Elderly man rescued from house fire in Gelugor, Penang
GEORGE TOWN: An elderly man was rescued after being trapped in a house fire at Taman Island Glades, Gelugor, yesterday.
It is understood that the 73-year-old victim was alone at the time, while two other family members were not at home during the incident.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations John Sagun Francis said they received a distress call at 9.21pm.
He said the firefighting and rescue operation involved 26 personnel from the Jalan Perak Fire and Rescue Station, assisted by teams from the Paya Terubong, Lebuh Pantai and nearby Volunteer Fire Brigade.
"Upon arrival, firefighters found that the blaze had engulfed a terrace house and spread to a neighbouring unit, with one victim reported to be trapped inside.
"The victim was rescued through the back door by firefighters in full protective gear," he said in a statement.
He added that the blaze also damaged a Toyota Camry.
"The fire was brought under control by 11pm, and the operation ended at 12.08am. The cause of the fire, as well as estimated losses, are still under investigation," he said.
