant and Irving prior to the trade deadline that season, giving Vaughn a new challenge of trying to lead the Nets to the playoffs with players like Mikal Bridges and Nic Claxton leading the way. After heading into the 2023-24 All-Star Break with a 21-33 record, Brooklyn general manager Sean Marks and the front office decided to move on from Vaughn, clearing the way for Kevin Ollie to take over as interim head coach and Jordi Fernandez to become the next head coach heading into the 2024-25 season. Despite Vaughn not being able to lead the Nets to deep runs in the playoffs, he is moving on by trying to make a difference at his alma mater by helping the team go as far as possible with Darryn Peterson leading the team.

Kansas Announces Major Coaching Move After Disappointing Season

The Kansas Jayhawks have been one of the premier college basketball programs in the country over the past several years, led by head coach Bill Self. Last season, Kansas entered the year as the No. 1 team in the AP preseason poll. Advertisement The Jayhawks were expected to compete for a national title, behind one of the top players in the nation, Hunter Dickinson, but they struggled. Kansas was defeated in the third round of the Big 12 championship, falling at the hands of Caleb Love and Arizona. They entered the NCAA Tournament as a No. 7 seed and wound up being upset by John Calipari and the Arkansas Razorbacks. After the season, the Jayhawks made a key coaching move, looking to revamp their staff in hopes of bouncing back from a head-scratching year. Kansas hired Jacque Vaughn as an assistant coach. "Welcome home, Jacque Vaughn," posted the official social media account of the Kansas Jayhawks. "The Kansas great returns to Lawrence as an assistant coach." "We're very excited to welcome Jacque and (his wife) Laura into the fold," Self said, per release. "I've known Jacque from a distance for several years now and have always admired how he has conducted himself professionally and how he has treated people. We lost an awesome coach in Norm (Roberts) when he retired but feel very fortunate to have replaced him with a tremendous Jayhawk that has a unique and impressive resume." Jacque Vaughn also had some words on his return to Kansas, having played for the Jayhawks from 1993 to 1997. Kansas hires former standout and NBA coach Jacque Vaughn as an assistant on Bill Self's staff

Kansas hired former All-American and NBA coach Jacque Vaughn to be an assistant on Bill Self's staff Wednesday, bringing one of the most beloved and accomplished players in school history back to campus after nearly three decades. Vaughn will replace Norm Roberts, who announced his retirement after 37 years in coaching earlier this month. 'The game of basketball has provided me the incredible privilege to mentor, coach and compete alongside some of the best in the game,' Vaughn said. The 50-year-old Vaughn, who spent five-plus seasons as the head coach of the Orlando Magic and Brooklyn Nets, becomes the first former NBA coach to join a Jayhawks coaching staff. The Nets fired him in February 2024. Vaughn played under Roy Williams at Kansas from 1993-97 and finished his career as the school and Big Eight's leader with 804 assists. He was a second-team All-American as a senior and had his jersey retired by the school on Dec. 21, 2002. Vaughn was a first-round pick of the Utah Jazz in 1997 and wound up spending 12 seasons in the NBA, helping the San Antonio Spurs win the 2007 championship. After his playing career, he spent 2010-12 as an assistant with the Spurs before becoming head coach of the Magic, where he failed to make the playoffs in two-plus seasons. He got another chance in Brooklyn, taking the Nets to a pair of playoff appearances, and has a career record of 129-226 as an NBA head coach. 'I've known Jacque from a distance for several years now and have always admired how he has conducted himself professionally and how he has treated people,' Self said.
