Lafayette man accuses Lafayette Police Department of excessive force
LAFAYETTE, La. () — A Lafayette man is claiming police used excessive force the night he was celebrating his birthday. As a result, his hip was broken. News 10 speaks exclusively with Jaquan Green and his mother about the incident and his road to recovery. 20-year-old Jaquan Green says he and his friends were in Downtown, Lafayette celebrating his birthday the night before Mother's Day when officers with the started walking behind them. He says after a few moments, one of the officers began yelling at them and used excessive force by throwing him on the ground. Shortly after, Jaquan says he was detained for a few minutes without being told why. He says once he was released, he was left on the ground in excruciating pain. 'They didn't call no ambulance, they cuffed me, they let me out of the cuffs, and sent me about my day,' said Green. 'Aint ask me about my name, never read me my rights, nothing.' Green says police went from walking behind him and his friends to slamming him on the ground and handcuffing him all in a matter of minutes. He says he was never told why he was detained, nor did his actions warrant the response he got, but after police uncuffed him, he immediately felt something was wrong and needed his friend's help to limp to the car. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now 'After I got out of the car, I couldn't even lay down. Like I knew something was broke so I went to the hospital,' he explained. Jaquan said when he got home, he was in so much pain he told his mom he needed to go to the hospital right away. Rilette Scott, Jaquan's mother, says doctors told her he would need surgery because his left hip was broken. 'They did a CT scan because he couldn't do x-ray since he couldn't walk,' Scott said. 'That's when they found out his hip was broken.' Scott says since the incident, she's had to witness Jaquan deal with constant pain. 'He's suffering every day and every single day,' she said. Scott says she's furious her son was injured and contacted an attorney to seek help. Jaquan's attorney, James Word, says from the moment he was contacted and told about the incident, his goal has been to get justice for Jaquan. 'This type of police conduct cannot be ignored. All responsible parties need to be investigated,' said Word. Jaquan says he never thought this would happen to him until it did. He says it's been hard not being able to move around like he used to, but now his focus is on healing. 'I'm used to moving around. I can't move around at all. I try to motivate myself to get back right, so I can start being moved around again,' Green said. News 10 contacted LPD about the alleged incident and we were told in a statement: 'They noted that no complaint has been filed as of today's date. No statement will be made as a result of a possible complaint being filed in the near future.' As this story develops, we'll have updates here on News 10. Beaufort man arrested in connection with highway car crash
BEAUFORT, N.C. (WNCT) — Law enforcement officers with the Beaufort Police Department arrested a man on Wednesday in connection with a hit and run. Officers received reports about a car crash that took place at the intersection of Highway 101 and 70. Upon arrival, officers found two cars in the ditch with people trapped inside both. One car was on fire. All four victims were removed from their cars and the fire was extinguished. Three victims were taken to Carteret General with serious injuries and the fourth was airlifted to Vidant Medical Center. The driver of the car that caused the accident by failing to stop at the red light fled on foot before officers arrived. An open container of alcohol was found in the car. Jaquan Timothy Jackson, 28 years old, was identified as the suspect. Three of the victims were in his car, two trapped inside and one on the ground next to it. Jackson was arrested Wednesday and charged with hit and run serious injury/death, unsealed wine/liquor in the passenger area and fail to stop at a red light. More charges may be applied.
