These Are Your Favorite Summer Driving Songs
Unless you frequent private karaoke venues or vast desolate prairie expanses of empty, echoing nothingness, your car is probably the only place where you don't really have restrictions on the volume at which you listen to your music. A car is a place for cranking your stereo, singing along to your heart's content, and parking without embarrassment for who might have heard. But as the mercury rises and the vibes improve as summer comes around, what will you be listening to in your car? Earlier this week, we asked you for your favorite summer driving songs. Today, we're combing through your answers to pick out our favorites. Throw them together into a playlist if you'd like, or grab your personal picks to play on repeat until you arrive at your summer destinations — always just a bit hoarser than when you left. Let's see what kinds of music all you beautiful Jalops are into. Read more: There's A Relic Runway From America's Failed Supersonic Future Hiding In The Everglades There's one thing I really miss about living in the LA area (and this leads to the song choice.) I miss the warm June evenings with the sun starting to set over the Santa Monica pier. The ocean breeze picks up a little bit and takes away some of the heat of the day. The top goes down and the stereo gets turned up. And Jim Morrison belts out "LA Woman" like the worn out blues man that he wanted to musical tastes were formed in the 1980s so my driving playlists have a lot of Depeche Mode, INXS, Tears for Fears, and if I'm in the mood to violate some speed laws and rupture some eardrums, launch into the intro of Paradise City and hang on. There's some country roads to conquer. The Ed Sullivan scene of the Doors movie has lived rent-free in my head for approximately my entire life. RIP to Val Kilmer, truly. Submitted by: Xavier96 I don't know why, but the beginning to Talking Heads "I Zimbra" sounds like the soundtrack to the beginning of an Italian Job-style heist scene. Everybody makes their last preparations, looks at some plot-related memento, and starts their engines. And then the heist begins in earnest. I always feel a little cooler when that song comes on while I'm driving, or better yet, walking to my car.I am very excited for someone to come in here and show me a clip of exactly this, perhaps even in that very-unnecessary remake of The Italian Job. Hey, I liked that remake! The fact that I was seven when it came out surely doesn't factor in. Submitted by: Give Me Tacos or Give Me Death There is no better song to drop the windows (and the top/t-tops/targa top) and cruise to than Panama by Van the sun, drum on the steering wheel, and sing along with your friends. Heck, if you pull up next to me blasting Panama, I'll probably turn my music down and sing along!! "Panama" goes hard as hell and anyone who disagrees is simply, objectively, wrong. Submitted by: Stillnotatony Radar Love, original version or the equally good White Lion cover. Hey! No self-promo! Submitted by: Golden Earring Hollywood Nights, Bob it's dad-rock. Sure, it's old. But, with the windows down on a summer night, it's sublime. I feel like this AOTD is going to be really helpful in terms of putting titles and artists that I grew up listening to on classic rock radio. "Hollywood Nights" was a mainstay of 95.1 WRKI Brookfield-Danbury, A Cumulus Media Station, The Home Of Rock And Roll, I-95. Submitted by: JohnnyWasASchoolBoy The Cars: Moving in Stereo/All Mixed UpNot sure its my favorite, but it has to be near the top for summer driving. "Moving In Stereo" is pretty downtempo for a summer vibe, but maybe Rapchat is thinking more in the top-down-cruise-at-sunset vein. Submitted by: Rapchat Ventura Highway - Immaculate summer vibes and alligator lizards in the air is one of the greatest lines in any song ever I'll be honest here, I don't know that I've ever heard an America track besides "A Horse With No Name." Submitted by: AlligatorLizard Isn't Joe Satriani's Summer Song the only correct answer??? As a former Ibanez player, I'm legally mandated to listen to this track all the way through in the course of writing this AOTD. They make you sign a contract when you buy the guitar. Submitted by: Smricha2 Life is a Highway by Tom Cochran. Was on a family road trip as a kid and heard it all the time it seemed like when the song came out. With how overplayed "Life Is A Highway" is, I'm genuinely shocked it only came out in 1991. I thought it had another couple decades on it. Submitted by: Max Alfa 4C So many to choose from, but one of my long-standing favorites is "Interstate Love Song" by Stone Temple a wonderfully simple and calm guitar riff overlayed with silky smooth (and very singable) vocals make it a perfect soundtrack for a good was originally written to be a bossa-nova type song. It got changed a good bit throughout the writing process, but still kept a lot of that relaxed sound characteristic of bossa nova. Now this one's a throwback for me personally, as one of my dad's go-to guitar songs when I was a kid. Submitted by: Stubb063 During the summer day?Probably something normal like ride of the valkyries (classical music) or leave it on some local music stationAt night? Definitely something in the synthwave genre originally from before my time lol... newer artists like carpenter brut and kavinsky has some solid hits, and gunship and etc... definitely had more than a few nights cruising/speeding around to this before. I'm sorry, something normal like "Ride Of The Valkyries"? I'm all in on the synthwave, but Richard Wagner is normal casual listening for you? Submitted by: Killerhurtalot Tonight I feel ambitious and so does my foot as it sinks on the pedal, I press it to the floor.I don't need a girl, don't need a friend, cuz my friend lonesome's unconditional we're flying forever boredFor a moment I love everything I see and think and feel I love my broke side view mirrorCuz it's so perfect, I'm so perfect, you're so perfect, you're not hereI hear the change is gearMy pile shakes as I hit 80 on the open road. This is an open road - Open Road Song is up there among the best. Max from Eve 5 follows me on Bluesky and I'll be sure to tell him our commenters are singing his praises. Submitted by: potbellyjoe It's not summer yet, and I had absolutely no summer last year, so I have to pull if from my memory of the summer 2023. And that year, it was $20 and Not Strong Enough by boygenius. They are so fantastic Personally, I'm a big fan of having a motorcycle in your front lawn. More people should listen to boygenius, I think. Both as music and as advice-givers. Submitted by: J.B.2.1. Foghat - Slow Ride. Gotta love the riff, take it easy, take it sleazy. Ah, memories of Guitar Hero 3. I remember being able to fully walk out of the room with a wireless guitar controller, playing on Hard, and not fail song. Good times. Submitted by: dolor Last year was Not like us and Houdini by Eminem. Let's see what the summer has to show us! SAY DRAKE. Submitted by: Noturbestfriend Want more like this? These Cars Have The Best Wings Ever
Cars are meant to be fun, and one of the most fun things a car can have is a massive spoiler or wing slapped on its rear end. I know they're sort of silly, but our world — as it is — is such a bleak and depressing place. Don't you think adding a bit of silly whimsy to it would be beneficial for everyone? I do, and that's what led me to my question from last week. I wanted to know what car you thought had the best rear wing of all time, and boy, did you folks deliver. We've got cars that run the entire automotive spectrum on here, and more importantly, we've got wings that run the usefulness spectrum. That's what it's all about, baby. On one end, we've got front-wheel-drive cars with rear wings that do nothing. On the other, we've got super advanced deployable spoilers that provide meaningful downforce to serious supercars. Of course, we've even got the most useless wing of all, but you'll have to scroll through to see what I'm talking about. Anyway, that's enough out of me. Head on down below and check out what your fellow Jalops think the best rear wings of all time are. Read more: These Are The Dumbest Looking Cars Of All Time, According To You Merkur XR4Ti. A factory double decker wing in the late '80's was kinda crazy. From a styling perspective, the wing made the car stand out and drove sales of this relatively obscure re-badged Ford Sierra, (which was ironically only sold at Lincoln Mercury dealers here in the U.S.) I'm sure the LM dealers weren't exactly sure what to make of it, but Bob Lutz wanted a cool import for Mercury and he made it happen, well, at least for 3 years. I remember wanting one. Submitted by: Factoryhack Porsche Panamera! I mean that's a wing that could release 20 years from now and still be seen as modern. Submitted by: Ismail The Veyron. It looks great and it's not only functional, it's dual-purpose functional. Provides downforce at high speeds and works as an air brake to help slow the car down from the aforementioned high speeds. Submitted by: Bossrday '97-'99 Mitsubishi Eclipse GST/GSX Submitted by: smricha2 Mitsubishi Evo VIII. It came with a FULL carbon wing. The wing element was unpainted, but if you sanded down the sides, it showed a beautiful weave underneath as well. In Japan, their MR version came with it unpainted showing it's full 1x1 glory. Submitted by: RenFoto The version on the 95-97 Lotus Esprit. So swoopy. Submitted by: Ed F40 and it isn't close Submitted by: ThatDon I'm personally in camp that either no wing or if it's actual supercar then it's all the wings. Also as nordic person I kinda shy away from showing weath, especially if it's not earned. If I ever would get really really really rich from some own enterprice (don't have any), I would get Murchielago SV in orange. That's top lambo and wing right there. Othervise it's no wing for me. Submitted by: Matti Sillanpää Volvo 850 T5R wagon roof spoiler. Proportionate, fits well, and come on, its on one of the coolest car ever! Submitted by: towman Porsche 911 whale tail, of course! Now the worst is undoubtedly the wing on the 3rd gen Taurus SHO that Car and Driver described as looking like a skateboard clinging embarrassedly to the trunk lid. Submitted by: Stillnotatony I'll say it... the first generation Audi TT. Is it the biggest, baddest wing? No, but it was an after-thought that stopped the entire car from going airborne at speed. When you build a car that's shaped like an airplane wing, it will lift off the ground just like an airplane. Apparently Audi learned the hard way after the car was released to the general public. Viper ACR has to be somewhere on this list. Doubles as a bed, a picnic table, and whatever else you need to use it for. At 1776mm wide, it's also a fun nod to the US. Submitted by: MoparMap E30 M3. Since it was a homologation car, the rules for the racing series would only allow the spoiler to be a certain height from the trunk. They wanted it higher, so they raised the trunk lid on the production car. Submitted by: Ian Best wing of all time? Easily the 1969 Dodge Daytona/1970 Plymouth Superbird. Submitted by: HemiWagon Countach, and I don't care if it was useless! Submitted by: BunkyTheMelon Want more like this? These Are The Cars You'd Buy If They Were $20,000 Cheaper
It's hard to find truly cheap cars these days, especially with the average vehicle transaction price being somewhere in the mid-$40,000 range. It makes us skip out on cars we'd otherwise buy if the circumstances were different. Well, let's say the circumstances were actually different. That's what led me to the question I posed to you all last week. I wanted to know what car you'd buy if it was $20,000 cheaper. What car is just too far out of reach right now, but if there was $20,000 on the hood you'd pull the trigger? I got a hell of a lot of great answers from you folks. There's everything from expensive sports cars that come back down into a more reasonable price range, to econoboxes that were so cheap to begin with that you'd be getting a new car pretty much for free. Hell, in some cases, like the Nissan Versa, you'd be making money if you took one off a dealer's hands. That doesn't sound too shabby to me — I'll tell you that much. Regardless, that's enough yapping out of me. Why don't you head on down below and check out the cars your fellow Jalops would buy if they just so happened to be $20,000 cheaper? Read more: Apparently It's Illegal To Put A 'For Sale' Sign In Your Truck Now The base price for a new one is supposed to be about $85k, but most of the in-stock ones (only looked at the manual ones) are right around $111k with useless options. I'd risk a divorce if they have a new one for $65k with a manual trans. I also echo others' choices of the 5N and GR Corolla. Submitted by: DLBedford A question I can answer as I did this last summer. I wouldn't have considered the Kia EV6 GT at the sticker of $62k plus... but picked one up that was a year old with 13,000 miles... for $37k. Submitted by: KCyclone I've been burned by Chevy multiple times and have the scars to prove it. I generally can't imagine ever getting a new GM product of any sort. However, $20k off the starting MSRP of $22k would make it really hard to say no to. Submitted by: hoser68 Not even $20k, but if the CTR was $35k ot would be awesome. But then again, it's a limited run car and just being cheaper will raise demand and dealers will just add bigger markups on them and they will still be $48-55k. Submitted by: Ricky Spanish Ioniq 5 N.. With $7500 off for leasing, add an additional @20k off the top, plus any state incentives. $40500 Car... Yes, please. Submitted by: Stack 43k for it seems wild considering grandmas corolla interior but 23k would be just the right price to justify it Submitted by: Ztmill02 Hey, we don't have to imagine! Just wait for all these tariffs to magically improve our spending power. Submitted by: 007 Guest With an $18k MSRP they'd literally be paying me to take it. Submitted by: David Flores As a Model 3 LR owner looking to replace it... Lucid Air Pure. I have put more than 150k miles on my Model 3 in almost 3 years of ownership. I use it for commuting, road trips and everything in between. Something roomier, quieter, and with more than 300mi of range checks all the boxes for a Tesla replacement. Submitted by: soloyosh The BMW Z4 M40i, It's a $75k car with the right equipment, $55k feels better. Submitted by: potbelljoe Put me down for either the Civic Si or GTI; those are supposed to be cheap thrills-everyman-pocket-rockets, not high-buck machines. Yeah, they're around $30-$35k, but c'mon, no one can justify spending that much on a Honda or Volkswagen. Submitted by: Omar Carrothers If the IS500 was $20,000 cheaper i'm pretty sure it would be the best selling sedan on the market lol. A 472hp 5.0 liter N/A V8 for $40k??? Who wouldn't want one. Submitted by: RC350F This is probably not the answer Andy is looking for, my one of my fellow BCA members is selling his gorgeous Emerald Green over black '67 Riviera. Original asking price was $45k, however the price recently dropped to $38K. I think i can do enough mental gymnastics to can justify spending $18K for a 60 year old toy, although I'd be eating Ramen noodles everyday for the next three years. Submitted by: Earthbound Misfit I 2024 Ford Maverick XLT hybrid. They are still out there due to a recall hold and going for around $25k. Pickup truck with a functional bed you can still drive around the city and not worry about space to park, 38 mpg, comfortable drive, would look nice in my own garage next to my Maverick lol. $5k price I would take that deal for a new vehicle. Submitted by: Slashsnake At $72,000CAD it's a good value, just out of my price range. But, knock that down to $52,000CAD and I'd be in one tomorrow. I'd even spring for the Rally if it dropped to $57,000CAD Submitted by: JohnnyWasASchoolBoy Probably this.... I love the way it looks, but it's pushing $90K, so I'm not even sure $20K off would do the trick... Lexus GX 550 Overtrail. This is a 2024 at my locale dealer for $89,750 Submitted by: Jimboy Juinio hits me in all the right places nostalgia-wise but I can't see myself spending $75k on a Volkswagen Submitted by: Kars Ericson Want more like this?
