NRL cult hero Willie Mason throws down stunning challenge to one of Australia's top female footy stars: 'I'd smash her'

Footy cult hero Willie Mason may have retired in 2016 - but that hasn't stopped him from challenging NRLW flyer Jaime Chapman to a sprint race over 40 metres. Mason, 45, was never short of confidence in his decorated career - and it seems nothing has changed as the premiership-winning forward transitions into sports podcasting with fellow ex-NRL player Justin Horo. At the recent Magic Round in Brisbane, Mason confidently declared he would have Chapman's measure, much to the amusement of the NSW Blues winger. 'I'd smash you in the 40 (metre sprint),' Mason began. A bemused Chapman - who will turn out for the Gold Coast Titans in the NRLW competition come July - responded 'no you wouldn't' - and then the banter went to another level between the pair. 'I told her I'm sub five (seconds) across 40 minutes,' Mason confirmed to Horo on their increasingly popular Levels Network podcast. Horo then revealed Mason 'started throwing out stats' in a bid to rattle Chapman, but she was having none of it. 'Credit to Chappo, she held her own,' Horo told listeners. In typical Mason style, the Clive Churchill Medal winner refused to back down, urging Chapman to organise a winner-takes-all dash. Chapman was far from intimidated, declaring she 'will take part for content' which will appear on social media. It comes as Chapman - who dates Dolphins NRL speedster Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow - was recently targeted in a deepfake photo attack online. She also revealed it isn't the first time someone has used artificial intelligence (AI) to produce a doctored photograph of her. The 23-year-old took to Instagram to slam the 'scary' and 'damaging' effect the deepfake images have had on her mental health. 'Have a good day to everyone except those who make fake AI photos of other people,' she wrote. 'AI is scary these days. 'Next time think of how damaging this can be to someone and their loved ones. 'This has happened a few times now and it needs to stop.' Chapman's words were accompanied by what appears to be the original image that was subsequently doctored. Before it became the subject of a deepfake, the photo showed Chapman taking a selfie as she sat on a bed in a gold bikini.

Gold Coast Titans, Jaime Chapman working with NSW Police over deepfake AI images of NRLW star

The Gold Coast Titans are supporting NRLW star Jaime Chapman after she spoke out about fake AI images of her being posted on the internet. Chapman is set to line up on the wing against Queensland as NSW tries to secure the Women's State of Origin shield at Sydney Football Stadium on Thursday. But the 23-year-old was rocked in the lead-up by deepfake images being spread online. "Have good day to everyone except those who make fake AI photos of other people. All love," she wrote on her Instagram stories on Sunday. Do you have a story idea about women in sport? Email us abcsport5050@ "Next time, think of how damaging this can be to someone and their loved ones. "This has happened a few times now and it needs to stop." Chapman and the Titans are currently working with the NRL integrity unit and NSW Police to try to find who was behind the "production and distribution of malicious fake images". "Jaime is an incredible role model for not just our club, but for the game as a whole," Titans chief executive Steve Mitchell said. "Not only is she a star on the field with the Titans and the Blues, but her continued work in the community is exemplary as she continues to inspire young girls of all ages on and off the field. "It's hugely disappointing to see her victimised in this way and we will continue to support Jaime and work with the NRL and authorities on this matter. "We will always stand up to online bullying and the creation of such defamatory false content that Jaime has been subjected to, and I wholeheartedly join with her in condemning those who have produced such vile material." Chapman is one of the best players in the women's league, dominating with her speed and power at centre, wing or fullback. She scored three tries in a losing Titans effort in the 2023 grand final but had a surprisingly quiet Origin I in Brisbane two weeks ago after lighting up last year's series with two sensational long-range tries. She and her Sky Blues teammates will be looking to lock up the shield with a victory at the SFS on Thursday night after winning the series opener 32-12 at Lang Park. Game III will be played at Hunter Stadium in Newcastle on Thursday, May 29.

‘Scary': NRLW player goes public over disturbing image

NSW star Jaime Chapman has gone public after becoming the victim of a deepfake AI attack. The Gold Coast Titans winger on Monday hit out after seeing doctored images of herself swirling around cyberspace. The 23-year-old told her 86,000 Instagram followers it was not the first time images she has shared on social media have been distorted through deepfake AI programs. FOX LEAGUE, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every game of every round in the 2025 NRL Telstra Premiership, LIVE in 4K with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Her Instagram post showed a high rise photo of a beach and an inset image, believed to be the fake AI image, of herself posing for a mirror selfie in a golden bikini. It was a public plea for whoever is responsible to stop. 'Have a good day to everyone except those who make fake ai photos of other people,' she posted. She also wrote: 'Next time think of how damaging this can be to someone and their loved ones. 'This has happened a few times now and it needs to stop.' Alongside the bikini pic Chapman wrote: 'AI is scary these days'. Code Sports reports the NRL has been made aware of the deepfake images and has contacted the NRLW club and the representative player to offer support. It is an unwanted distraction for Chapman to deal with as she prepares to suit up for Women's State of Origin Game 2 at Allianz Stadium on Thursday night. The Blues won the series opener 32-12 at Suncorp Stadium on May 1 and can secure the series win with victory on Thursday. Chapman is currently in a relationship with Dolphins star Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow with the pair going public with their romance in December. She has been playing for the Titans for three seasons after previous stints with the Sharks, Dragons and Broncos. It has been a turbulent 2025 for Chapman, who has made a miraculous recovery after fracturing her back playing for the Indigenous All Stars less than three months ago. Chapman was back on the field last month after recovering from a fracture in her L2 vertebrae in her lower lumbar spine. She was worried at the time of the injury that her entire season was over. 'I've never broken a bone before so pretty hectic one for a first bone break,' she told Code Sports. 'But it was quite painful. I played through it not knowing I had a broken bone and then I got a scan when I got home and I couldn't move very much. 'I was quite shocked because I could still do most of the movements but the way I pulled up I was extremely sore the next day. I knew something was wrong. 'I didn't really know what to think of it and I was pretty stressed about will I play Origin, will I be OK for NRLW, but I guess it sounds worse than it actually was. I was very lucky with the type of break that it was and where it was.' Tabuai-Fidow in February said his 'pretty special' relationship with Chapman was the main reason he felt more comfortable entering the 2025 season than any other previous year. The only problem the adorable couple face is their state allegiances. Tabuai-Fidow has been a point-scoring machine for Queensland in recent years, giving Chapman a headache to decide who she should be cheering for. 'I'll support him no matter what he does and no matter what team he plays for I'll be going for him, but not the Maroons,' she said in February. 'It's quite hard when you're both in the spotlight and when we came out as being together it was a pretty good response from the community. We've been really good and really happy.'

Jaime Chapman: Glamorous women's footy star lashes out over fake AI photo of her in a revealing outfit

NRLW star Jaime Chapman has lashed out online after being targeted in a deepfake photo attack, revealing it's not the first time someone has used AI to produce a doctored photograph of her. The 23-year-old took to Instagram on Monday to slam the 'scary' and 'damaging' effect the deepfake images have had on her. 'Have a good day to everyone except those who make fake ai photos of other people,' she wrote. 'AI is scary these days. 'Next time think of how damaging this can be to someone and their loved ones. 'This has happened a few times now and it needs to stop.' Her words were accompanied by what appears to be the original image that was subsequently doctored. Before it became the subject of a deepfake, the photo showed Chapman taking a selfie as she sat on a bed in a gold bikini. Chapman's comments come shortly after she helped cement her place as one of the biggest stars in the women's game by helping NSW smash Queensland 32-12 in the opening match of this year's State of Origin series. After first cracking the big time with the Cronulla Sharks as a teenager in 2019, she has gone on to star for the Dragons, Broncos and now Gold Coast in the NRLW. Chapman has gone on to represent the Blues five times, while also starring for the Jillaroos national side and Indigenous All Stars in five matches. Earlier this year she opened up about her battle to return to the field after breaking one of the vertebrae in her lower back while playing for the Indigenous team in February this year. Scans the following day revealed the fracture - and for the next fortnight, Chapman barely moved as she looked to recover as quick as possible. 'I've never broken a bone before, so [it was a] pretty hectic one,' she said. 'It was quite painful. The way I pulled up extremely sore the next day I knew something was wrong. 'I was stressed about Origin, will I be OK for NRLW....[in the end] I was very lucky with the type of break that it was and where it was.' Her status as one of the biggest names for the NSW team could lead to some awkward moments with her boyfriend, Dolphins star Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, who plays on the wing for Queensland in men's Origin. 'It'll be pretty weird when it comes around,' Tabuai-Fidow said before the women's interstate series kicked off this year. 'But she's got my support.' Chapman said she will back Tabuai-Fidow when he runs out for the Maroons, despite being on opposite ends of the game's fiercest rivalry. 'I'll support him no matter what he does and no matter what team he plays for,' she said. 'I'll be going for him... but not the Maroons.' The pair became arguably footy's most popular couple when their relationship became public last December. Fellow representative women's players Jessica Sergis and Kezie Apps responded with love-heart emojis, while numerous footy fans also weighed in on the glamour couple. 'Most athletic child in the world,' one supporter wrote in response, as they referenced the couple's famed athleticism when clutching a Steeden. Another said: 'Move over Nathan & Mary', a cheeky comparison to Panthers superstar Nathan Cleary and his girlfriend, Matildas and Manchester City attacking ace Mary Fowler.

Five quick hits from Women's State of Origin I: Debutants shine as Keeley Davis makes gouging accusation

Eye gouges, hair pulls, a classic duel and a glorious night for the new kids on the block. Here are five quick hits from the Women's State of Origin series opener at Lang Park. 1. Playing in the doubles Ali Ali Brigginshaw made an uncharacteristic blunder in the opening set. ( Getty Images: Chris Hyde ) Ali Brigginshaw has done just about everything possible in rugby league, but hasn't been immune from quiet games in Origin in recent years. Sometimes she'll start slow, weather questions about if the game has passed her by at long last, then she'll come back out and remind everyone why she's been at the top as long as she has. This time she got her blunder out of the way early, launching the first kick of the match out on the full. It put her and her Maroons behind the eight ball to start. Do you have a story idea about women in sport? Email us 2. Keeley's complaint As Isabelle Kelly celebrated NSW's second try, she was approached by teammate Keeley Davis. The pair got the attention of referee Belinda Sharpe, accusing a Maroons player of an eye gouge in the previous set. All Sharpe could do was put the incident on report, with Sienna Lofipo believed to be the accused. 3. Jaime & Julia Origin I may have been the first time Jaime Chapman (right) has been outplayed by her opposite number. ( AAP: Dave Hunt ) Jaime Chapman is perhaps the best athlete in women's rugby league and a terrifying presence who is a threat to break any game open at any moment. Julia Robinson is one of the only players who can challenge her for sheer athleticism and try-scoring brilliance was marked up against her in the series opener. Unfortunately, most of rugby league attack is designed around avoiding having your winger one on one against each other. But we still got a couple of moments late in the first half. Robinson won both — dominating Chapman in a ball-and-all tackle before out-leaping her for a high ball at the other end of the field. Two more clean bomb catches and another monstrous tackle from Robinson at the start of the second half left Chapman looking outmatched for perhaps the first time in her Origin career. By the end of the match, Robinson made a costly error out of exhaustion and ultimately was on the wrong side of the scoreboard. So we'll call it a draw and get ready for round two. 4. Grade 1 — Hairless Tamika Upton is tough to stop in full flight. ( Getty Images: Hannah Peters ) The rugby league world has been buzzing about high contact of late, but we mercifully got through the whole game without anyone being sent off the field. ABC Sport Daily is your daily sports conversation. We dive into the biggest story of the day and get you up to speed with everything else that's making headlines. We did, however, see a player reported for high contact. Or should we say hair contact. Faced with the prospect of a flying Tamika Upton, Blues five-eighth Tiana Penitani-Gray reached for whatever she could grab and managed to nab a lock of the dynamic Queensland fullback's hair. It cost NSW a penalty, but may well have saved a try. Upton might consider an up-do next time out. 5. Day for the debutants Reigning NRLW fullback of the year Abbi Church was one of four players to score on debut. ( Getty Images: Hannah Peters ) With eight first-timers on the field, it was always going to be tough to keep them out of the game, but even considering the sheer volume of them, the debutants were electric in Origin I. NSW winger Jayme Fressard got a double either side of half-time, while prop Ellie Johnston and fullback Abbi Church chimed in with crucial four-pointers late in the piece. Loading Twitter content For the Maroons, centre Rory Owen crossed early and Tavarna Papali'i spent the entire night folding ball-handlers in half. On the other end of the spectrum was Jasmine Peters, with the Maroons winger unable to take part in the second half after a nasty head clash.
