Man indicted in brutal rape, kidnapping of elderly woman in Cleveland goes before judge

CLEVELAND (WJW) — A man charged with beating and raping an elderly woman in June 2024 pleaded not guilty on Thursday.
A Cuyahoga County grand jury on Monday, June 2, indicted James E. Collins, 43, of Cleveland, on three counts of rape, two counts of kidnapping and one count of felonious assault in the attack, alleged to have happened near East 79th Street and Rawlings Avenue.

Cleveland police officers assigned to the community engagement unit arrested Collins on May 27 on the city's west side, after receiving multiple tips on his whereabouts.
At his arraignment on Thursday, Collins was handed a $100,000 bond, on the condition he have no contact with the victim. He was also ordered to submit to an HIV test. He's due back in court on June 16, court records show.

Collins is also set for pretrial that day in a separate case, having been indicted in May 2024 on charges of strangulation, endangering children and domestic violence, court records show.
