Shiga governor says reactions to midge outbreak at Osaka Expo site excessive
OSAKA -- Shiga Gov. Taizo Mikazuki said reactions over a plague of non-biting midges at the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai venue might be overblown. Referring to the outbreak of the insects, Mikazuki said during a May 27 regular press conference, "This is the time of year they appear. As someone from a prefecture where we live with Biwako mushi (a type of chironomid around Lake Biwa), I'm not sure what good it will do making too big a deal out of it. I'm sure the midges want to see the Expo too." His remarks highlight a difference in views with Osaka Gov. Hirofumi Yoshimura, who is advancing measures against the insect outbreak, as something "that cannot be ignored." According to the Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition, large numbers of the insects have appeared near the Water Plaza on the southern side of the venue in Osaka's Konohana Ward, where water shows and other events are held. Yoshimura stated at a press conference that he wants to "take every possible measure," and has asked insecticide manufacturers for assistance with extermination. On the other hand, Mikazuki took a more reserved stance, saying, "There are also people in Shiga Prefecture who are troubled by Biwako mushi, but I would like to wait and see how effective outdoor extermination is." He also added, "Midges are living creatures too. I hope we can all think about how to coexist with them while also considering their lives." The official website of the Shiga Prefectural Government provides information on how to deal with Biwako mushi. The concluding message notes, "No matter how many there are, they disappear after the season ends. Please consider them a seasonal tradition of Lake Biwa and look on them with kindness." Osaka expo to open gates minutes earlier to deal with crowding
OSAKA (Kyodo) -- The opening time of the World Exposition in Osaka will be moved up by five to 10 minutes from the current 9 a.m. starting Sunday to ease overcrowding at the gates, a source close to the matter said. The Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition said Friday it will also introduce same-day reservations for "park and ride" slots starting Saturday and lower some fees for the system, which requires visitors to park at designated areas and take shuttle buses to the venue, in a bid to boost its popularity. The schedule change comes after some visitors were unable to reach the pavilions in time for their reservations, the source said, adding that the association will determine the exact opening time based on crowd levels. Osaka Gov. Hirofumi Yoshimura, who has been calling for opening the gates earlier, said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, "We should continue exploring more (options). This marks the first step." Under the current park-and-ride system, visitors must reserve slots by the day before their arrival, with fees for parking cars at a nearest area ranging from 4,500 yen ($31) to 7,500 yen. After the changes, visitors will be able to reserve slots on the day of their visit, with prices ranging from 6,500 yen to 7,500 yen. A new discount will also be introduced, with parking after 3 p.m. costing between 3,000 and 3,500 yen. Although organizers have prepared parking areas with capacity for over 10,000 vehicles, weekday occupancy rates remain low. Yoshimura had earlier proposed that the association halve the parking fee for vehicles carrying more than four expo visitors.

Osaka Expo to offer visitors cool rest area in electric bus from June
The organizer of the 2025 Osaka Expo said Monday that it will make an electric bus available at the expo site for visitors to rest in from early June. The Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition hopes visitors will use the bus to avoid heatstroke in the summer heat. The vehicle will be the same model as Isuzu Motors' bus used in a shuttle service between the expo site and JR Sakurajima Station. With a capacity of 67 passengers and a fully flat floor, the electric bus will maintain an internal temperature of 25 degrees Celsius by running air conditioners powered by batteries charged at night.
