Why does Syria matter to Israel and Turkiye?

Israel and Turkiye have been holding closed-door meetings in Azerbaijan to work out ways to avoid direct conflict in Syria. Both have a military presence there, and both accuse the other of threatening regional security. Israel has carried out hundreds of air strikes on Syria since Bashar al-Assad was toppled in December, destroying military infrastructure and hardware. Turkiye says these attacks and Israel's expansion into the occupied Golan Heights are further destabilising the country, as the new government tries to rebuild. For its part, Israel has accused Ankara of trying to turn Syria into a Turkish protectorate. So, what are the two sides trying to achieve? And can they avoid coming to blows over Syria? Can Europeans alone change the course of Russia's war in Ukraine?

European defence ministers from the so-called 'coalition of the willing' have been meeting in Brussels to discuss boosting military support for Ukraine. Some countries are considering the possible deployment of peacekeepers if a ceasefire is agreed. The talks are part of a renewed push by Europe to arm Ukraine against Russia's invasion, after the US made military support a condition of Kyiv's participation in peace talks. Meanwhile, the EU's latest effort to rally funding for Ukraine has only exposed disunity in the bloc. So, does Europe have the means and the will to keep Ukraine in the fight, as Washington looks for a way out? Presenter: James Bays Guests: Pieter Cleppe – Editor-in-chief of Marina Miron – Researcher in the War Studies Department of King's College London Anatol Lieven – Director of the Eurasia Program at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft

Pakistan's mass deportation of Afghans is part of a nationwide crackdown to expel foreigners – whether they are living there legally or illegally. The government says it all boils down to its national security. Tensions have surged between the neighbours since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in 2021. Rights groups say deporting refugees will make a dire humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan even worse. What kind of future awaits them? What's the fallout of the US security breach?

'Damage control' is how many are describing the Trump administration's handling of a leak of highly sensitive information. Eighteen senior officials – including the CIA director, the defence secretary, the national security adviser and the vice president – were part of an online group chat that's gone viral. An American journalist was also on that chat, and was made privy to US plans to strike Houthi positions in Yemen – before they happened. The breach is raising questions about the handling of military intelligence and top-secret information. So, will there be consequences beyond Washington? And how will longtime allies in Europe respond to being criticised in the chat? Presenter: James Bays Guests: Glenn Carle – US national security specialist and former CIA officer Jamie Gaskarth – Professor of foreign policy and international relations at Open University PJ Crowley – Former US assistant secretary of state and senior director on the National Security Council
