Angel Cabrera, in contention for a 4th PGA Tour Champions win this year, makes albatross
Angel Cabrera, in contention for a 4th PGA Tour Champions win this year, makes albatross Aces are an anomaly, but most players know there's one result in golf that's even more rare than a hole-in-one: an albatross. It's highly unlikely (the odds are generally accepted as one-in-a-million), but it does happen from time to time when the best players in the world are in action. Angel Cabrera was the latest to make a big bird, with a beautiful shot on the par-5 7th hole at TPC Wisconsin on Friday during the opening round American Family Insurance Open on the PGA Tour Champions. Cabrera won back-to-back majors in 2025 Cabrera, 55, is on an absolute tear in 2025, having amassed three PGA Tour Champions wins in the span of just six weeks earlier this year. He won the James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational in April before taking first in back-to-back events in May at the Regions Tradition and the Senior PGA Championship, respectively. Cabrera could be in line for yet another victory as he and his team-event partner, Ricardo Gonzalez, are firmly in contention at the American Family Insurance Open. The two-time major champion has had a long climb back to the spotlight in the golf world since being released from prison in Argentina in 2023. He spent two years behind bars after he was convicted in separate cases of domestic violence and threats against former partners.

Angel Cabrera, who spent nearly 2 years in prison, on if he deserves to play in Masters: 'Why not?'
Perhaps the biggest storyline coming out of Augusta National Golf Club this week is the inclusion of Angel Cabrera, the 2009 Masters winner who is playing despite multiple convictions for threats and harassment against two of his ex-girlfriends. Cabrera spent almost two years in prison in Brazil and Argentina before being released on parole in August 2023. He was later cleared to play at the PGA Tour Champions events later that year. Cabrera was asked by reporters if he "deserved" to be playing in this year's Masters given his time spent in jail for his crimes. "I won the Masters," Cabrera said, via the New York Post. "Why not?" No matter the age or rank on the world stage, winners of the Masters receive lifetime exemptions to play in the tournament each year, and Cabrera is taking advantage of that. He also attended the annual Champions Dinner on Tuesday night after his practice round. "Life has given me another opportunity," he added. "I've got to take advantage of that and do the right things in this second opportunity. Obviously, I regret things that happened, and you learn from them." Cabrera won his first golf tournament since he was released from prison, picking up the victory at the James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational, which is a PGA Tour Champions event. He shot 11-under par to squeak out a victory over K.J. Choi and Retief Goosen. "Everything I've gone through the last few years, being here, having a chance to win, is very emotional," he said after his win. While there are many calling out Augusta National Golf Club for allowing Cabrera to play, there are some who are excited to see him, like 2013 Masters winner Adam Scott. "It's a happy thing for me. We've got a fairly long history," Scott said about Cabrera on Sunday ahead of Masters week. "I first met him on the European Tour before we both were on the PGA Tour. We've played Presidents Cups, we've been partners." Cabrera will tee off for his first round at the Masters on Thursday at 10:59 a.m. with Laurie Canter and Adam Schenk. After Champions tour win, Angel Cabrera makes return to the Masters
AUGUSTA, Ga. – Angel Cabrera's return to Augusta National for the first time since 2019 was boosted by his victory Sunday on the PGA Tour Champions, but the Argentine's past was the most important topic when he spoke Tuesday with the media. This is Cabrera's first start at the Masters, which he won in 2009, since serving a 30-month prison sentence in Brazil and Argentina. The 55-year-old was found guilty of two counts of assault against his ex-girlfriend, Cecilia Torres Mana. Then in 2022, he was found guilty of assaulting another ex-girlfriend, Micaela Escudero. 'Obviously I regret things that happened and you learn from them, but at the same time those are in the past and we have to look forward, what's coming,' he said. Cabrera was also asked what he would say to those who contend he shouldn't compete in the year's first major: 'I respect their opinion and everybody has their own opinion and I respect that.' He later added, 'I won the Masters, why not [play the Masters]?' Cabrera returned to competition on the over-50 circuit last year and he won last week's James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational by two shots on the senior tour.

How NFL Hall of Famers, PGA Tour Champions joined forces for brand new event
Ronde Barber and John Daly at the 2025 James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational | Mark Haworth Photography NFL Hall of Famer Ronde Barber, who spent 16 years playing Safety for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, loves golf as much as football. He cannot get enough of the sport, which explains why he serves as the Tournament Director of the Valspar Championship. Advertisement But that event is for PGA Tour professionals only. Barber wanted to find a way for his fellow Hall of Famers to play on the big stage and showcase their personalities during retirement. After all, seemingly every retired NFL star picks up the game of golf and immediately becomes addicted to it shortly thereafter. So Barber had an idea: why not bridge together a golf tournament featuring NFL Hall of Famers and PGA Tour players? Leaning on his well-established relationships within the golfing lexicon, Barber connected Pro Links Sports with the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Pro Links Sports is an event management company that also helps facilitate the Valspar Championship. Ronde Barber helped bring everyone together for the inaugural James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational. Shortly thereafter, James Hardie, a building materials company, came to the table, and the idea of the James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame quickly became a reality. Advertisement It debuts this week on the PGA Tour Champions, with 78 of the world's best players aged 50 and over playing alongside 26 NFL legends in Boca Raton, Florida. 'It's a win-win situation for the Hall of Fame and the PGA Tour Champions too,' said former Buffalo Bill and Hall of Fame Wide Receiver Andre Reed to SB Nation. Reed, a 9-handicap, is in this week's field at the Old Course at Broken Sound. But Reed, who has an infectious personality, explained how he is just as excited to play a PGA Tour-caliber course as he is to play in the tournament itself. 'You're not gonna play a cow pasture. You're gonna play a golf course,' Reed joked. Advertisement 'You're not gonna see cows out there on the sides of the fairways. You're playing a PGA-style course. Actually, two weeks ago I played in Frisco, Texas, at the [new Ranch Fields East] course in Frisco, and that's [where the PGA Championship is in 2027]. 'I'm blessed, man.' Andre Reed swings away during the Pro-Am. Maybe his joke alludes to the rural landscapes that comprise a large part of Western New York. Maybe not. Regardless, Reed knows this tournament serves a greater purpose: supporting the community. 'I'm very involved with my own foundation and the things that I do with kids, the Boys and Girls Clubs,' Reed said. 'I know how important it is to give back to the community and for us to be involved with Habitat for Humanity, the First Tee, and Boca Raton Hospital Foundation, it means the world.' Advertisement As a part of the tournament, James Hardie will donate $100 for every birdie made by professionals, Hall of Famers, and Pro-Am participants — with a guaranteed maximum of $100,000 — to support Habitat for Humanity's mission to build safe and affordable housing for those families in need. 'All of us at James Hardie are super passionate about, and we really strive to, again, live that purpose of building a better future for all in everything we do,' explained Noor Boyle, the Senior Director of Communications and Global Brand Management for James Hardie. 'James Hardie has been a longtime partner with Habitat for Humanity for decades. Over the past year, we've built over 300 homes in climate-devastated areas, and we will continue to do so going forward. So it was natural for us to bring Habitat for Humanity in as a key beneficiary for this tournament.' James Hardie also helped construct homes in the Chicagoland area, where the company's U.S. business is based, and Canton, Ohio, which houses the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The company has built homes in the West Palm Beach community, too, where this week's tournament is being played. Advertisement 'James Hardie and the Pro Football Hall of Fame share a lot of the same values, we want to be involved in the community,' explained Jeff Shreve, who doubles as the Cleveland Browns Public Address Announcer and the Relations and Wellness Manager for the Hall of Fame. 'We want to be involved in charities, and so that's part of why so many of our guys are here from the Hall of Fame. We're talking about supporting charities, so when the guys hear that not only do they get to play in this great event, but they can help those who need it, we had no problem getting the Hall of Famers to buy in and play.' Both the Hall of Fame and the PGA Tour Champions plan on facilitating this one-of-a-kind event for years to come. The Hall of Famers will play in a 36-hole competition alongside PGA Tour Champions professionals on Friday and Saturday. The senior pros will also play on Sunday, as is customary for the PGA Tour Champions. Golf Channel will air second-round coverage of the James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational from 3:3o to 6 p.m. ET on Saturday. The network will air final round coverage on Sunday from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. ET. Masters gets first week-of WD – and it's this past champion
This week's Masters field lost a past champion on Monday morning. Vijay Singh informed the tournament's competition committees that he will not compete this week at Augusta National because of an undisclosed injury. The 62-year-old Singh, who won the 2000 Masters, was coming off his first made cut in six years last year (T-58). He tied for 18th on Sunday at the PGA Tour Champions' James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational. Singh will not be replaced in the field, which is now at 95 players.
