Jelly Roll Lands A New Bestseller With Some Help From ‘American Idol'

Jelly Roll's 'Unpretty' debuts in the top 10 after American Idol duet with winner Jamal Roberts ... More while fellow single "Liar" also soars. CLEVELAND, OHIO - AUGUST 3: Jelly Roll performs during WWE SummerSlam 2024 at Cleveland Browns Stadium on August 3, 2024 in Cleveland, Ohio. (Photo) Jelly Roll's latest album Beautifully Broken has already spent months on the Billboard charts, and fans are still heavily consuming the country and rock project. The full-length earns a bit of a boost this week after the multi-genre singer-songwriter appeared on American Idol and dueted with Jamal Roberts, who went on to win the twenty-third iteration of the reality staple. The two musicians delivered collaborative renditions of two of Jelly Roll's tracks from his latest release, and thanks to that high-profile performance, one of the featured tunes has become yet another top 10 hit for the Grammy-nominated superstar. 'Unpretty' launches on a pair of Billboard rankings this frame. The track, taken from Beautifully Broken but which has not yet been pushed as a proper single, debuts at No. 8 on the Rock Digital Song Sales chart. That new placement gives Jelly Roll his fourteenth career top 10 showing on that list. The same cut has been classified by Billboard as both rock and country, qualifying it for not only the Rock Digital Song Sales chart, but also the Country Digital Song Sales tally. That second list is a bit more competitive this time around, so Jelly settles for launching the track at No. 12, collecting his twenty-third career appearance in the process. In both instances, 'Unpretty' earns the third-highest debut on the two charts. On the rock side, Jelly lands behind 'God Is a Weapon' by Falling in Reverse and Marilyn Manson (No. 4) and 'Let You Fade' by Linkin Park (No. 6). Over on the country list, American Idol season 23 runner-up John Foster debuts in second place with 'Tell That Angel I Love Her,' while 'What I Want' by Morgan Wallen and Tate McRae kicks off its run at No. 10. Jelly Roll and Roberts paired 'Unpretty' with 'Liar,' which was released last summer as a single from Beautifully Broken. That track rejoins the Country Digital Song Sales tally at No. 3 and rises to the runner-up spot on the rock-only list. Sales of 'Unpretty' grew by more than 1,800% from one week to the next, according to Luminate, and that gain is tied directly to American Idol. Purchases of 'Liar,' while greater, increased by just under 200% during the same timeframe.

‘American Idol' Jamal Roberts Winner Hits No. 1 On The Billboard Charts

It was just a few days ago that Season 23 of American Idol finished, with Jamal Roberts being named the winner of the latest edition of the reality TV staple. Following his crowning, the talented singer soared to the top of the iTunes rankings in the U.S. with his winner's single, 'Heal.' That track gives him a huge hit on the Billboard charts this week — the kind he's never seen before — and it brings with it one of his older recordings as well. The American Idol champion debuts on four Billboard rankings this frame in the U.S. "Heal" opens at No. 1 on half of them, as it starts atop both the Hot Gospel Songs and Gospel Digital Song Sales tallies. These mark the singer's first leaders on any chart in the country. "Heal" performs well largely thanks to a healthy opening sales sum. According to Luminate, Roberts sold a little under 8,800 copies of his breakout tune in the past tracking period. That's enough for "Heal" to also launch at No. 2 on the Digital Song Sales chart. This time around, it's beaten only by "Don't Say You Love Me" by BTS singer Jin. The tune also manages to enter the Gospel Streaming Songs list inside the top 10. The track opens at No. 7 on that roster, earning him his first top 10 on the streaming-only tally – but it still marks Roberts's lowest placement on the roster. Years before he made it big on American Idol, Roberts released a gospel track titled "He's Preparing Me." That tune becomes a hit as well following the immediate success of "Heal," which is itself a cover of a song by musician Tom Odell. "He's Preparing Me" opens at No. 4 on the Gospel Digital Song Sales chart, coming in just a few spots behind his new No. 1.

Carrie Underwood Under Fire Over Her Reaction To The New 'American Idol' Winner As Fans Call For Her Removal

Carrie Underwood is facing heavy backlash online after "American Idol" viewers perceived her reaction to singer Jamal Roberts' victory in the show as less than enthusiastic. Although the country music superstar has since shared a personal post congratulating Roberts on his win, netizens claim she is only doing "damage control" after being called out. Carrie Underwood has since returned home and revealed that her farm welcomed a new baby lamb on the same day the "American Idol" finale aired. "American Idol" fans criticized Underwood for what they perceived as her "unhappy" expression after Jamal Roberts was crowned season 23 winner. The show wrapped up on Sunday, May 18, with finalists Breanna Nix, John Foster, and Roberts performing alongside Season 23 mentor Jelly Roll, Jessica Simpson, Salt-N-Pepa, Goo Goo Dolls, Josh Groban, and Patti LaBelle. After a three-hour entertaining showdown, 27-year-old Roberts, who hails from Meridian, Mississippi, and works as an elementary school teacher, was crowned champion and was greeted with a standing ovation by all three judges, Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and Underwood. However, when Roberts started performing Anthony Hamilton's "Her Heart" as his final song, Underwood was seen sitting back while the other judges remained standing. The country singer seemingly barely acknowledged Roberts when she and the other judges got on stage to celebrate his win, which also raised eyebrows. The "Before He Cheats" singer's perceived lack of excitement quickly drew the ire of many viewers, who took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their disappointment. One person wrote, "She was just nasty, biased, and unmoved the ENTIRE season. Of course, you root for your fave(s) internally. But her outright displays were atrocious. Her disdain was so obvious. I hope she is NOT there ever again!" Another noted called the singer out for saying Roberts lacked "stage presence." They said," 'He lacked stage presence?!?' So did she on her season. Why is she acting like she doesn't know what it's like to be a contestant on this show?" One fan mocked Underwood, claiming she "wanted country boy to win," while another said they "see right through her bullsh-t." Amid the backlash, Underwood put up a post, congratulating Roberts for coming out victorious in the singing competition. She wrote, "Congratulations to the newest winner of @AmericanIdol!!! I'm so proud of Jamal Roberts and all he has accomplished this season, and I can't wait to see what mountains he climbs next! He's going to do great things!" Underwood's message of support for Roberts didn't seem to calm things down, with several still slamming the singer. A viral post with over 10 million views and 57k likes read, "This was so forced and you posted it for damage control. America caught on, FYI. Don't bring her back @AmericanIdol." However, amid the criticisms, other fans came to Underwood's defense and commended the 42-year-old singer for a job well done on the show. Someone wrote, "Now all of the Carrie haters can stop crying, saying she didn't like Jamal. Y'all can stop crying now. She loves him and said congratulations to him. Y'all just jealous of Carrie point blank." Following Roberts' emergence as the show's winner and the backlash that has trailed Underwood since the season wrapped up, several fans are now in doubt about her reprising her role as a judge. However, Showrunner and executive producer Megan Michaels Wolflick addressed the show's future in an interview with TVLine, where she praised Underwood. Wolflick said Underwood "really had to carve out her own role," and was "stepping into the shoes of a former judge," but needed to be "her own person, and she definitely did that." "I think she brought a nostalgia factor, and I also like that she brought a little criticism and constructive feedback, which is very much needed," she continued. "She knows back in her day how hard she was pushed every week to become the best. So I think she's brought a lot to the show, and I hope people love it." Although Underwood and the other judges haven't addressed their future on the show, Wolflick seemingly suggested that things are going well with them and they may likely reprise their role on it. "It's early days still, but I love our panel. I think we're in a good place. I'm excited for them to crown their first winner together as a threesome. They're all passionate about the show," she added. Underwood has since returned home and was welcomed with good news by her family. The singer lives in Tennessee with her husband, Mike Fisher, whom she married in 2010, and their two sons, Isaiah Michael and Jacob Bryan. She took to Instagram earlier this week to share that she welcomed a baby lamb to her family as she shared a sweet selfie with the lamb, and a video of him being fed by his mother. "Surprise! We've got another new life around the farm!" Underwood wrote in her caption, before revealing: "This little guy happened to be born on the day of the @americanidol finale, so we figured it would only be right if we named him Jamal!!!" referring to season 23 winner Roberts. "Mama and Baby J are doing well… and I'm popping by the barn to get snuggles every chance I get! Welcome to the world, little dude!" she added.

Jamal Roberts: 5 Fun Facts About The 'American Idol' Season 23 Winner

Each year, the influential show 'American Idol' airs a new season that hooks thousands of people worldwide to allow the residents of the American people to express their talent and have a chance to become the season's 'American Idol' to push their music career. With the season's finale, the audience's votes decide the fates of the three talented singers. It was finally announced on Sunday, 18th May, that with the breaking world record of 26 million votes cast into the event, the 23rd Season's 'American Idol' is Jamal Roberts. Here are 5 fun facts to get to know him better: 1. His rendition of Tom Odell's 'Heal' hit #1 on iTunes Jamal Roberts's final performance was a reinterpretation of Tom Odell's song 'Heal', with modified lyrics that created a deeply emotional piece, moving much of the audience to tears. The contestant was mentored by a previous winner on 'American Idol', Fantasia Barrino – she was personally moved by the performance, stating that Jamal 'Loses himself in the music'. Following the performance, the cover was released on Saturday (17th May) on multiple streaming apps such as Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. As of Tuesday (20th May), it has hit #1 on iTunes. 2. He began his career as a gospel singer in a church With a Christian background, it's no surprise that the start of his musical career began in his local church at the early age of two years old. Jamal's grandparents recognised innate talent and encouraged him to pursue his musical career. Having his paternal grandfather serve as a bishop and his grandmother a deacon, it solidified his faith-centred environment. With their support, it gave him the push to perform gospel music in the churches of Meridian, initially as the role of a drummer and later on as a vocalist in church choirs while also serving as an usher. With this background in gospel, it cemented the vocal abilities and musical style he has. 3. He's a physical education teacher When Jamal attended St. Mary's High School in St. Louis, Missouri, he ran track and was a standout athlete in both field and football, where he held the position of linebacker and running back. Because of his performance on the field, he gained the recognition of the University of Missouri. Later in life, he became a physical education teacher at Crestwood Elementary in Meridian, Mississippi. When he was performing on 'American Idol,' many of the staff and students of the elementary school attended the event and supported their teacher. Based on recent statements, even after winning the season, he continues to have a passion to teach. 4. He is a loving father to 3 daughters Jamal Roberts' profound devotion to his faith is well-known, yet it is the boundless love he holds for his three daughters that drew the attention of the audience. He often describes them as his greatest motivation and his 'world'. During the live Top 8 episode of 'American Idol', Jamal joyfully announced the birth of his third daughter, Gianna Grace. His other two daughters, Harmoni and Lyrik, have frequently been seen supporting their father, making appearances on his Instagram page. In a candid interview, Jamal shared that he had always intended to name his children after musical terms. He mentioned that if he were to have another daughter, he would name her 'Melody' or 'Symphony', continuing the tradition of musical names within his family. 5. He is the first Black man to win 'American Idol' after 22 years With the conclusion of the second season of 'American Idol', Ruben Studdard made history in 2003 as the first Black man to win the show. Now, 22 years later, Jamal Roberts has come up as the first to follow in his footsteps. This achievement marks a significant milestone in the show's history, especially considering that the other four African-American winners have been women, with the first woman being Fantasia Barrino back in the third season in 2004.
