Man arrested for duping engr of Rs 2 lakh
Bhubaneswar: Airfield police here on Friday arrested a man who allegedly extracted money from a govt engineer by posing as an official from the chief minister's office.
Police identified the accused as Janaki Ballav Mohapatra.
The victim, Pratap Kumar Haripal, who works as superintending engineer in Angul, recently filed a complaint stating that Mohapatra had demanded an additional Rs 5 lakh after already collecting Rs 2 lakh.
"The accused contacted Haripal several times over phone, claiming to be a CMO official. He intimidated the engineer with threats of transfer to the Maoist-affected Malkangiri district unless he is paid Rs 2 lakh," a police official said.
The complainant, without checking the authenticity of the caller, handed over Rs 2 lakh cash in Bhubaneswar. The victim discovered the deception when the suspect demanded more money.
