Karnataka: Basavaraj Bommai urges CM to revoke order suspending Jan Aushadhi Kendras

Haveri (Karnataka) [India] May 22 (ANI): Karnataka MP and former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Health and Family Welfare Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao to revoke the state government's order to suspend the Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Jan Aushadhi Kendras established within the premises of government hospitals in Haveri district. In a letter addressing the issue, he stated that the association of Jan Aushadhi Kendra owners from Haveri district has appealed for the revocation of the state government's order to suspend these kendras. According to the release, Bommai noted that suspending the Jan Aushadhi Kendras operating in government hospital premises would obstruct the central government's objective of providing high-quality generic medicines to the standard and economically weaker sections of society at low and affordable prices. The government must review and give appropriate instructions to the concerned authorities to take necessary action immediately. In his X post, Deputy Leader of Opposition Arvind Bellad criticised Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, alleging a deliberate sidelining of 'Jan Aushadhi Kendra' in government hospitals. Bellad claimed that 190 of 410 essential medicines are out of stock in state hospitals, with a procurement process taking at least 45 days, severely impacting North Karnataka hospitals. He accused the government of forcing poor patients to buy costly branded drugs by removing affordable generics from Jan Aushadhi Kendras. Bellad further alleged that the move is a setup for mass procurement contracts, enabling kickbacks and opaque deals, leading to substandard medicines, contaminated IV fluids, and avoidable deaths in Ballari, Hubballi, and Belagavi. He termed it a 'healthcare scam' and accused the Congress-led government of exploiting the poor for profit. Earlier, Health Minister Dinesh Gundo in his X post on Wednesday, said, 'There are 1400 Jan Aushada Kendras in Karnataka and only around 180 are in our Govt facilities. Our clear policy is that the poor people who come to our hospitals will get medicine free of cost, and there's no need for them to pay for it.' (ANI)

Mother & newborn care unit opens at RSMH

Lucknow: Ram Sagar Mishra Hospital in Bakshi Ka Talab is now first govt hospital in the city to offer integrated facility for care to ailing newborns as well as their mothers. On Saturday, Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak inaugurated a 44-bed Mother and Newborn Care Unit designed to enhance neonatal care by allowing mothers and their infants to stay together, thereby encouraging exclusive breastfeeding in a supportive medical environment. A 24x7 advanced pathology laboratory was also launched at the hospital, strengthening further diagnostic services for RSMH and eight affiliated community health centres across Lucknow. The facility will enable ailing newborns and their mothers to receive care together. Pathak congratulated the medical staff and administration for this milestone. Pathak announced the hospital's future roadmap, stating govt plans to develop RSM Hospital as a fully equipped healthcare centre. "All essential facilities will be made available here, ensuring accident victims and critical patients received complete treatment at the hospital. Director general of health was instructed to draft a proposal accordingly," Pathak said. He also inaugurated a 24x7 pathology laboratory to not only cater to RSM Hospital but will also serve as a testing hub for eight other community health centres in Lucknow, including those in Bakshi Ka Talab, Itaunja, Aliganj, Gudamba, Mall, Malihabad, Kakori and the Jankipuram trauma centre. CMS, RSM Hospital, Dr V K Sharma, shared details of the paediatric unit, comprising 44 beds, including facilities like MNCU (Mother and Newborn Care Unit), general paediatric ward and LMU (lactation management unit). The pathology lab is part of a "spoke and hub" model to streamline sample collection and testing around the clock. These facilities will enhance medical facilities around surrounding areas and blocks. To ensure affordable access to medicines, Jan Aushadhi Kendra was also inaugurated by the Deputy CM during the event.

Gujarat: Jan Aushadhi Kendra becomes a boon for Jamnagar people, offering medicines at low price

Jamnagar (Gujarat): Lakhs of families across India are reaping significant financial benefits through the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP). The Kendras under this scheme provide affordable yet high-quality medicines, bringing substantial change to the lives of the poor and middle-class populations. In Gujarat's Jamnagar, the Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Kendra located on ST Road has become especially beneficial for local residents. People from middle and low-income backgrounds have expressed deep gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the central government for the positive impact of this initiative. IANS spoke to a few beneficiaries of this scheme, who shared their experiences. Nilesh, one of the beneficiaries, shared his experience: 'I have been purchasing medicines from the Jan Aushadhi Kendra for a long time. Earlier, I used to buy them from private medical stores, where they cost around Rs 700 to 800. The same medicines now cost only Rs 200 to 250 here, saving me a lot of money. I would encourage everyone to buy their medicines from Jan Aushadhi Kendras.' Another beneficiary, Dev, said, 'I buy medicines for my parents from the Jan Aushadhi Kendra. Previously, we had to spend much more at private pharmacies, but now we are able to save a considerable amount.' Jayesh Kawaiya, director of the Jan Aushadhi Kendra in Jamnagar, said he came to know about the scheme in 2017, when he was still working for a private company. 'I left my job and decided to open a Jan Aushadhi Kendra. Initially, we had very few customers, but as awareness grew, more people started visiting, and the centre began operating successfully. The scheme has not only helped me as an entrepreneur, but it has also benefited customers through access to affordable medicines.' He added, 'I sincerely thank Prime Minister Modi for this initiative, which has become a blessing for the poor.' The PMBJP was launched in November 2008 by the Department of Pharmaceuticals under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers, in collaboration with Central Pharma Public Sector Undertakings. The aim is to make quality generic medicines available at affordable prices for all. Under this scheme, dedicated outlets -- Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras -- are established across the country. Every year, March 7 is celebrated as Jan Aushadhi Diwas to raise awareness and promote the use of generic medicines. Recently, a week-long series of events was organised from March 1 to 7 to support and aware the people about the initiative.
