Former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday urged the Government of India to take a compassionate view of deteriorating health of banned Jama'at e Islami chief Dr Hamid Fayaz , who is lodged in jail. Mufti, stated that his family has been plunged into anguish as distressing reports emerge from the central jail in Srinagar regarding his deteriorating health. 'His condition is critical and he urgently requires surgery. Even behind bars a person does not cease to be a human being nor does the State's responsibility end at the prison gates,' said Mufti adding, 'It is a moral and constitutional duty to ensure the well being of every citizen, especially those in custody and awaiting trial." She appealed to the Government of India to take a compassionate and humane view of Dr. Hamid Fayaz's condition. 'Frequent news regarding their serious health issues, suggests that the condition of the Kashmiri political prisoners in jails is very worrying,' said Mirwaiz adding, 'Prisoners are also humans who have the right to life and to medical care. Mirwaiz made an earnest appeal to the concerned authorities to intervene and ensure that Dr Fayaz gets immediate and adequate medical treatment. 'This is his basic right,' said Mirwaiz.
