Shanghai E-Prix FP1 Results: Last season's winner Antonio Felix Da Costa tops again, Nyck de Vries finishes second
Image credit: Formula E Antonio Felix Da Costa seems all set to register another win in Shanghai. The Tag Heuer Porsche driver, who clinched one of the Season 10 double-header races, topped the first free practice session at the Shanghai International Circuit on Friday. Impressively, he clocked a time four seconds faster than last season's best. Mahindra Racing's Nick De Vries secured the second spot, while Jake Hughes of Maserati MSG Racing came in third. Shanghai E-Prix 2025 FP1 results Antonio Da Costa had shared a post on Instagram ahead of the Shanghai E-Prix: 'Race Week. Last year we went to Shanghai to get a cup! Let's try to get two this year. See you soon,' he wrote, alongside a picture of his winning celebration from last year. His dominance in the practice session indicates that he is in top form again this year. Jake Hughes also appears to have a podium finish in sight. Last season, he was both the pole winner and the second-place podium finisher in Race 2 of the Shanghai E-Prix. At the time, he was driving for NEOM McLaren; this season, he is representing Maserati MSG Racing. Antonio's teammate, Pascal Wehrlein—who secured the second podium spot alongside Da Costa in last season's Shanghai E-Prix—missed out this time by finishing fourth in the practice session. However, Wehrlein remains a strong contender, having already claimed three podiums this season. He was followed by Jaguar TCS Racing's Nick Cassidy in fifth and NEOM McLaren driver Taylor Barnard in sixth, despite the latter leading during the second half of the session. CUPRA Kiro driver Dan Ticktum led the early part of the practice session but dropped to seventh by the end. Andretti's Jake Dennis finished eighth, followed by Nissan's Norman Nato in ninth, while Stoffel Vandoorne of Maserati MSG Racing rounded out the top ten. Maserati MSG driver Jake Hughes looking at the 'positive signs' ahead of the Shanghai E-Prix
Image credit: Jake Hughes/Instagram Maserati MSG Racing driver Jake Hughes may not be having an ideal Formula E season, but the British racer has a lot to look forward to in Shanghai at the upcoming double header. He had secured second place on the podium in part of the 2024 Shanghai E-Prix, giving him added confidence to aim high in the upcoming race. He earned that podium while driving for NEOM McLaren last year, before making the switch to Maserati MSG. Jake Hughes's performance this season Jake Hughes has participated in just 40 races so far and has already claimed two podium finishes, including one at the Jeddah E-Prix earlier this year. He currently stands fifteenth in the Formula E Driver Standings with 27 points. He finished tenth in the Mexico Round 2 race and fifth in Jeddah Round 3 before securing a podium in Round 4 in Jeddah. Since then, however, his on-track performance has seen a decline. At the recently held Tokyo E-Prix double header this month, Hughes finished last in both Round 8 and Round 9 races. Sharing a slow-motion video of himself in a helmet days after the race, Hughes wrote on Instagram, 'Japan was a rough one. Fast in all practice sessions but qualifying really curtailed our whole weekend. But some positive signs at least that will hopefully be turning our season around very shortly. #maserati #formulae #tokyoeprix #tokyoeprix. ' Boosting his morale, the official Formula E Instagram handle commented on his post: 'Onto Shanghai,' along with the raising hands emoji. During the Tokyo E-Prix, Hughes also shared several pictures of his Maserati MSG livery on the wet track, captioned: 'Wetter than a pocket full of Otters.' Heavy rain affected the first Round 8 race, which followed a grid order determined by free practice results. Formula E extends London E-Prix deal with Excel London
Formula E has announced it will continue running the London ePrix around the Excel exhibition centre until at least 2026, with the indoor/outdoor spectacle allowing both parties to drive their commitments to sustainability and the environment. Formula E brings a global television audience to Excel London, a unique event for the exhibition centre as it is the only one of over 300 events held annually to utilise its entire 125,000 square metres of space. Advertisement The race itself catches the eye as it passes through the exhibition space while also running externally parallel to the building, allowing Formula E to stage a race in the capital of the United Kingdom, just a stone's throw from the centre of London. But, for all of these shared positives, the alliance – which has now been extended until at least 2026 and the end of the series' GEN3 Evo cars – also sees the all-electric series align with Excel London on their shared green ambitions. The first race at the Excel took place in during season seven, a double-header in July 2021 that marked Formula E's return to London following a five-year absence, having previously been located in Battersea Park. 'Formula E has formally announced the extension of its contract with Excel London until at least 2026, allowing the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship to continue using the world's first and only indoor-outdoor racetrack until the end of its GEN3 Evo era,' a statement confirming the new deal read. Advertisement 'The extension means that the East London location is predicted to host the final race of the season 12 calendar, where 22 world-class drivers will compete for the coveted drivers', teams' and manufacturers' world championship trophies. 'The contract extension also means fans will be able to see the full GEN3 Evo lifespan race as this generation of car will take to the track for the final time in the UK ahead of the much-anticipated all-new GEN4-spec car in late 2026.' Advertisement 'Its unique track conditions and event space offers fans and drivers the very best of our sport, bringing the best racing and entertainment together in a truly unique venue at the heart of the capital, while all delivered sustainably.' Driving that sustainability has become a key branch of the agreement between Formula E and the venue, as Darren Norman, director of immersive entertainment and events Excel London, explained to 'If we look back when we first started those early meetings on creating this sort of Scalextric, indoor- outdoor, up-and-down ramps through an exhibition hall, I remember looking at everyone thinking, is this even possible?' he said. 'But you've got a lot of very smart track designers and technical people who know far more about how to make that work than I ever will, and as soon as I heard it is technically possible, then you start going into solution mode and saying, well what do we need? Advertisement 'What do we need to do with the floor indoors because it's polished concrete, not very good for turning and actually, with the polyformer we use, we have more grip inside than outside on the tarmac, all part of fairly considerable work needed to bring in a track that was FIA-compliant.' Oliver Rowland, Nissan Formula E Team, 1st position, as he finishes the race Oliver Rowland, Nissan Formula E Team, 1st position, as he finishes the race Dom Romney / Motorsport Images Dom Romney / Motorsport Images A track was eventually created, signed off and used in 2021, and the unique layout certainly caught the eye. But since then, the partnership between championship and host venue as developed into much more. Advertisement 'All of the concrete blocks needed to make a racetrack, Formula E used to store them and then lorry them in, but they are a carbon-neutral championship so what we do is we now store then on site, that's 260 blocks on site at the Excel,' revealed Norman. 'There is also no car access to the venue, everyone arrives by public transport, which again really feeds into Formula E's key strategy on that net-zero pledge. 'That is also a nice segue into the fact the Excel just won the Exhibition News' ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) award for being the best in the UK, so we also take it very, very seriously. We are carbon-neutral, and we've now set our own net-zero target to 2045. We're already quite well on the way to that.' Charitable work has also been undertaken as a collaboration between Excel London and Formula E, helping the immediate areas around the venue, including Richard's House Children's Hospice and – through the championship's Better Futures Fund – providing a €25,000 grant to buy an electric van for Community Food Enterprise, a food bank charity in Newham, and allow it to complete deliveries in a sustainable manner and avoid ULEZ (ultra-low emission zone) tariffs. Advertisement The worldwide exposure also brings brand awareness and value to Excel London, as Norman concludes: 'It is a very important piece of business to us. Our business model is relatively straightforward. We are an open church to anybody that wants to create an environment to bring people together. 'The fact that Formula E takes all of that campus means it's important for us from a calendar perspective, but it's also a really great event for us to host because it shows a different side to the venue, it shows what we can do.' The 2025 London ePrix will close out season 11 of Formula E, with two rounds taking place at Excel London on July 26-27. To read more articles visit our website.

Formula E Drivers Are Believers: 'We Need to Push People' Toward EVs
Count as one who actively encourages the public these days to switch from piston-driven, gasoline-powered engines. 'I think they are much better than the normal combustion engines,' said Vandoorne. Vandoorne's Maserati teammate, Jake Hughes, is a believer now, too. Since Maserati MSG Racing driver Stoffel Vandoorne joined the ABB FIA Formula E Championship eight years ago, he has become a proponent of electric vehicles and today actively encourages the public to switch from piston-driven, gasoline-powered engines.'The most impressive thing is seeing how much the world actually has evolved towards electric cars,' Vandoorne said as the global all-electric open-wheel racing series prepares to make its lone U.S. visit April 10-12 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. 'Even eight to 10 years ago, people were very reluctant towards electric cars. And don't get me wrong, some of them still are,' he said. "And I think it's still something that we need to work on as a community, to push people towards electric cars. But since my involvement informally and having company cars being electric cars, as well, I think it's something you have to experience.'I think they are much better than the normal combustion engines,' said Vandoorne, who drove in Formula 1 with McLaren in 2017 and 2018. 'They're much easier to use. The power delivery on them is a lot nicer. And I would say maybe one of the only constraints that we have is the infrastructure that is not 100% ready yet. That's something as a community that we need to keep working on, to improve the infrastructure.'But I also feel like with Formula E, with the technology that we are producing there, especially the battery technology, I think that is going to be a game changer for the future,' Vandoorne said, 'because I feel like a lot of the worries right now for people are obviously the range of electric cars. If you look at the evolution through the last five, 10 years, we've hit some pretty big milestones already. And I think that's only going to get better and better, where we won't have any constraints anymore. So for me it's positive, and I feel like we're on the right trajectory.'His Maserati teammate, Jake Hughes, is a believer now, too, despite not having any experience with EVs before signing on to race in Formula E. "I hadn't experienced electric cars, but I'd watched the races on TV and was very attracted to the competition side, let's say, and how high quality the drivers are [and] the teams are," Hughes said. "So that was what attracted me to Formula E. But, of course, once you learn more about the technology, not just what we have on the track but also what the brands provided on the road, it's extremely exciting. And for me personally, I have had the amazing opportunity to now be an owner of a Gracale [Maserati's luxury SUV].'Having that much instant power, that much comfort, that much sight, weirdly, that much silence is super-addictive, as well, when you're driving to and from on the road to work and back... super- smooth. It's very addictive, and I can't see myself at the moment having a life without an electric road car.
