Construction underway on core Hendersonville intersection

HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Work has started in Hendersonville to improve traffic flow around the growing city. The TDOT-led project will eventually widen and redesign a core intersection in Hendersonville: Old Shackle Island Road and Walton Ferry Road. 'What you have right now, is you have two offsetting intersections; you pull out of one and you're immediately stopped at the other,' said Hendersonville Mayor Jamie Clary. 'You have two red lights, two traffic signals, within about 50 feet of each other.' In other words: the intersection of Old Shackle Island Road and Walton Ferry needs improvement, and has for a while. PREVIOUS | Hendersonville working on long-term transportation plan to improve traffic flow In fact, the city's initial public meeting to discuss changing the intersection was in June of 2004. 'It's going to be safer because right now… it's confusing,' said Clary. 'We get a lot of accidents right here, we get a lot of frustration, and we get a lot of back-ups.' The construction stretches several blocks down both sides of the intersection. The work has many layers, including the needed relocation of power and water lines, which is being done currently. Of course, businesses and homeowners along the road will be, or already are, impacted by the daily construction and lane closures. What's the Mayor's advice to them? 'Check out our website often, it's being updated by TDOT frequently. They're going to tell you what is coming up, what's happening right now, what the next phases are,' detailed Clary. When the intersection's transformation is finished, Clary believes it will invite more businesses and property owners to invest in that stretch of Hendersonville, given the improved flow of traffic. ⏩ Pedestrians will also get some perks when the work is completed. 'It's really not the best idea to be walking on both these roads for a good portion of it,' Clary said. 'We'll not only have added lanes and wider lanes, but we'll also have sidewalks going down the whole length of this, north and south.' This project is expected to be done by May of 2027. The next big traffic project on the docket for Hendersonville, according to Clary, will be the 'Exit 8' tunnel project, which will improve congestion leading onto Vietnam Veterans Boulevard. Hendersonville approves pay raises for entire police department

HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — After months of discussion, Hendersonville city officials approved pay raises for their entire police department Tuesday. Starting immediately, Hendersonville officers up to sergeants will get a 10% raise, lieutenants and commanders a 7.5% raise, and a 2.5% bump for both the assistant chief and chief. The idea is simple and now common for many police departments: better recruitment, more retention. After losing one of their own, Hendersonville Fire Department pushes for more cancer screenings 'Not only were we not competitive, but the crop [of candidates] was thinning,' explained Hendersonville Mayor Jamie Clary, who has been pushing this initiative for some time. 'We noticed we weren't competitive with some of the agencies that we were losing police officers to.' Hendersonville gave raises to some of their police last year. Since then, Clary said neighboring cities of their size have done the same. Going forward, a post-certified Hendersonville police officer will make just under $63,000 a year. That's more than the same officer with Gallatin police [around $53,000] and just less than Metro police [over $64,000]. 'I think I can speak for every officer in the department: it helps them with family life, it helps them because they put in a lot of hard work to protect this city,' said Houston Hackett, an officer with the Hendersonville Police Department (HPD). Tennesseans react to tariffs, possible DOGE cuts 'I feel like I fulfilled a commitment,' said the Clary. 'I think the most important objective for a city government is to protect the people that are there. And we can't do that if we have open police positions.' To that point, Clary said HPD currently has 16 open positions, with just four applicants interested. As a result, he said the city prioritized getting raises for the police department, above other city first responders. But what about the other first responders in Hendersonville? Are they also in line for pay raises? Mayor Clary said he's open to that conversation. 'I have to look at what is the capacity of the city to make these adjustments, what is the interest in our residents in increasing, possibly, property taxes,' he expressed. 'And then I have to look, so what's the benefit? ⏩ Meanwhile, some aldermen believe the discussion should be next on their list. 'There's no discussion, because it's not in [the agenda] about our fire, our public works, our administration, all the rest of our staff,' said Alderman Jeff Sasse. 'So I just wanted to publicly say, right now, my commitment to the entire staff: we're going to take a hard look at this at this next budget cycle.' Hendersonville will utilize their city sales tax to fund the police pay bump. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Will In-N-Out Burger be coming to Sumner County? Here's what we know

In-N-Out Burger, the iconic California-based burger chain known for serving up burgers and fries Animal Style, has its sights set on Sumner County. A site plan and a request to add the restaurant to a planned development are on the Hendersonville Planning agenda in March, Hendersonville Planning Director Keith Free said. He says the West Coast burger giant is looking to build at 100 Anderson Lane North in Hendersonville. "I am always excited about a new business coming to Hendersonville, particularly a business with a history of community generosity. In addition to competing for restaurant customers currently in Hendersonville, In-N-Out Burger will bring more people to Hendersonville to increase our total sales tax revenue," Hendersonville Mayor Jamie Clary said. Other city officials are excited by the possibility, Hendersonville Public Information Officer Casey LaMarr said. "We are thrilled they have chosen Hendersonville and know many residents are very excited about this possibility. I look forward to seeing their presentation to planning in March," LaMarr said. The Hendersonville Planning Commission is scheduled to meet at 6:30 p.m. on March 4 at Hendersonville City Hall. More: In-N-Out Burger's progress to open in Middle Tennessee?
