Inside the dreamy East Lothian seaside home on the market for offers over £1,550,000

If The Stables were a horse, it'd be a glossy thoroughbred. This lovely slate-roofed property is situated at the Marine Hotel end of North Berwick, and, as its name suggests, is a converted B-listed former stable block. Among other things, there are five bedrooms, three living rooms, three bathrooms, a games room, 0.75 acres, and a self-contained studio across two levels, and it's yours for offers over £1,550,000 via estate agent Rettie. We asked the current owner, Emma Govan, to tell us more. Why are you moving on and how long have you been at the property? We bought The Stables just under seven years ago with a view to bringing this beautiful home back to life, as it was a little tired and unloved. Now that we have finished, it feels like the right time to pass it on to the next owners to enjoy while we move to our next project. We believe you are only ever the custodian of a property like this and my husband likes to quote the All Blacks who endeavour to leave the jersey in a better place. I like to think we have done that here. Tell us about the building's history The property was the stable block for Carlekemp Mansion House. It was built in 1898 for James Craig - a paper manufacturer - as his holiday home. The west wing has always been a cottage, hence the postal address Stables Cottage. The kitchen was the Coach House, the principal bedroom was the hayloft and the east wing was the stables and tack room. You can still see the hooks for the hay bales in the attic. Carlekemp was used as a convalescent home during and after WW1 and subsequently was a priory school. I believe the stable block was used as science classrooms at one time. In the Nineties it was converted from three holiday lets to one family home. What have you done to the property since moving in? We have successfully managed holiday rentals from the property while we upgraded the space. Over the years we have worked our way round each room decorating and enhancing them. We had doors commissioned to separate the lounge and games room, replaced a decorative open fire with a Charnwood Aire Woodburning Stove, and installed large custom-made storage cupboards in the hall. We replaced the main family bathroom and also created a practical utility/boot room. Externally we added a fence, upgraded the pathway and installed a patio to give the house a defined entrance way. We simplified the lawns to accommodate a robot lawnmower for ease of maintenance. Finally, we uncovered and restored a hidden raised garden with views out to the sea. Did you install the kitchen, and does it have any interesting features? The kitchen was handmade by Michael Hart Cabinet Makers and it is a testament to his craftmanship that it has stood the test of time. We have maintained and upgraded the space to accommodate an American style fridge freezer, added panelling and replaced the floor. The round island is a great talking point and holds more than you would expect. However, you will always find me next to the four oven gas-fired AGA, this is truly the heart of our home. Any interesting architectural features? The leaded windows and surrounding exposed stonework are my favourite features. The detailed carvings that adorn the main house and the gate house are mirrored here. You will find the initials JC carved above the hayloft below the original weather vane. On an autumn morning the sun shines though the kitchen and catches the Cotswold stone turning it pink and making it sparkle – it is a magical moment. Which are your favourite rooms and why? It is honestly so hard to choose, we have such happy memories in every room of the house. During the day, the kitchen is truly the heart of our home - there are always people coming and going. The studio radiates a stillness and gets the sun in the afternoon. On a winter evening I love curling up in front of the fire in the cosy lounge. Also, the enclosed, sheltered courtyard feels positively Mediterranean on a summer's day. What have been your happiest moments at the property? Bringing our babies home here and all of the birthday parties that followed. Summers spent on the deck sunbathing and watching the children run through the sprinklers. Christmas and New Year round the dining table with friends and the best Burns' Supper this year. Seeing the photographs after the hard work was finished, as we really are proud of what we have achieved. What are the views like? My favourite view is out past Carlekemp House to the sea, the building is truly magnificent and the water is idyllic, it is like going back in time. It is amazing to find such peace and quiet so close to the town. The sunset through the trees is exceptional. What's the area like to live in? We adore living in North Berwick, there is a wonderful welcoming community, a great array of independent shops, restaurants, coffee shops and bakeries. The Stables is ideally located to benefit from the peaceful surrounding while the centre of town and the train station is a comfortable walking distance. A morning walk into town for breakfast at Cake or a coffee at Steampunk; a stroll round the Victorian lodge park with a Bostock pastry; lunch at Herringbone and walking it off on the beach; picking up local produce from Anderson's Butcher and Wilson's Fresh Farm Produce Store; an afternoon play on the beach or golf course finishing up at the Marine Hotel where we can enjoy a glass of wine in the bar and watch the sunset over Fidra and Yellowcraig beach. It is no wonder North Berwick is such a desirable place to live and visit. 3 . Another view of the living room Contributed Photo: Contributed Photo Sales

Former police chief James Craig announces runs for Detroit mayor

The Brief Former police chief James Craig is running for Detroit mayor, he announced today. Craig said he likes the downtown development but wants to help small businesses and neighborhoods. He said if elected, he will use his connection with President Donald Trump to fight for city funding and assistance when needed. DETROIT (FOX 2) - James Craig announced his run for Detroit mayor, from the barber shop Executive Cuts Wednesday morning, vowing to restore the public's trust in city government with a focus on schools, neighborhoods and small businesses. He opened his press conference with a quip that "Hollywood Craig is back" using a nickname some gave him when he was police chief. "Even though I did say I'm Hollywood, great. But it's not about the headlines, but your daily reality," he said. "Whether it's safer streets, better services, or affordable housing. I will always put you first." Craig, 66, served as Detroit police chief for eight years, appointed by Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr amid the city's bankruptcy. Big picture view "Transparency. Accountability. Actions. These are just not promises. They are the foundation for this campaign," he said. "As your former chief, I made a commitment to protect and uplift this city. Now, I want to continue that commitment as your mayor. Together, we will rise together." Craig has made two previous forays into politics, the first attempt for governor was derailed by signature fraud in 2022 resulting in a criminal case against a group hired to gather them. That case is still tied up in the courts but it cost multiple candidates including Craig, their candidacy. In 2023, he briefly announced a run for US Senate but ended the attempt after five months. Craig told the media that he isn't a politician but a public servant, and said what he learned in the gubernatorial run. "When I got into the gubernatorial race, except for the fraud that came into the campaign and, certainly that was a not a good moment," he said. "But, you know, you hire professional to do a job. And part of that job was, they didn't screen out who they had getting signatures. And it hurt not only me, but it hurt other candidates. "I am proud of the fact that throughout that campaign, while I was still running, I was a leading GOP candidate, I consistently led by double digits." He said his senate run was truncated due to health, saying he was recovering from hip surgery and should not have got in the race. "I will tell you, I believe that running for governor and then that short, short stint, pursuing the Senate seat, really prepared me for what we're doing today," Craig said. Craig also served Detroit as deputy mayor during the last year of his time as police chief and credited Duggan for helping rebuild the city coming out of bankruptcy. He said his focus will be to build out from downtown Detroit. "We have got to focus more and enhance what's going on in the neighborhoods," he said. Craig, a registered Republican, was asked if his connection to President Donald Trump, would help or hurt him with Detroit voters. He said that in conversations with residents, they have told him that the letter after his name isn't as important as his deeds and actions. "I have a relationship, it's important that any mayor in America has a direct link to the White House. I tell you, I will have that connection and I will use that connection," he said. "I'm authentic. I've lived by being authentic for my entire public career. Everybody knows I'm a Republican. "I am first a Detroiter. I was born and raised in this city. This matters to me. And yes, when I'm mayor, I will reach out and touch Washington for much-needed financial help." Dig deeper He joins a large group of potential candidates including City Council President Mary Sheffield, councilman Fred Durhal III, CEO of THAW Saunteel Jenkins, Solomon Kinloch – Senior pastor, Triumph Church, businessmen Joel Haashiim and Jonathan Barlow, attorney Todd Perkins and Rogelio Landin, an activist. Current Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan is running for governor of Michigan and leaving the seat open after the end of his third term. Craig's last foray into politics ended just as it was beginning when he ran for governor in 2023 but was one of four candidates defrauded with fake signatures by people hired to gather and submit them. At the time, he was considered the front-runner for the nomination. The alleged signature fraud scheme suspects are still tied up in the courts.

Former Detroit Police Chief James Craig announces run for mayor

Former Detroit Police Chief James Craig is joining a crowded list of candidates running to be the city's next mayor. Craig, who served as the city's police chief from 2013 to 2021, announced his campaign Wednesday at Executive Cuts, a Black-owned barbershop in the city. "Small businesses are the backbone of our city, and they deserve a leader who will prioritize them," said Craig. "Detroit cannot thrive unless every neighborhood thrives. I'm running for mayor to bring strong leadership, economic stability, and real investment into our communities." After stepping down as police chief, Craig announced that he was running for governor in 2022 and quickly became the leading GOP candidate before fraudulent signatures on campaign paperwork ended his campaign. In 2023, Craig announced a run for the open U.S. Senate race in Michigan, but ended his Republican bid just four months later in February 2024. At that time, he told CBS News Detroit dropping out of that race was a "business decision." As part of his mayoral campaign, Craig says he's "promising a mayoral administration rooted in integrity, stability, and economic opportunity for all Detroiters." He joins a growing list of candidates that includes Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield, Councilmember Fred Durhal III, former Councilmember Saunteel Jenkins, the Rev. Solomon Kinloch, attorney Todd Perkins and businessman Joel Haashiim. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan announced earlier this year that he would not seek reelection. Soon after that announcement, he launched an independent bid in Michigan's 2026 gubernatorial race.

Former Detroit Police Department chief, political candidate set to run for mayor

Former Detroit Police Chief James Craig is looking to make a comeback, filing paperwork to run for mayor in this year's election. Craig filed his "Chief James Craig for Mayor" candidate committee Monday, allowing him to collect donations for the August primary. A message was left with Craig's campaign, which has not responded yet. Craig was appointed police chief by Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr after the city filed for bankruptcy. Craig led the department during the 2020 Black Lives Matter demonstrations, when he was scrutinized for excessive force against protesters, who filed a lawsuit against the city and called for his resignation. The city eventually settled for $1 million to resolve the lawsuit, which claimed Detroit Police officers used tear gas, pepper spray, rubber bullets, mass arrests and more without probable cause. Craig also faced scrutiny for the department's use of facial recognition technology, which resulted in two wrongful arrests. Though he counts Project Green Light, the police department's surveillance initiative intended to reduce crime by setting up cameras at participating businesses, as an accomplishment for the city. He served as Detroit's police chief for eight years before retiring in 2021. Craig then pursued a run for governor in 2022 on the Republican ticket, however, state officials knocked him off the ballot after it was discovered his nominating petitions contained fraudulent signatures, leaving him short of the required number to qualify. He unsuccessfully opted to run on a write-in campaign. The city of Detroit mayoral primary is nonpartisan. The former police chief then ran for a U.S. Senate seat in 2024 but suspended his campaign, acknowledging he was eyeing a run for Detroit mayor instead. Joining him in the race, so far, are The Rev. Solomon Kinloch of Triumph Church; City Council President, Mary Sheffield; former City Councilwoman and nonprofit CEO Saunteel Jenkins; Detroit City Councilman Fred Durhal III; attorney Todd Perkins; businessmen Joel Haashiim and Jonathan Barlow; and activist Rogelio Landin.
