Jangalmahal's pride: Jana Mandi's short film ‘Papaya' earns global praise in Germany
KHARAGPUR: A film from Jangalmahal has achieved international recognition, following its creator's 'Iron Man' success in Germany. Jana Mandi, who originates from Jangalmahal, continues to make waves internationally.
His Bengali short film 'Papaya' was featured at the prestigious Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen in Germany. The university's Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology and Music Club hosted an international short film screening on May 23, where anthropology students from different universities commended the film.
Jana Mandi, who produced 'Papaya,' hails from Paloidanga village in Jhargram's Sankrail block.
He currently serves as an Operations Manager at a private investment firm in Berlin. His strong connection to his roots motivated his involvement in the film project.
The narrative centres on Tufan, a tribal child who dreams of riding a bicycle. To meet a friend's challenge, he must locate an unfamiliar fruit called 'Papaya.' The story portrays rural simplicity, childhood inquisitiveness, and how limited access to information impacts children's development.
