2 held for murder of youth who objected to their drunk ruckus

After a youth was allegedly beaten to death for opposing a group of drunkards who were creating a public nuisance on Sunday night, there has been tension in the Bakultala area of Jaynagar in South 24 Parganas district. Police have registered an FIR against 13 people and arrested two of them. According to police sources, Sayem Khan intervened when a group of intoxicated men in Buichbati, a locality in Bakultala, allegedly used obscene language and behaved indecently in public. Residents said the men assaulted Khan, who later died of his injuries while being taken to a Kolkata hospital. Tension peaked on Monday morning when residents blocked the road in protest, demanding the arrest of the accused. 'The alleged attackers, identified as Moktar Naskar and Qutubuddin Naskar from Rupnagar village, were among the men who returned to Buichbati on Sunday and attacked the Khan, resulting in fatal injuries. Both have been arrested. The investigation is on,' said a senior police officer. Khan's family claimed the two arrested accused have a history of criminal activities, including theft and robbery, and have frequently caused disturbances while intoxicated. Cab driver, aide held for ‘threatening' US tourist at Kolkata airport

THE BIDHANNAGAR police on Thursday arrested a taxi driver and his accomplice for allegedly threatening a US tourist after he landed at the Kolkata airport. The police action came after the tourist, Dustin, uploaded a video of a purported conversation with the two persons on his YouTube channel that soon surfaced on other social media platforms. The police identified the arrested as Manoj Roy (52) and Alamgir Molla (34), a taxi driver. A suo motu case has been registered at the NSCBI Airport Police Station, police said. According to Dustin, his 'unsettling experience' began shortly after landing in Kolkata when he booked a local taxi to his hotel on Park Street. Despite clear instructions, the driver intentionally drove him nearly 15 km in the wrong direction towards a different hotel in Rajarhat, claimed Dustin. When Dustin confronted the driver about the incorrect destination and refused to pay the inflated fare, the situation escalated. Another man entered the vehicle on the pretext of mediation and soon threatened Dustin with physical harm. Eventually, Dustin claimed, he was compelled to switch to another taxi. However, before he could leave, the second man demanded an additional Rs 100 for 'parking and petrol,' forcing Dustin to pay a total of Rs 800 for a trip that would have cost Rs 500-600 via an app-based cab. The video uploaded by Dustin surfaced on other social media platforms as well and action was taken, police said. Sweety Kumari reports from West Bengal for The Indian Express. Mob barges into police station seeking ‘handover' of stabbing suspect, 10 held

TEN PERSONS were arrested after a mob of around 150 people allegedly barged into a police station in the Bangaon area of North 24 Parganas, in West Bengal on Wednesday, demanding that a man who earlier allegedly stabbed and injured four persons be 'handed over' to them. Police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the crowd, leading to the arrests. The incident took place after a 'mentally unstable' 35-year-old man went on a 'stabbing spree', an officer said. Police soon apprehended him and brought him to the station. Citing local residents, sources claimed that the stabbing suspect may also be involved in the murder of his parents. A seven-member police team has been formed to verify this claim and carry out further investigation, said an officer. Soon, a large mob, including some people who are from the area where the four people were stabbed, gathered on the premises of the police station, the officer said. 'The mob demanded that the accused be handed over to them. Police dispersed the crowd and arrested 10 persons,' said Bangaon Superintendent of Police Dinesh Kumar A search is on to nab others involved in the 'attempted vandalism', police said. Police force has been deployed in the area. In a post on X, the Bangaon police wrote, 'There is no communal angle to the incident. Request all not to heed any kind of rumours. Rumour-mongers, as always, will be sternly dealt with as per law.' Sweety Kumari reports from West Bengal for The Indian Express. Six dead as passenger van, bus collide in West Bengal's Nadia

All six occupants of a passenger van died in a collision with a bus on West Bengal's Krishnanagar-Karimpur highway, near Mahishbathan-Kathalia in Nadia district, on Tuesday morning. The accident, which occurred around 7:30 am, involved a van carrying passengers from the Najirpur area of Nadia district to Digha in Purba Medinipur and a bus traveling in the opposite direction with its own passengers. The force of the impact caused the van to crumple, trapping the deceased within the wreckage. The bus driver reportedly lost control after the collision and crashed into a roadside tree, resulting in injuries to some of the bus passengers. Residents were the first to respond, initiating rescue efforts. Police arrived at the scene, eventually managing to extricate the bodies, which were then sent for post-mortem examination. 'Sadly, all the van passengers had already succumbed to their injuries. The injured bus passengers are currently receiving medical treatment at the Karimpur Rural Hospital,' said an official. Police are yet to disclose the identities of the deceased. Sweety Kumari reports from West Bengal for The Indian Express. She is a journalist with over a decade of experience in the media industry. Kolkata couple grieving after daughter's death attempt suicide in Ganga, saved

Overcome with grief after the death of their 11-year-old daughter due to a kidney ailment, a couple attempted suicide while travelling in a launch in Kolkata on Saturday but were saved by its staff's quick thinking and swift action. The incident occurred near Majh Ganga when the launch was travelling from Howrah towards Ahiritola. The other passengers were shocked when the couple attempted suicide. Without hesitation, the launch staff leapt into the river with safety tyres and rescued both individuals. The couple were then given first aid on the launch. The Malipanchghara police promptly arrived and provided further primary treatment to the distressed couple. They have contacted the couple's family. 'The couple, residents of Lilua Bhatnagar, were deeply traumatised by the recent passing of their only daughter, who succumbed to a complex kidney problem at a young age. It is believed that this profound loss led to their desperate act,' said an official. The couple had boarded the launch at Salkia's Bandhaghat, intending to travel to Ahiritola. The launch staff are being commended for their courageous and timely intervention that prevented a tragic outcome. The authorities are also considering how to best support the mentally distraught couple. Sweety Kumari reports from West Bengal for The Indian Express.
