Out of date products are deemed unsafe to eat (Image: Cornwall Trading Standards ) On Wednesday 23 April, 2025, at Plymouth Magistrates' Court Asda Stores Ltd admitted two charges of having unsafe food on offer for sale contrary to regulation 19 of the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013. The charges referred to 62 food items that were past their use-by date. The case was heard by District Judge Jo Matson who said that although there were systems in place to prevent the sale of food after the expiry of the use by date, they were not adhered to. She added that after concerns had been raised by customers and Trading Standards officers, the actions taken by Asda were not sufficient. Asda Stores Ltd was ordered to pay a fine of £410,000, prosecutions costs of £20,582.70 and a victim surcharge of £2,000. Article continues below Use-by dates are applied to highly perishable foods that could pose a serious health risk if consumed after this date. According to Food Standards Agency guidance they should not be eaten. Jane Tomlinson, Trading Standards Group Leader at Cornwall Council, said: 'We are committed to ensuring that the food sold to consumers is safe and it is disappointing that on these occasions, we found items for sale which could have presented a danger to the public. "Consumers should be confident that the food they buy is safe to eat. We hope that the steps Asda Stores Ltd have now put in place will prevent the sale of out-of-date food in future.'

Road closures for Coventry Running Festival
A number of roads in Coventry will be closed or have restricted access to ensure the safety of participants in this year's Coventry Running festival sees the already-popular half marathon joined by the Coventry 10K on Sunday, with the half marathon kicking off at 09:00 BST and the 10k at 09: will begin in the heart of the city centre on Gosford Street and finish at the city's event requires the closure of roads and junctions as well as the suspension of a number of traffic orders between 04:00 and 15:00 on the day. Road closures will begin around the start and finish point on Priory Gate for the full duration, and until 11:00 on Gosford Street, Cox Street and B4554 Jordan closures around the route will begin from 08:00 and the final closure on Fairfax Street will be re-opened by 13:00. All roads either crossing or having a junction with the listed roads will be closed at that point. The event will also require parking suspensions from 18:00 on Saturday until 13:00 on Sunday to aid in the safe running of the event, including on Radford Road, Lawrence Saunders Road and Butcher's Lane. Road closures confirmed for charity running event
Several roads will either be closed or have restricted access when a charity running event returns to Leicester. The Leicester 10K will be held on 2 March, organised by Jane Tomlinson's Run For All, a not-for-profit events company. Starting in Jubilee Square at 09:00 GMT, runners will head through the city centre towards Victoria Park and through the University of Leicester campus before the route takes them back to the starting point. The affected roads will be closed from as early as 08:15 until 11:30 on 2 March, with parking suspensions in place from 16:00 the day before until 13:00 on the day of the event. Road closures in the area near Jubilee Square will begin at 05:00 on 2 March and run until 13:00. The event is partnered with charities including LAMP (Leicestershire Action for Mental Health Project), Leicester City in the Community and Leicester Tigers Foundation. The roads affected will include: A594 St George's Way A5894 Waterloo Way A6 London Road (only one lane closed) Belvoir Street Bishop Street De Montfort Street Granby Street Granville Road Grey Friars Horsefair Street Hotel Street Market Place Market Place South Mayors Walk New Street Peacock Lane Regent Road St Martins University Road Welford Road (only one lane closed) Listen: Thousands take part in 2024 Leicester 10k event Victoria Park Road will be completely open as runners will use the cycle path.
