Newport News man, 21, dies in city jail
An investigation is underway after an inmate died by suicide Tuesday inside Newport News City Jail, the Sheriff's Office said in a news release.
A deputy was making rounds and found 21-year-old Jaqaris Andrew Jemison, of Newport News, unresponsive and immediately called for help, according to the release.
A team of deputies and medical staff performed CPR and life-saving measures until paramedics arrived, according to the Sheriff's Office. Jemison was taken to a local hospital where he died.
He had been in custody since April on charges including assault and battery, assault on law enforcement and drug possession, according to the release. He was scheduled to appear in court in August.
His death is being investigated by the Newport News Sheriff's Office and the Newport News Police Department, as is standard procedure.
The medical examiner will determine the cause of death, though the sheriff's office notes no foul play is suspected.
