Massachusetts Governor demands answers after ICE arrests Milford High School student
Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey took to social media Sunday evening to demand answers after ICE agents arrested a high school student heading to volleyball practice over the weekend. The student, 18-year-old Marcelo Gomes, is a junior at Milford High School in Milford, Massachusetts. In her post, Healey says she is "disturbed and outraged" and that she wants answers immediately explaining why the student was taken into immigration enforcement's custody. "I'm demanding that ICE provide immediate information about why he was arrested, where he is and how his due process is being protected," she s. In the post she blames the Trump admin for what she describes as an attempt to create fear. "The Trump Administration continues to create fear in our communities, and it's making us all less safe," her post states. In her statement, Healey claims that the student was detained on Saturday without any warning or subsequent explanation provided to state officials. "Yet again, local officials and law enforcement have been left in the dark with no heads up and no answers to their questions," she said. The community gathered to protest outside of Milford on Sunday. Hundreds demanded Gomes be set free and that ICE stop harassing members of their community. U.S. Rep. Jake Auchincloss, a Democrat who represents Milford in Congress, attended the protest and made note on X that Gomes was "enrolled in honors classes, a coaching assistant for girls volleyball [and] player for boys volleyball, and a member of the school band." "This administration has its public safety priorities backwards. It pardons cop-beaters from Jan. 6 but detains high-school volleyball players. It makes gun-purchaser background checks harder while pushing for tax breaks to buy silencers for pistols. This reckless behavior does not make the residents of Milford safer, and I stand with the community in support of law [and] order," he wrote. Milford School District Superintendent Kevin McIntyre says that Gomes' detention is one of many apprehensions to take place in the southern Massachusetts community. McIntyre says the district cannot take any role in immigration enforcement, but they will "support all of our students and families, including those who are immigrants to the United States." "They are members of the community, students in our classrooms, athletes that compete representing Milford, musicians, artists, friends, and neighbors. We will do everything in our power to support our students and families during these difficult times," he said in his statement. Sunday morning was Milford High School's graduation and Healey says a day of celebration has now been tarnished. "My heart goes out to the Milford community on what was supposed to be a celebratory graduation day," she said.

Milford community rallies after 18-year-old high school student was detained by ICE
A community is outraged. Friends, lawmakers, and the Milford Teachers Association have all called the arrest of an 18-year-old Milford High School student cruel and traumatizing, and they stand to support his right to an education, no matter where he's from. Hundreds of people protested outside Milford's town hall on Sunday, where chants of 'Free Marcelo' could be heard. The superintendent confirms an 18-year-old student was taken into custody off campus, and he says the school district plays no part in immigration enforcement. Many of those protesting were students, still donning their caps and gowns, right after graduating Sunday morning. Among those protesting was state representative Jake Auchincloss. He says that the town of Milford doesn't condone the act of detaining a student. 'If you're here illegally and you break the law, you should be deported,' Auchincloss says. 'Milford does not agree that if you've been here since before kindergarten, you're an honor student, you're a member of the high school band, that you should be getting bullied by immigration authorities while you're carpooling with your friends.' The principal of Milford High addressed the crowd during the ceremony, saying this community is grieving. 'Now, as hard as it is, I urge you to be present in this moment right here.' Yago Sampaio was with Marcelo when he was detained by ICE on Saturday morning. He says they were in a car, on their way to volleyball practice. 'It was honestly like a wake-up call for me,' Sampaio said, 'In that moment that there was no easy way of kind of getting out of this.' Marcelo's friends say he was supposed to be playing the drums in the school band for the ceremony. One of Marcelo's friends says he's like a brother to him. 'We're very good friends with him, he's like a brother to me, and this is so disappointing that I have to see this happen for him to get out. He's a great human being and never did anything, so I don't understand why we're going through all of this, especially on a day like this, where we graduated.' Elizabeth Grady, a Milford parent, calls the situation 'terrifying'. 'His parents are terrified, his classmates are terrified, his teammates are terrified, and students shouldn't be terrified going to volleyball practice; this is not the United States of America that we signed up for.' The Milford Teachers Association has also issued a statement regarding the detainment. Nick Molinari, president of the Milford Teachers Association, says that the student should've been at volleyball practice. 'Instead, ICE agents targeted one of our students in a deliberate act of cruelty, traumatizing his family, friends and peers. This is immoral, unnecessary and should be universally condemned. We will not stand by while the rights and humanity of our students are violated.' 'The Milford Teachers Association proudly stands with its students and the residents of Milford in opposing this dangerous shift in operations,' added Molinari. 'We are committed to defending every student's right to learn, grow, and be treated with dignity – no matter where they come from.' Boston 25 has reached out to ICE for comment and details regarding the situation, and a spokesperson has said that they are still gathering facts. This is a developing story. Poll: Democratic voters prefer "populism" over "abundance"
Democratic voters prefer a populist message over one that focuses on an "abundance agenda," according to a new poll by Demand Progress. Why it matters: Democrats are asking themselves some hard questions as they ponder how they lost the 2024 election — and consider how they might win in 2028. On the economic front, some elected officials, like Rep. Jake Auchincloss (D-Mass.), want to embrace a version of the "abundance" agenda that liberal writers Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson lay out in a new book titled (ahem) "Abundance." Klein gave voice to the abundance argument at a policy retreat for Senate Democrats this month. Other party leaders want to focus their energy on challenging President Trump on the populist front. Think of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, trying to dare Republicans to vote against tax cuts for billionaires. Driving the news: The survey of 1,200 registered voters by Demand Progress, a progressive advocacy organization, was designed to supply some hard data for the debate. It defined the abundance argument by starting off with this sentence: "The big problem is 'bottlenecks' that make it harder to produce housing, expand energy production, or build new roads and bridges." The populist argument was described as "The big problem is that big corporations have way too much power over our economy and our government." By the numbers: 55.6% of all voters preferred the populist argument, compared to 43.5% who said they would be more likely to vote for a candidate who offered the abundance argument. Those preferences were even stronger among Democratic and independent voters. 72.5% of Democrats reacted positively to the populist argument compared to 39.6% for Republicans. It was 55.4% for independents. Given a direct choice, 59% of Democrats preferred the populist argument, compared to just 16.8% liking the abundance one. The bottom line: "What these voters want is clear: a populist agenda that takes on corporate power and corruption," said Emily Peterson-Cassin, corporate power director at Demand Progress. Methodology: The survey of 1,200 registered voters was conducted on the YouGov platform from May 8 to May 13, 2025. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3.09 percentage points.
