An Ice Cream Shop With Enthralling Flavor Combinations — and More Philly Restaurant Openings
Here's a handful of recent new openings around Philadelphia in May 2025, from a sibling to Mexican Tequilas to a globally-inspired ice cream spot. Corio has opened from chef David Feola, manager James Smith; and Ryan Mulholland, who is currently CookNSolo's director of operations, the Inquirer reports. It's offering pizza, sandwiches, and salads during the day. 3675 Market Street Sushi bar Javelin opened on Thursday, May 1 for lunch with bento boxes and roll specials, along with dinner that includes sushi, sashimi, and Japanese-leaning entrees. A full bar is available. 1811 Fairmount Avenue La Jefa has opened, the sister space to the reopened Tequilas, that serves coffee with beans from Mexico and food that centers around lonches, which are served on long, sourdough rolls known as birotes. Dinner will be introduced soon. 1605 Latimer Street The sibling location to the one in D.C. that opened in 2023, Little Gay Pub has opened. Owners Dito Sevilla, Dusty Martinez, and Benjamin Gander told the Inquirer that they intend for it to be a place that celebrates the LGBTQ community. 102 South 13th Street Percy has opened from BIKCG Hospitality Group with chef Jack Smith at the helm, the Inquirer reports. The group owns the three Forîn Cafes. Percy will offer daily morning coffee and pastries as well as daily brunch, and dinner from Thursday through Saturday. Look for items like a croque-monsieur with roast pork, broccoli rabe, provolone, and an egg. 170 N. Front Street The Philly location of globally inspired ice cream shop Malai has opened with flavors like cherry black cardamom, date tamarind, and turmeric. 260 South 18th Street Umi Hotpot Sushi and Seafood Buffet has opened a Philly branch, according to Yelp and its website. The chain has locations in Flushing, Queens, along with several in New Jersey, Texas, and elsewhere. 3000 Island Avenue Starting with breakfast and brunch, Val's has opened serving chicken and waffles, avocado toast, and cheeseburgers. 2047 Green Street Sign up for our newsletter.

Melbourne now has a Japanese convenience store like those in Tokyo
Previous SlideNext Slide Japanese$$$$ Japan's 7-Elevens and Lawsons are legendary for their high-quality snacks and cleanliness. Suupaa channels that spirit with polished stainless steel, grab-and-go items like onigiri and donburi (rice bowls), and coffee on tap. But you can also sit down (or even come for dinner on select nights) for udon noodles, hefty sandos and signature drinks, boozy or otherwise. The bento style leans towards ekiben, the colourful boxed meals sold on trains and at train stations in Japan. Onigiri isn't wholly bound by tradition, however; there are riffs on popular Spam versions made by subbing in mortadella and a layer of fluffy egg. That playfulness extends to the dine-in menu, reserved for items that don't travel as well. The panko-crumbed pork-loin tonkatsu comes with a Vegemite-spiked Bulldog sauce, and a Japanese-leaning udon bolognese is made with a dashi stock base and a rich katsuobushi and parmesan cream.
