"Modi govt and MP govt working keeping in view legacy of veeraanganas...": MP CM Mohan Yadav

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) [India], May 31 (ANI): After Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Madhya Pradesh's capital Bhopal, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said that the central government and the state government are working keeping in view the legacy of the veeranganas (queens). PM Modi arrived here in Bhopal to attend the 'Mahila Sashaktikaran Mahasammelan' program on Saturday, the 300th birthday of Devi Ahilyabai Holkar. The Prime Minister also virtually inaugurated the Indore metro and the newly constructed Datia and Satna airports through a single click from the event at the Jamboree ground in the capital city. Additionally, he laid the foundation stone for various development projects in the state and released the 'Commemorative Coin and Stamp' in honour of Lokmata Ahilyabai Holkar's 300th birthday. After the program, CM Yadav told reporters, 'Today, PM Modi talked about the developments and work being done for women by the central government and the Madhya Pradesh government. He inaugurated Indore metro, two airports (Datia and Satna) and appreciated the efforts for women empowerment. The Modi government and our state government are working keeping in view the legacy of veeraanganas and talking about them by connecting with the present time is something through which we can improve the lives of our sisters.' He further said, 'Regarding Operation Sindoor, Prime Minister Modi has already said that 'goli ka jawab gole se diya jaayega'. It is also the strategy of our changing times, will power, the valour of our Army, good leadership and today's situation. Now, the world is getting acquainted with the terror incident that India has faced in the past. The world agrees that if there is any obstacle in India's progress, then the terrorists are sent from neighbouring countries.' PM Modi remembered all the brave veeranganas, including Rani Durgawati and Devi Ahilyabai and explained the importance of women empowerment for India. Additionally, he also introduced everyone about the changing policies of India in the changing times, the CM added. Speaking to ANI, Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla said that PM Modi's speech instilled tremendous enthusiasm in the entire audience present on the occasion. 'Today, PM Narendra Modi's speech about women empowerment, Ahilyabai's resolution of justice and good governance, and the strong will to end terrorism like Naxalism, instilled tremendous enthusiasm in the entire audience. A woman with self-respect can keep the nation at ultimate glory for a long time. Devi Ahilyabai always worked in this direction and PM Modi is also working on the same line. He warned Pakistan that if a bullet is fired on our citizen, then we will not be behind to retaliate,' Shukla said. Meanwhile, BJP state chief VD Sharma said that the prime minister gave a great message about women's power during the women's empowerment convention program in the capital city. 'PM Narendra Modi gave a great message about 'Naari Shakti' in the Mahasammelan of women empowerment today... Pakistan was clearly told that bullets would be answered with shells. This is the new India, this is the India of the Prime Minister. He has given a strong message in today's program here,' Sharma told ANI. Additionally, Madhya Pradesh Minister Prahlad Singh Patel said that Prime Minister Modi began working on women's empowerment in 2014 and that women's empowerment is behind every scheme of his government. 'This day is dedicated to Devi Ahilyabai Holkar; her fame and her glory. When we recall history, the work done by Lokmata Ahilyabai for women's empowerment in the 18th century, why can it not be done today? But I say with great pride that PM Modi started the work of women's empowerment from 2014. Women empowerment is behind every scheme of his, the country will have to accept this,' Patel said. Furthermore, Minister Narendra Shivaji Patel said that it was a historic programme held here in the capital city and claimed that, like Ahilyabai Holkar, PM Modi is establishing a similar state. 'When PM Narendra Modi speaks, enthusiasm, excitement, and energy are generated in the country. At today's historic event, two lakh women from Madhya Pradesh participated. PM Modi talked about Operation Sindoor and said that Sindoor symbolises our valour, motivating the whole crowd of women. Under the leadership of PM Modi, the country is developing quickly in all like the state established by Ahilyabai Holkar, a similar state is being established today under PM Modi's leadership,' Patel said. A lavish new Patsy Cline box set captures the trajectory of her career

In the late '50s, 'Don Owens's TV Jamboree' was a must-see every Saturday for country music fans across the Washington metro area. A promoter and DJ with a carnival-barker's zeal, Owens was known to kick off his radio program with a pistol shot, and he ran his TV show in the same freewheeling style. Broadcast from the Raleigh Hotel at 12th Street NW and Pennsylvania Avenue, the Jamboree was high-octane entertainment for the have-nots, many of whom wouldn't have felt welcome in the lobby. Owens honored the music but also celebrated its backwoods roots with cornball humor. He often included his dog, a classical-music-loving mutt that yapped on cue at the fiddle-and-banjo racket.

Audit finds Jamboree chaos fueled by false reporting, insufficient preparation

A year and a half after launching an investigation into the chaotic collapse of the 2023 Saemangeum World Scout Jamboree, South Korea's state auditor concluded that false reporting by the organizing committee and a supporting ministry significantly contributed to the event's failure. In a report released Thursday, the Board of Audit and Inspection of Korea concluded that misleading updates from both the Jamboree organizing committee and the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family — the primary supervisory agency — hampered the government's ability to step in and implement urgent corrective actions. The international event, held in August 2023, was plagued by poor preparations and substandard operations. Participants from dozens of countries were met with severe heat, inadequate shelter and sanitation, and flooded camping grounds. These conditions forced several delegations to withdraw early, drawing international criticism. According to the audit, the organizing committee was led by a former MOGEF official lacking relevant expertise. Just 10 out of its 159 staff had experience with global events. The committee was found to have falsely reported the completion of infrastructure to the ministry, despite significant deficiencies in basic amenities, including toilets and medical facilities. Instead of correcting the course, the ministry compounded the problem. Then-Minister Kim Hyun-sook allegedly received reports indicating missing shower and toilet installations and personally observed unprepared medical and administrative stations — yet went on to claim that all necessary facilities had been installed. The BAI stated that this misleading briefing to the Cabinet eliminated what could have been the government's final opportunity to implement corrective action before the event began. The audit also noted that none of the core team positions responsible for the Jamboree were filled with MOGEF officials, relying instead on staff seconded from local governments.

New Huntington Beach complex offers comfort for formerly homeless seniors

Janet Di Pietro used to spend a lot of time in the parking lot of the International House of Pancakes in Costa Mesa. Di Pietro's plan had nothing to do with breakfast, and everything to do with survival. With people not taking vacations, her business as an in-home pet sitter fell apart soon after the coronavirus pandemic began. She went from couch surfing at friends' houses to sleeping in that IHOP parking lot in her truck. She had suddenly become homeless. 'The city of Costa Mesa kept tapping on my window,' Di Pietro said. 'They said, 'If we catch you here one more time, we're going to impound your vehicle and possibly take your dog to the animal shelter.' That's when I realized I needed to ask for help.' After staying for more than three years at Yale Navigation Center in Santa Ana, Di Pietro, 64, finally has a place she can call home. She's one of the residents at the new Pelican Harbor senior apartments in Huntington Beach, which held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 20. The 42-unit complex, set on an L-shaped lot near the 5 Points intersection of Beach Boulevard and Main Street, is for low-income and formerly homeless seniors who are at least 62 years old. It's a joint venture of Irvine-based Jamboree Housing Corporation and USA Properties Fund, in partnership with the city of Huntington Beach and County of Orange. 'Many seniors we serve have endured a lifetime of hardship, often without the support others may take for granted,' Jamboree President/CEO Laura Archuleta said. 'Pelican Harbor is more than just housing. Delivering high-quality housing and services means giving them safety, dignity and opportunity to thrive.' The four-story complex features all one-bedroom apartments and surrounds a 4,000-square-foot community space. There's also a 2,300-square-foot outdoor courtyard and pet park, which is good news for Di Pietro's Chihuahua. Pelican Harbor reserves 33 permanent supportive housing apartments for seniors experiencing homelessness, Jamboree spokeswoman Marissa Felicano said, with the other nine for low-income seniors. Residents earn 30-50% of the area median income — between $33,150 and $55,250 annually — and will pay no more than 30% of that income toward rent. Rent at 33 of the apartments will be subsidized using Project-Based Vouchers, secured by the county through the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development. The $39.2-million facility, which had its groundbreaking in 2022, was funded by both public and private partners. Huntington Beach contributed $2.8 million in HOME funds provided through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, as well as $300,000 of city inclusionary funds. Among the other funding sources, which included millions of dollars in loans, Jamboree and the County of Orange secured $5.8 million in No Place Like Home funding from the California Department of Housing and Community Development. The Orange County Health Care Agency brought in $3.6 million in Mental Health Services Act funding for seniors receiving supportive services at Pelican Harbor. Barry Kielsmeier, chairman of Beach Cities Interfaith Services, said his organization funded the $1,000 security deposit for each of the apartments. 'We believe in helping people pull themselves up by their bootstraps, but there are times that people don't have any bootstraps,' Kielsmeier said. 'We wanted to take that last speed bump and make sure those folks had a place to live, and that they were not going to remain homeless because they couldn't come up with a security deposit. Sometimes as little as $1,000, having a debt or something like that, can keep people on the street. It's insane, but that's the reality we live with.' Thirty-three of the 43 apartments will be supported by Project-Based Vouchers from the County of Orange, through the U.S. Department of Housing and Development. Di Pietro is certainly grateful, even as she has dealt with cancer along with her homelessness in recent years. She said she was diagnosed with terminal Stage 2 ovarian cancer in 2020, and has undergone 70 chemotherapy treatments through Hoag. She was originally projected to have five years to live after her diagnosis, but she'll pass that mark in May when she turns 65, she said. Di Pietro spoke at last week's ribbon-cutting ceremony. She said her new apartment will extend her life and give her back a sense of normalcy. 'With chemo, you get free haircuts, but if I had hair I could let my hair down,' she said. 'It's been the most wonderful experience.' Part of her mission now is to speak out about some misconceptions about homelessness. 'The more I can give my story and how I fell from grace, I hope to make it more real for all of those people out there,' Di Pietro said. 'So when they see us on the street, they don't look away. There's a lot of good, there's a lot of bad in being homeless. While I'm here, I want to try and put a ding in that stigma. We're not all criminals, we're not all bad people. We've just fallen from grace, but I'm going to keep going. 'I want to scream from the tallest mountain, 'Just give us a chance!''
