German club bosses: Winning Club World Cup would be 'historic'
Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund bosses believe that winning the title at the revamped Club World Cup would be a historic achievement for the European clubs. "In sporting terms, it's a real challenge - and you can win the first global tournament across all continents. That would be historic," Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen told the Münchner Merkur/tz media group in an interview to be published on Wednesday. Advertisement Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke added: "Every football enthusiast remembers that Uruguay won the first World Cup in 1930. It will be the same in the future with the first winner of the Club World Cup." The revamped Club World Cup will have 32 teams and will take place in 11 United States cities June 14-July 13. Bayern and Dortmund are the only two German clubs participating. Previously, it was a seven-team tournament usually played in December. Watzke said that the European clubs are looking forward to the tournament, while Dreesen stressed that it's highly attractive economically. Advertisement Football governing body FIFA is set to give more than $1 billion in prize money for the clubs, while the winner could receive a total of $125 million. "The sum is of course high, but you have to divide it into four parts," Watzke explained "After all, the Champions League takes place every year - and the Club World Cup only every four years. In addition, more competitive matches mean higher performance bonuses for players, not to mention the extremely high travel costs," he added.

Bayern Munich make statement after Liverpool prompt Florian Wirtz transfer u-turn
Bayern Munich chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen has aimed a sly dig at Liverpool with his club set to miss out on the signing of Florian Wirtz. The Reds have opened talks with Bayer Leverkusen over signing Wirtz after the attacking midfielder made clear he would be open to a move to Anfield. Bayern had considered themselves long-time favourites to sign the 22-year-old ahead of both Liverpool and Manchester City with some reports suggesting the Bundesliga side were happy to wait until next summer to make their move. That the Bavarians are now set to miss out to Liverpool has prompted question marks in Germany over their pulling power having gained a reputation for regularly plucking leading talents from their main domestic rivals. "Much more has been written than spoken," he said, speaking to Munich news outlet TZ. "FC Bayern is one of the absolute top clubs in Europe and the world. Our appeal among fans, but also among players, is enormous. "The fact that not every player will end up with us is simply part of the package; it's the same for other top clubs. But everyone knows: with FC Bayern, you can win everything every year, you're involved in every competition – the upcoming Club World Cup is a good example of that. "Just look at which clubs are represented there – and, most of all, which (clubs) aren't. The best European clubs are competing there – including FC Bayern. Our appeal, sporting ambitions, and economic power are well known to all top players around the world." Liverpool had been part of the original expanded FIFA Club World Cup in 2021 until it was scrapped due to coronavirus restrictions. Countries can only have two teams in the competition, with England represented by Chelsea and Manchester City with both having won the Champions League in the last four years. Europe has been given 12 slots in the 32-team tournament with Red Bull Salzburg - currently the 44th-placed team in UEFA's rankings - taking the final slot. Liverpool are fourth in those standings with Bayern third. Both have been European champions six times. Reports in Germany have suggested Bayern will now look to unsettle Liverpool with a bid for Cody Gakpo. Reds boss Arne Slot, though, has made clear his admiration for the Holland international as part of his long-term plans at Anfield.

Bayern chief gives Davies injury update

Fortunately, Alphonso Davies has been given the all-clear. I really hope we can pick up the thread from the [2-0] win in Leverkusen,' Dreesen said. Davies should therefore be in contention to feature against St. Pauli when Bayern's Bundesliga campaign resumes on Saturday.

Bayern boss calls for bigger clubs effort in international marketing
Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen has called for more Bundesliga clubs to travel and play abroad in the off-season to help rise international marketing income. "It is not right that two years ago only [Borussia] Dortmund and Bayern Munich from the Bundesliga were travelling far abroad during the summer break," Dreesen said on Wednesday at the SpoBis conference in Hamburg. "How do we expect the Bundesliga to be visible to the outside world beyond the screen? "As a team, we also have to be tangible in a stadium, and that includes travelling abroad, whether that's in Asia or North America or wherever." Dreesen said that more clubs should travel, and to "the markets where we believe there is potential." The Bundesliga is generating around €200 million ($207 million) fro international marketing, which is one-tenth of which the English Premier League generates. Dreesen said that while only Bayern and Dortmund travelled far two years, 13 of the 20 English top flight sides went international. "That can't be right," he said, adding that there is "a long, long road", and that "we as Bayern must find our own way to complement this with other measures for us."
