New water treatment plants to quench Prayagraj's thirst
1 2 3 Prayagraj: A new raw water treatment plant is being built in Prayagraj's Naini area, promising to end the long-standing drinking water shortage for over 38,000 households. Officials estimate the plant will be functional in around two years. Additionally, a comprehensive water supply plan is being implemented for the extended city limits of Prayagraj, covering areas like Jhunsi, Phaphamau, and Jhalwa. To guarantee potable water supply, treatment plants will be established in Naini, Jhunsi, and Jhalwa as part of the initiative. The jalkal (water) department has initiated the construction of the Naini plant and associated pipeline laying work. The Jahangirabad Naini water treatment plant project, worth Rs 421.23 crore, includes pipeline laying and construction of nine overhead tanks. Although the tender process was completed last year, construction work was delayed due to the Maha Kumbh, but now the work has commenced. According to the executive engineer of the Jal Sansthan, boundary walls and foundation work have started, with machinery installation and electrical work set to begin soon. For the extended municipal areas, a detailed water supply plan has been drawn up with a total investment of Rs 957.47 crore. Apart from Naini, raw water treatment plants will also be set up in Jhunsi and Jhalwa. Water supply in Phaphamau and Mahewa will be augmented through the use of multiple tube wells. The construction process for the raw water treatment plant in Jhunsi has also started. In Jhunsi area, an intake well with a water capacity of 8.10 crore litres is being developed. The project includes the construction of a 34km main pipeline and a 541-kilometre distribution pipeline. Additionally, nine overhead tanks will be built, and the project is expected to provide water connections to approximately 38,065 households. Another major development is taking place in Phaphamau, where an intake well with a capacity of 6.70 crore litres is under construction. The water will be distributed through a 40-kilometre main pipeline and a 490-kilometre distribution network. This project also includes 14 overhead tanks and will serve around 32,729 connections. Likewise, in Jhalwa, the water supply system is being improved through the installation of nine tube wells. This project involves the construction of a 2.5-kilometre main pipeline and a 171km distribution pipeline. Mahewa is also witnessing major water infrastructure work, with an intake well of 2.60 crore litres capacity being installed. This will be supported by a 15-kilometre main pipeline and a 266km distribution pipeline.

Taps run dry in 2 districts amid govt's claims of water coverage
Bageshwar: In stark contrast to the govt's claims of achieving 100% household water coverage under the Jal Jeevan Mission, residents in Bageshwar are grappling with acute water shortages. The ongoing crisis is not only threatening daily life but also severely affecting agriculture. Villagers are now demanding sustainable, long-term solutions that go beyond infrastructure announcements and statistical milestones. While officials recently announced that all 54,659 households in Bageshwar had been connected to tap water, several villages across the district continue to struggle without consistent access to safe drinking water. In Mandalsera, residents have gone without water for the past three days. With domestic taps running dry and traditional sources depleted, people queue through the night at hand pumps to secure enough water for basic needs. "Pipelines were laid and pumps installed, but we still haven't seen a single drop in our homes. Even the old naulas (groundwater spring) have dried up. We have no dependable source left," said Ramesh Gariya, a local resident. Now we're spending our nights there. We've raised complaints, but nothing changes." The community health centre in Kanda has been without water for five days, disrupting patient care and daily operations. In Dhapoli village, residents — mostly women — walk over two kilometres daily to fetch water. "Our backs are breaking," said Darshani Dhapola, another resident. "The taps installed under Jal Jeevan Mission two years ago have never worked." Almora is facing a similar situation. Despite recent rains, villages in the Hawalbagh and Dhauladevi blocks, including Sainar, Talad, Railapali, Kandanoula, Papoli, Bhanoli, Gurudabaj, Maniagar and Toli, continue to rely on water tankers or natural sources. Social worker Vinod Tiwari criticised the inefficiency of costly water projects: "In 2016, Rs 42 crore was spent on the Saryu-Danya Pumping Scheme to serve villages in Danya, Dhyari, Pokhri, and Kalauta. Another Rs 7 crore went into the Gairad Pumping Scheme. But even slight rainfall clogs the rivers with silt, halting supply for days." Amid growing frustration, villagers are threatening protests if the crisis persists. Jal Sansthan's executive engineer CS Dewari has assured that water tankers will be sent to affected areas as a stopgap measure.

Contractors of 3 govt firms booked for negligence in civil work
Dehradun: Contractors of three govt agencies were booked for negligence, and their ongoing infrastructure work suspended for three months following multiple public complaints regarding violations of public safety norms and civil work regulations. Officials said that issues of public inconvenience were reported from Canal Road and Mata Mandir Road areas, where – Jal Sansthan, Gas Authority Of India Ltd (GAIL), and Uttarakhand Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL) – were carrying out roadworks respectively. Authorities said no new work permissions will be granted to the agencies during the suspension period. District magistrate Savin Bansal said, "We received complaints of road cutting against the permission granted. They were putting public safety at risk by leaving the road dug up dangerously. Debris was also left on the road unattended without any cautionary signage. Such violations of directives will not be tolerated." Inspections at the work sites revealed that in some instances, night-time work directives were also flouted, and work equipment was left haphazardly on roadsides. Based on a complaint by PWD additional assistant engineer Anand Kishor, a case was registered against private contractor, Vijay Prakash Thapliyal, associated with the Jal Sansthan at Rajpur police station, under relevant sections of Uttarakhand Public Property Damage Act and the BNS. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gentle Japanese hair growth method for men and women's scalp Hair's Rich Learn More Undo In his complaint, Kishor alleged that the contractor had dug a stretch of around 500m on Canal Road for installation of water pipes which caused inconvenience and endangered safety of commuters.
